Carole Migden's Health Revelations

migdenobamaboxer.jpgAfter poking some good-natured fun at State Senator Carole Migden for her driving mishaps last week, we now feel obliged to tell you guys that she's revealed that she was diagnosed with leukemia 10 years ago and thinks that her medication might have affected her driving that day.

Migden says she was diagnosed in 1997, was unable to find a bone marrow match, but successfully fought off the disease nonetheless, saying she lost her hair but not her will to live. She was proclaimed disease-free in February of this year by her doctors, but is still on chemotherapy drugs.

Migden also says she's going to get neurological testing to make sure everything is okay because she doesn't remember anything about what happened involving the accident last Friday.

Congratulations to Carole Migden for fighting off leukemia and we wish her good health moving forward.

Now. Will she be charged with driving under the influence of (chemotherapy) drugs? It could happen, you know. I've seen it a lot in my practice.

Wanna bet?

Her neurological scan will come up negative for neuros.

h.

I definitely think that any DUI type charges should be investigated. As to the bigger picture, it seems pretty amazing that she has fought the disease and thrived in SF politics for so many years. One tough bird!

Any guesses as to whether she's a medical pot user too?

First off, if she's truly ill, I hope she recovers.

However, Migden says it's not an excuse for her behavior, but an explanation. I'm sticking with the simpler explanation: Migden's a power-drunk career politician who doesn't think she answers for her actions to anyone. It's interesting that her explanation (not an excuse, mind you) comes only after the story starts getting traction in the Chron and the SacBee. She could have shared her idea with the CHP on the scene. This reeks of "Oh my God, who'd have thought the little people would take this seriously, I'd better come up with a story."

Migden needs to go. If she's blacking out while driving at 80 mph and crashing into median barriers, then God only knows what she's doing while trying to represent her constituents on the floor of the senate.

h your even a bigger scumbag than i thought. you frighten no one, go slink under a rock and drink yourself to death you peddie racist.

Thank you Rita for being a stand up kind of person and taking the high road.

In response to Sally, I suggest you get out of the fog and see what Carole has actually done for her constituents while in the legislature. To quote another poster at another site: "Carole Migden becomes one of the most effective legislators in Sacramento, saves the Headwaters, establishes and expands statewide Domestic Partnership rights, does Community Choice Aggregation, tweaks Willie Brown, and brings home the bacon for SF and Marin, ALL THE WHILE FIGHTING LEUKEMIA."

C'mon now, people.

SFist/Gothamist comments policy, blah blah blah. You've heard it before. Please keep on-topic in these threads. This is not a place for personal attacks.

Michael - you must one of Migden's staffers. One that she hasn't thrown anything at yet.

First, she's brought "home the bacon for SF and Marin"? Not really for Marin, but let's go with your argument for a sec. Migden's consistenly voted for fiscally irresponsible spending at the state level under the guise of "bringing home the bacon". Great - meanwhile, during her terms in the assembly and senate, California's credit rating has pretty much gone into the crapper. She's been pretty great at spending other people's money.

Second, her behavior has been increasingly erratic over the years - this is only the latest in a series of "She did what???" episodes. SF, Marin and Sonoma would be better served by less erratic representation.

Seriously? The best she can do after 60 miles of road rage that ended in an injury crash is say she remembers nothing and that the cancer drugs made her do it?

I've known more than a couple of cancer patients, and none of them ever would have used their illness to mitigate being a butthole on the road.

She's a career politician who'll never, ever take responsibility for her behavior. I hope she has lots of time to stay home and rest after the next election.

Actually, she should resign now.

"her behavior has been increasingly erratic over the years" .. hmm, well, fighting leukemia may have a way of doing that. But, it didn't stop her from running the appropriations committee in the Assembly for 4 years and it didn't stop her from chairing the same committee for two years in the Senate.

Even politicians are people. Attack their record. Attack their ethics. But leave their medical conditions (and the behavior it may provoke) out of the discussion. If we are to take her at her word and assume that she didn't actually remember anything from the incident. it's entirely fair to assume that she wasn't lucid enough to explain that to the police who met her at the scene.

Jer,

Sorry. When anonymous posters cross the line, I out them. I'll ignore [DELETED] of the Mayor's Press Office from now on.

[EDITED PER GOTHAMIST COMMENT POLICY]

I find it interesting that she authored SB177, requiring Ignition Interlock Devices for those convicted of DUI, even a first DUI. An IID would not have prevented her from driving, or anyone using/abusing Rx drugs or illicit drugs.
It seems she also backed legislation against cell phone use while driving.
I look forward to seeing if she walks her talk.

I would love to see these nay sayers be able to conduct their lives in such a manner with such a disease hanging over their head! Unless you've walked in the shoes - you don't know!!!! Good for her!!!

Now - give me a good excuse why Leno is against puppies and kittens and taxpayers!!!!
