Interview: Lila Yomtoob

Summer can be so exhausting, vacations, covering for co-workers who are on vacation, the heat. If you’re looking for away to recover from your summer of discontent, why not consider traveling to some film festivals? Today’s interview-ee, Lila Yomtoob's,film, "High LIfe" is showing at both the Idaho International Film Festival and Pop Montreal (music and film festival) . Just the way to recover from your summer.
Lila happens to be two things SFist holds near and dear: film maker and blogger-- A dreamy, dreamy combination when it comes right down to it. When Lila isn’t racking up credit card bills to finance her films, she pays bills by doing post production sound for movies like "The Notorious Bettie Page," and "Hedwig and the Angry Inch."
Name
Lila Yomtoob
Introduce yourself in one sentence
Hi I am Lila.
Age and Occupation
31. I make money by working in sound editorial for movies. I occupy myself by making video, audio, and now some visual things too. Right now I am learning about graphic design, taking classes and interning at a design company called Plinko .
Home Town
Chicago until age 12, LA from 12 - 18, and New York from 18-31.
How much time have you spent in the Bay Area?
For the last 3 years, I have visited at least every 6 months for 2 weeks. I would like to be able to swing a bi-coastal thing, this time I am staying for 4 months (I have been here for 4 weeks). I usually stay with friends in the panhandle area, but I have a room of my own, this time in the Castro. I am writing a new movie idea, taking classes and interning, hanging around. I saved up some money so I could have a creative summer and check out SF.
Favorite website

Favorite local business
I really like the presence of independent bookstores and coffee shops here. I like that I don’t know where Barnes and Nobles or Starbucks are. In NYC there is a Barnes and Nobles every 10 blocks and a starbucks every 2 blocks.

Best Deal in San Francisco
Tacos. Mmm.
Favorite mode of transportation
Walking.
Best Band or Musician to come out of the Bay Area
Sly. I’ve heard a lot of newer local music that I like quite a bit – like Tussle and Scrabbel.
SF has the BEST:
Food and people. And names of Laundromats. And parks.
You've never lived in SF until:
I dunno, I’ve never officially lived here.
You can tell someone is a local here IF:
If they can hang out in the tenderloin or around mission and 16th and not flinch from the level of suffering around there.
SF would be soooo much better if only:
The public transportation was better at night. And there wasn’t a crack epidemic.
Best Burrito:
I haven’t had every burrito in the city (yet) so I can’t fairly answer that. I favor La Castallito
Best thing to do in the city in the summer:
Put on a scarf!
Favorite author to come out of the bay area: I’m not sure if Lawrence
Ferlinghetti is from here originally, but he is for sure my favorite poet.
Place you always tell visitors to check out:
Sutro Baths and the Tactile Room at the Exploratorium.
You have two hours and $15 bucks to kill in SF, what are you going to do?
Go for a walk and eat a good meal.
I have found/sold/bought the following on craigslist:
A subletter (NY) and a printer (SF)
I want all the SFists out there to know:
You are so lucky to live here.
