Citing "quicker bus service" as the main reason, a portion of McAllister Street between Hyde and Market will go into two-way traffic mode "after previously only allowing westbound traffic." The change will go into effect on Thursday morning.
According to BCN (via SF Appeal), "The new configuration will allow Muni buses, bicycles and taxis to travel east on McAllister Street all the way to Market Street, where they can either turn left or right. All eastbound traffic previously had to turn right at Hyde Street."
What's more, the rerouting of the 5-Fulton line will save around three minutes per trip, "saving Muni more than $200,000 per year in operating expenses." The change to the 5-Fulton will go into effect later this month after new overhead wires are installed.
