A Hero Ain't Nothin' But A Ross Mirkarimi Sandwich

rossmirkhero.jpgWE LOVE IT WHEN ROSS MIRKARIMI SAVES THE DAY!!!!!! Remember when he stopped a robbery? And then when he saved the life of a guy in Buena Vista Park? And today, he caught two people involved in a drive-by shooting!!! (Thanks to commenter Rah for calling our attention to the story!)

Ross Mirkarimi, the supervisor for the Western Addition/Lower Haight's District 5, was out for a jog this morning around 9:45 a.m. (guess Ross doesn't get into the office early) when he heard gunshots near Fulton and Steiner. (possibly the shots heard by one of our readers?) He called the cops, who then swung by and picked him up in the cruiser to help him find the suspect. Thanks to Ross's good work, two suspects were (gasp!) arrested later in the day.

Ross, we hope you're also reading SFist these days, because that would be too awesome if two SFist readers in District 5 helped solve two different crimes in two days!!! Sorry if we're embarrassing you by bringing up all your other lifesaving acts, though. (The papers have always said that Ross doesn't like to brag about his heroism to the press. SO ADORABLE.)

After the jump: the text of the message the SFPD sent out about Ross's involvement in the arrest. LOVE!!!!!

Friends: There seems to be many wild rumors about what happened today.

This morning a little before 10am two suspects in a car shot at two people going west on Grove towards Steiner (Alamo Square). The people ran down Steiner to Fulton and then on Fulton toward Fillmore. The suspects crashed their car and then fled on foot. One victim was shot and taken to the hospital. The other person fled. Many people came forward to tell us what happened including that the suspects had been after the man who was shot for some time.

Supervisor Mirkarimi was walking (not wearing suit and tie) on Grove, heard the shots and ran toward the scene. When a suspect was detained a call went out for back-up. An officer had the supervisor get in the patrol car and drove quickly to help out. The Supervisor was able to identfy the suspect as fleeing the scene. The suspect was later positively identified as being involved by other witnesses. Two suspects are currently in custody and our victim does not appear to have life threatening injuries. It is early in the investigation but I do not believe that the residents of the Park District need to worry about retaliation.

Thank you to all who came forward to help in this investigation. A tip of the hat to Supervisor Mirkarimi who ran towards a scene where shots were being fired.
