A Hero Ain't Nothin' But A Ross Mirkarimi Sandwich
WE LOVE IT WHEN ROSS MIRKARIMI SAVES THE DAY!!!!!! Remember when he stopped a robbery? And then when he saved the life of a guy in Buena Vista Park? And today, he caught two people involved in a drive-by shooting!!! (Thanks to commenter Rah for calling our attention to the story!)
Ross Mirkarimi, the supervisor for the Western Addition/Lower Haight's District 5, was out for a jog this morning around 9:45 a.m. (guess Ross doesn't get into the office early) when he heard gunshots near Fulton and Steiner. (possibly the shots heard by one of our readers?) He called the cops, who then swung by and picked him up in the cruiser to help him find the suspect. Thanks to Ross's good work, two suspects were (gasp!) arrested later in the day.
Ross, we hope you're also reading SFist these days, because that would be too awesome if two SFist readers in District 5 helped solve two different crimes in two days!!! Sorry if we're embarrassing you by bringing up all your other lifesaving acts, though. (The papers have always said that Ross doesn't like to brag about his heroism to the press. SO ADORABLE.)
After the jump: the text of the message the SFPD sent out about Ross's involvement in the arrest. LOVE!!!!!

Friends: There seems to be many wild rumors about what happened today. This morning a little before 10am two suspects in a car shot at two people going west on Grove towards Steiner (Alamo Square). The people ran down Steiner to Fulton and then on Fulton toward Fillmore. The suspects crashed their car and then fled on foot. One victim was shot and taken to the hospital. The other person fled. Many people came forward to tell us what happened including that the suspects had been after the man who was shot for some time.
Supervisor Mirkarimi was walking (not wearing suit and tie) on Grove, heard the shots and ran toward the scene. When a suspect was detained a call went out for back-up. An officer had the supervisor get in the patrol car and drove quickly to help out. The Supervisor was able to identfy the suspect as fleeing the scene. The suspect was later positively identified as being involved by other witnesses. Two suspects are currently in custody and our victim does not appear to have life threatening injuries. It is early in the investigation but I do not believe that the residents of the Park District need to worry about retaliation.
Thank you to all who came forward to help in this investigation. A tip of the hat to Supervisor Mirkarimi who ran towards a scene where shots were being fired.

Way to go Ross, actions speak louder than words and you have proven that you are one man who truly cares about people and about this city. Lesson to learn gavin, stay clean and sober and off gettys carpet and you too can aspire to do a good deed (good deeds do not include having sex with your drunk/high secretary or walking swells through the projects)
Mirkirimi has proved himself time and time again during times of chaos and crisis. Gavin Getty-Newsom is really good for tourism and attracting glamour and money, but if SF ever faced difficulties I have the feeling he'd be on the Getty 727 faster than you could say "I left my heart in San Francisco".....
Good Job Sup....Now maybe youll see that you need cops in cars that can patrol and get to places quickly. There are TOO many police assigned to footbeats. They are needed but you cant shortchange the districts with too many mandatory beats. You also shouldnt be telling cops to sit on one corner 24/7. thats a waste the shootings will just move around the corner.
Okay, first time? Whatever -- chance encounter. (I saved a poodle once.)
Twice? Coincidence, maybe.
But 3, and now four times??? C'mon, give it up. The man is literally a crime-fighting hero. You don't have to vote for him, but you definitely have to stow the snark.
Supe-5 got skillz, yo.
Yeah for people getting involved and witnesses coming forward! Don't live in fear - Don't tolerate violence.
I'm sure he's a delightful man, but there have been almost 50 homicides in the Western Addition since 2005. Just sayin'....
Rough and ready Ross.
What a stud.
Who brings a cell phone with them when they're jogging? Or did he find a pay phone somewhere?
Why isn't this guy mayor?
He was first in his class at the police academy. He is a good guy and he's willing to get involved. He's not like too many politicos in this town who talk all big and stuff and are wimps.
And he's not on some freakin' playa acting like an idiot and taking drugs. WHY OH WHY can't this guy be mayor instead of Mayor Drinkypoo.
"Who brings a cell phone with them when they're jogging?"
Um, women? I mean, I make sure to bring a cell when I'm on a run because I feel fucking vulnerable no matter where I go.
"Why isn't this guy mayor?"
Seriously.
As much as I support my supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, I should point out that the first crime mentioned here, "the robbery," actually qualifies more as a "burglary" legally. Robbery involves personal contact (i.e. "stick 'em up."). This was a guy lifting a backpack from a car.
That said, I'm proud Ross Mirkarimi is my supe, and not just because he keeps saving lives and busting up crimes.
L.L.
I would say something incredibly fangirlish (perhaps a "ohmyGAWDi'mgonnagoTOUCHMYSELFNOW") but Rita, you really nailed this one (no pun intended?). I don't think anything I could say would compare to the pure orgasmic enthusiasm expressed in this post.
But on the, you know, serious note of this post... job well done? I dunno, apparently he does this all the time so I don't think he needs my recognition.
Let's be real here. One of the reasons there IS so much crime is Mirkarimi's constant support for pot clubs and disinterest in cleaning up streets or going after low-level crime. He votes with Daly and Ammiano on nearly EVERY crime measure (except cameras), and has supported Muhammed X or whatever terrorists run Bayview now.
He didn't run for mayor because he's a coward, and if he runs in 2011 he'll get his ass handed to him by someone like Herrera, who works for gang injunctions. Mirky was against those, I believe.
All flash and little substance. Just like Newsom. Some race that would have been.
well guest 14. if we're really talking about cowards here maybe you'd register and at least give us a name.
For what it's worth Ross is my sup, married some of my best friends (it was the first wedding he conducted as a public official, how cool is that?) and, I wrote him awhile ago telling him I wish he would run for mayor. He wrote me back a thoughtful response laying out all the reasons why he's not--it's already too late in the game, it would take attention away from his district, to name just a few. I'm sure he's gotten more than a few letters like mine because he had the answers down pat and I'm sure it was a form letter of some sort (with some personal touches, I'd like to think). I think if enough of us keep bugging him we'll get rid of do-little Newsom and eventually get Ross to run. Next time? I mean, here's a guy people are *asking* to be mayor. How cool is that?
14, with your logic Herrera should run for mayor himself this year, or he's a coward too.
Anyone actually running that you do like?
I'm curious. Did Ross Mirkirimi pass Gavvie-Baby running the other way?
Half of his district's huge non-voting bloc wants to know: fixie or non-fixie?
The other half wants to know when he goes running so they can plan their gangland assassinations around it.
