MediaBistro Takes Its Turn With Phil Bronstein; SFist Community Guest-Stars

Today, we really enjoyed an interview of Chronicle Executive Editor Phil Bronstein by Julie Haire, an L.A.-based freelance writer, that was published on MediaBistro.

And, yes, we confess, part of that enjoyment was due to multiple references to SFist -- these pieces in particular, we think (though we wish MB had provided direct links). Actually, the fact that our community was referenced ("And that was another thing in the SFist.com article. A lot of people felt you weren't doing enough local coverage") really impressed us -- it's very cool that people in the media are taking serious note of blog discussions. About that interview with us, Bronstein told Haire:

"You enter the blog world today, especially as an editor and probably particularly me because I have a slightly more unusual history than some, and you're just asking for it. And I knew that."

We knew it too, and we respect him for it. Whatever folks may think about how he runs the paper, the man certainly is not afraid to put himself out there and face the public and his critics.

In any case, click over to read Phil's thoughts on you guys, on Bruce Bruggman, on the Chron's recent staff reductions, the importance of staff diversity, and some of Phil's history as a war correspondent.

When Bronstein says he wants to be more activist we assume he means more activist in representing the interests of the Pacific heights crowd.

He is like their guard dog.

I take it from that puff piece that someone from MediaBistro is in line for a job at the Chronicle???

Am I being greedy for wanting just one or two tiny details of what living with Sharon was like? Isn't that what we all really want to know?

Bronsteins photo looks strangely like Charles Manson, why is that?

Phil Bronstein was named editor of the San Francisco Examiner in 1993 and presided over the paper's slow decline in both quality and readership. He blamed the joint operating agreement and the fact the Ex was an afternoon paper.

Phil Bronstein was named editor of the San Francisco Chronicle in 2000 and has presided over the paper's slow decline in both quality and readership. He has blamed Craigslist, the collapse of the tech bubble, the rise of the Internet as a source for news and, most recently, the popularity of blogs.

Phil Bronstein is too narcissistic, too arrogant or too stupid -- or perhaps all three -- to realize that he is a BIG part of the problem. He is an ineffective, incompetent leader who does not have the respect of his staff or the community he purports to serve. It is a fact that he is known more for marrying Sharon Stone and being attacked by a lizard than for any journalistic contributions he has made during a career that can only with the utmost generosity be called average at best.

Now, almost 100 people have been forced out of their jobs in no small part because of Phil Bronstein's incompetence.

If Phil Bronstein had any integrity whatsoever, he would resign in solidarity with, and out of respect for, the people whose careers he has helped ruin. His staff has served him with far more dedication, talent and professionalism than he has ever shown.

It is time for him to go.
