Interview: Paco Romane

paco.jpg
At long last! An interview with someone who will ‘fess up to using craigslist for casual encounters and sex. True, Paco Romane is a comedian by trade, but who would lie about a thing like that? Unless it’s in the interest of comedy. Hmm. All in all, we’re inclined to trust Paco, he has good taste in comedians (Robin Williams!) and he has adapted well to this burrito loving city. Then again, how can anyone from Michigan actually be cold here?!

Catch Paco's show at the Makeout Room the last Wed. of the month.

Name
Paco Romane

Introduce yourself in one sentence
Hello, I am a comedian, writer, actor, multi-instrumentalist, DJ, piano teacher, dog owning, movie fanatic, media loving, son-of-a-bitch.

Age and Occupation
35 Comedian/Actor

Home Town
Coldwater, Michigan

How long have you lived in the Bay Area
I have lived in the Bay Area for 8 years. I live in the Upper Haight. I was drawn to SF because my comedy idol Robin Williams lives here and I heard that he got his start here and that the bay area was a fertile, stomping ground for artists. I got my place over the phone when I was living in Kalamazoo, Michigan and moved straight into my apartment and haven't left.

Favorite place to spend time online
www.freedirtmedia.com, www.nytimes.com , www.espn.com, RSS feed of NPR and The Ricky Gervais Show

Favorite local business
There are sooo many but a few are: Amoeba Records, KK Cafe, Skinny Hippo Design

What I'm currently Reading
"BELUSHI" (another comedy idol of mine)

Best Deal in San Francisco
My apartment, the steamed veggies and brown rice at King of Thai Noodles, tickets to "The Romane Event".

Favorite mode of transportation
I am MUNI's bitch-monkey

Best Band or Musician to come out of the Bay Area
Best band: TARTUFI
Best Musician: Sean Hayes

Favorite Bay Area Stereotype, and whether or not you buy into it
My favorite Bay Area stereotype is that there are hordes of gay men trying to recruit straight people to play for their team. Folks think they are like Jehovah's Witness's coming to your door asking if you have accepted "cock as your personal savior".

Favorite local hangout
Toranado in the Lower Haight

SF has the BEST
Burritos, fine ladies, comedy scene and "that would only happen in SF" stories.

You've never lived in SF until
You moved here

Favorite Bay area politician of past or present
Emperor Norton. Anyone that wanted to abolish both the Democratic and Republican party is cool by me.

Now that Mayor Gavin is single, who are you going to set him up with?
A hot republican fun-raiser!

You can tell someone is a local here IF
They wear heavy coats and scarves in the Haight, pronounce Gough correctly, and think that Nevada is back east.

SF would be soooo much better if only
I was rich and warm.

Best Burrito
Yes, please...I’ll take mine with carne asada, no beans or rice, and a little lettuce.

Best Restaurant
The Pork Store, believe it

Best movie scene filmed in or about SF
The ending scene at the beach in "Salt Quest".

Favorite artist to come out of the bay area
Graffiti artist "Twist"

Favorite author to come out of the bay area
Michael Chabon

Place you always tell visitors to check out
Muir Woods

Favorite Bridge in the area
Golden Gate Bridge!

You have two hours and $15 bucks to kill in SF, what are you going to do?
Get a sandwich at M&L, buy a Cannonball Adderley LP at Groove Merchants, take a cable car ride, walk to the marina and run naked thru the numerous Gap stores.

I have found/sold/bought the following on craigslist
sex/sex/sexy stuff

I want all the SFists out there to know
That the comedy scene in SF is about to explode or at the very least it’s getting a little better. But if you like comedy there are many talented comedians here and we could use your support and $$. Also, The Romane Event goes off, the last wednesday of the month @ The Make Out Room.

Tell us a San Francisco Story
I once got a temp job at Tamale Lady Inc., down in the financial district. I had to be there really early to answer phones et al, and I was surprised at how smoothly the whole operation ran. I was allowed to sit in on a conference call with "ITs It" and "Lucas Films" and I learned some valuable lessons about the inner workings of business and what exactly a "safe harbor" statement really means. On my very first day, I was asked to sample some of their new "tamales" line and was given a "take home" bucket of sauce. Later that week as I was riding my SF Bike Coalition approved bike, with the amoeba and "I bike and I vote" stickers on it, to Zeitgeist, I saw one of the "wrapped food source handlers" (that is what they are called in the employee handbook) and was excited to see that she was handing out samples from their new line. That hot tamale kept me warm that frigid June night as I was drinking my Anchor Steam beer and reading The Bay Guardian, waiting for my craigslist, casual encounter date to show.

Question you'd ask if you were doing this interview
The best public bathroom in SF? (best meaning convenient, clean with possible newspaper available) and/or
Favorite comedian in SF...you know cause the kids love comedy.
