The pros and cons of law school
It looks like Survivor: Cook Island winner Yul Kwon won't get to serve you air-pumped, sugary, dairy-like deliciousness. After getting ready to set up a Red Mango chain in North Beach, and after being granted a building permit and signing a lease, his permit was pulled after he was "told he ran afoul of the strict North Beach ordinance against 'formula chain' stores," or so says the Gate. Kwon went on to say, "I sorely regret the day that I decided to open a restaurant in San Francisco, and I will never make that mistake again." Ouch. True and choice words, Puka Puka tribesman.
The only premiere tonight is yet another season of "Survivor," and this time it's "Survivor: China," which is kind of cool, we guess, although we always seem to prefer the seasons that are set on those Blue Lagoon-ish tropical isles....And we really don't have much more to say about it except, once again, there are no locals to root for. (Maybe they were getting tired of the Bay Area dominating the game. CHICKENS!) So, instead, here's a clip featuring previous local "Survivor" winner Yul Kwon talking about Asian male stereotypes with Aasif Mandvi and the Chronicle's Jeff Yang.
Did you see (video footage) all that smoke (pictures) yesterday? A fire at 17th and Noe Street between the Mission and the Castro at around 6:30 yesterday evening displaced at least 14 people, and sent seven to the hospital for smoke inhalation. One man had to be rescued off the roof. The fire spread to the building next door too, but firefighters managed to put it out before that building was too damaged. The SFFD is still investigating the cause of the fire, though one witness said she'd been repeatedly complaining to her landlord about pot smokers in the building.
