Jesse Jackson to Save us all

jesse.png
As reported by local crime blog SF Metblogs, we've been seeing an awful lot of violent crime lately. And, as their first commenter points out, it's the brown people who are to blame. Well, enough is enough -- we can't go on. We can't go on no more. No.

Only press conferences, snappy slogans, and celebrity do-gooding can save us now! From a recent press release:

Rev. Jackson and the Rainbow PUSH Coalition plans to attend a call for peace at Sunday, July 8 Ella Hill Hutch Community Center Rally, 1050 McAllister St. in San Francisco at 2 p.m.

At last! A "call for peace!" Why didn't we think of that? But instead of fighting crime with the most effective tools available (press conferences), the city's been wasting time deploying so-called "police officers" and conducting "community outreach" and issuing "injunctions" and "arresting gang members" and "securing convictions" -- whatever THAT means!

From the sound of today's Chronicle article about how the City has racked up a $4.9 billion bill for promised retiree healthcare benefits, there won't be enough money in the budget in future years to pay for a police force.

Sadly, a 20-something guy was shot in front of the Ferry Building last night after the fireworks show ended. Read more: http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_6304670

sometimes i weary of sfist blogger sarcasm. the whole disaffected urban wit thing gets old.

I don't believe Rev Jackson is using up any significant city resources by speaking in the community. I also don't see how this counters police efforts in any way.

it's not disaffected urban anything - it's Republicanism, pure and simple. why bother actually doing anything about anything? ignore it and let people who actually care about stuff change it.

i do wonder if having a black person on staff at sfist would allow it to cover important issues a little more seriously. i mean, i'm all for music concert info, but at some point we all have to grow up a bit, si?

2 more dead in the Mission by way of gunshot (happened yesterday, 4th of July)

also, 2 people were stabbed in a North Beach brawl that involved 35 people, and a drummer had her hand injured at Dolores park, when someone threw fireworks at her.

How is this a bad thing?

It's unfortunate to think that more police -- a new "war on crime" if you will -- and the subsequent imprisonment of individuals (disproportionately non-white, of course) is somehow better than community involvement and solidarity with those most affected by America's way of dealing with its problems.

So what exactly is the community supposed to do as intervention?

"Oh hi mr. crackhead gang member. Won't you please put that gun away? Thanks and have a nice day!"

I'll bet #7 a million dollars he won't hang out in the hood for a night? I don't care if these monsters kill each other. Darwin award. But they're coming into our hoods call the army. Let us gentrify the city to force these people out since they can't behave in a civilized society. And Jesse Jackson is a liar/chear/criminal/extortionist/racist. He set his own cause back 50 years. Jails are disproportionally nonwhite because they commit crimes disproportionaly. Do the math.

Yogo, YOU are a monster. please leave san francisco. there's no room for your hate here. leave now.

yogo raises a great point in [9] first sentence.

I like Jesse, but I'll also bet he stays at some really nice hotel or house. I know some great spots on 6th near Mission he could try. Or he could try some of the crack dens in the TL.

Any suggestions with names/addresses?

Yogo, you're one to talk about how to behave in a "civilized society."

Oh I don't think so. Me and my trusy sidearm are here and staying and we will fend off the barbarians at the gate. #10 if you are the same anon loser you aint spending that time either in the hood. Stay in Pac Heights where you belong and all the other bleeding hearts have their gates and security systems and private constable. Who hates here my little friend?? This is how the rich white libs help force out the middle class and protect their values. These are the gents who will house Mr. Jackson.

Maybe I'll just use Josh Wolf as a club and swing him around at the bad guys. About the same size and intellect as a 2x4.

#4 peter, here here!

Yogo, you lookin' at me? YOU LOOKIN' AT ME?? Well ya must be cause there ain't no one else here?

(dude yer turning into Robert de Niro in Taxi Driver, and we're worried for ya)

i just got confirmation from the sfpd that we only have 2300 police officers in the city. that is a joke. we should have 3400 to equal what our peer metropolitan cities have in a per capita range. nyc has 1/229 for example.

i do wonder if having a black person on staff at sfist would allow it to cover important issues a little more seriously. i mean, i'm all for music concert info, but at some point we all have to grow up a bit, si?

This has to be the most ridiculous psuedo-point that gets made on the -ist sites. Somehow the opinions here aren't legitimate because the writers aren't black, and being black somehow gives you street cred.

Doesn't that entire line of reasoning belie a deeper racism on the part of the commenter, further objectifying those very people?

It is a relief to read Kevin's comment.

I would like to be able to say that among SFist's excellent writers are people of widely complimentary backgrounds (by which I mean, it would be nice to have some black writers). But that simply hasn't happened yet. Given the two choices, I would rather say "we have no black writers at the moment" instead of "we have writers who were only hired because they are black."

Also: I can't believe how many people are willing to pretend that SF's violent criminals will suddenly join hands and sing about peace simply because Jesse Jackson asked them to.

MattyMatt 18 "I can't believe how many people are willing to pretend that SF's violent criminals will suddenly join hands and sing about peace simply because Jesse Jackson asked them to."

You are 1000% right. Those folks need to increase their dose or buy a clean pipe.
