This SFist gives thanks every day that we live in San Francisco. There are only a few things we miss about our former Midwestern home: Steak and Shake, our family, and the NBA. Sure, we could head across the bay to see the Warriors, but there's the whole problem with bags and stories like this sure don't help...
Well, screw that. We now have pro ball in San Francisco, with the debut of the ABA's San Francisco Pilots tonight against the Fresno Heatwave.
This Chron piece does a great job of summing up what we one time Indianapolists (what do ya say, Jake?) already know, that the ABA folded in '77 when its greatest teams were folded into the NBA. It was reborn in 2000 as a place for second-tier pro players, and is expanding more rapidly than that suspicious mole on our shoulder.
Sure, you won't be seeing ball that's consistently NBA caliber, but be they hot up-and-comers or seasoned veterans, all of the guys in the ABA are playing because they love the damn game, the kind of love this Midwestern SFist wishes we could see more of. Home games are played at the Kezar Pavilion, and season tickets are crazy cheap. Single game tickets start at 5 bucks, which is less that it would cost us to BART out to Oakland.
Thanks to Sfist reader Sugam for the tip!
