Once a month we're going to start giving you a crafty idea for what to do with the previous month's fast pass. We're calling it '"Muni Makeover," but we're totally open to a title change, so let us know if you have any suggestions. Also, we know lots of people who have done clever things with old BART tickets, fast passes, and bus transfers. If you're one of them, send pictures of your projects to sfist.crafts@gmail.com and we'll post them here. And if you make something we post about here, we'd love to see a picture of your final project, so send it along!
While we didn't really think the beige and brown colors suited the first month of summer, we recognize that June can still feel like fall around here, and we kind of liked the '70's color scheme going on with last month's fast pass. In keeping with the '70s motif, we made long earrings with wood, tigers eye, and pearl beads hanging from some brass chain.
These are simple earrings, but if you don't have any of the supplies lying around, here's an old Craftwork post that lists places to buy jewelry-making supplies in the city. And if you need some basic jewelry making techniques, you can read up on those here.
What you'll need:
2007 June Fast Pass
2 Earring Hooks
4 Head Pins
Brass Chain
6 Beads
2 Jump Rings
Flat Nose Pliers
Round Nose Pliers
Wire Cutters
The first step in this fast pass makeover is laminating the paper. (You can use a thick packaging tape to do this.) Neatly cover both sides of the fast pass with tape and cut the excess tape off once your done. You can now cut the fast pass into any shape. We made rectangles that showed off each of June's colors. You can make hearts, triangles, or circles here, whatever strikes your fancy. Once you have your shape cut, take a safety pin and pierce the top of your shape about a centimeter from the edge. Take a jump ring and put it through the hole. We wanted this piece to dangle a little, so we added a small piece of chain to the jump ring. Once the chain is added this piece will hang right off the earring hook. We chose two different types of brass chain to compliment the browns in the fast pass, using the headpins we attached our beads to the bottom of each piece of chain. You can add more than two pieces of chain here for a fuller look. When we had our three separate pieces we latched them all onto the earring hook and closed it up with a pair of flat nose pliers. Now you can wear your June Fast Pass all year long!

FANTASTIC! They're so cool looking! And what a great feeling to be able to recycle just one more thing in our daily lives. Clever.

OMG! I love these so much and I look forward to whatever projects are in the months ahead.
No need for a pix of this project. I saw someone do this down at city hall.
You take the pass and roll it into a sturdy straw. Do your blow, then let the pass return to it's original shape. Be sure to use the holographic mirror strip to check your nose for any lingering snow b4 returning to your desk.
Remove all lingering crumbs from the pass so they do NOT jam up the Metro turnstiles.
I'll start saving mine in case you ever need extras!
This is genius. Also, I've always wanted a lampshade made of old MUNI passes.
