SFist Watches: Movies This Weekend

Watches 5.13.jpg

As we mentioned, SFist will be Docing around the clock at the fourth San Francisco Documentary Film Festival. There are so many fascinating films playing that you really owe it to yourself to catch a couple this week or next.

If you're looking for a more abbreviated festival, The Bridge plays host to the 2nd Annual Pleiades International Film Festival. Benefitting the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA, the festival of international short films runs from 12-4 this Sunday. Here's the agenda:

12:00 Doors open, free wine and snacks will be served
1:00 Screening begin
2:15 Intermission: more wine served, Raffle will be held
2:30 Screening resumes
3:45 Q&A session, more wine served, prizes from raffle distributed
4:00 End of Festival

Wine, movies, snacks, and a raffle -- sounds like the best school carnival ever! And all that for only 20 bucks.

But maybe you're just not up for cultural stimulation this weekend. What's out there for you?

The Roxie is showing Girl Play, a story of lesbian romance starring Dom Deluise and Mink Stole. No, we're not kidding. The Girl Play site tells us the film is a "painfully funny love story raising the complicated question, 'What do you do when true love comes and you’re already in the relationship?' We're hoping the answer will somehow involve "Father Orsini's Eggplant Balls" but given the subject matter we're not holding our breath.

If even that sounds too intellectually taxing, there's always Unleashed, which we want to see because we think it's cute that the original title is Danny The Dog. Then again, we think Jet Li as a gladiator-style fighter participating in underground matches is also cute, so maybe our cuteness standards have been warped by a lack of Beanie Baby contact or something. You can catch this Luc Besson penned action film at any of our local metroplexes, but don't come crying to us when yet another independent theater goes out of business.

How about you? Are you taking the high, low, or middle movie road this weekend? Let us know in the comments.
