Is San Francisco Really "Cougar Country"?

cougar1.jpg
A brand new local blog, Marina Cougar thinks so anyway. It used to be the word cougar referred only to the puma (or mountain lion - this one species of cat has many names).

These days, its primary meaning has shifted - it appears that more often people use the term to refer to an age disparity in dating. Where do cougars hang out in S.F.? See you after the jump.

Per the website, these locations have all had sightings:

5) Matrix Fillmore
4) Americano.
3) Circa
2) Sam's in Tiburon
1) Balboa Cafe

The area in North Beach near Grant and Green is specifically pointed out. That's where the lovely and popular Beth Spotswood had her infamous cougar incident. But look at the photo - these two appear to be about the same age, so this must have been a joking reference.

Some purported cougars don't seem to mind the term, and others have embraced it.

Cougars seem to be fun, fearless, females out having a good time - what's wrong with that?

i hope this isn't just a cheap ripoff of the original http://www.urbancougar.com/

they really started this thing a few years ago

Only "sightings"? I would say those five places listed have Cougars' names permanently engraved into the plush booths and trendy barstools.

#1 You might be close to being correct, but the new site has an SF-only focus and it's up to date. UC appears to have not too much going on these days.

Grant and Green is a specific bar at, you guessed it, the corner of Grant and Green.

>>these two appear to be about the same age

These days, I think men dating women of roughly the same age is so out of vogue that it's practically considered dating someone older.

Just ask Brittanie Mountz!

"Cougar" is more flattering than what we call old men who date younger women "creepy old perverts," so it's not too insulting. OK, it's a little insulting.

well the guys that started urban couger are from the marina so i bet they'll be pissed

the site is legendary

it teaches a couger in training how to prey on young and broke men, spotting them with pbr's in hand

it ranks all the different types of cougars on the prowl, from the toyota to the rolls royce, my favorite

Yeah, I've spotted some cougars at Gino & Carlo, the Savoy-Tivoli , Enrico's.

Down in the South Bay last weekend, I realized I was wrong when I thought that Los Gatos was named for Mountain Lions. In fact I think Las Hoochies was later renamed to Saratoga.

Um, the male cougars that I know are all called "successes" -- not perverts, actually.
