Bike to Work Day in San Francisco is ongoing. Pictured is the ride of San Francisco Bicycle Coalition Program Director Andy "The Boss" Thornley, complete with large flag just for today. (Yes, that's the official City and County flag. It's hard to read the three words underneath the bird, but we think they spell out "Pontiac Trans Am".) Looks like Andy's inside City Hall right now pressing his case for cycling in the City. Details about where to get your canvas corporate swag bag on your ride home here and here. A quick report here.
Do you think we can have just one day of bicycling that doesn't devolve into some kind of car-smashing riot, please? This Thursday: Bike to Work Day! A day to hop on your bike ... and then gasp and flounder and struggle, because you only ride once a year. Then, if your boss lets you out early, roll up to the Bike Away From Work Party at the Rickshaw Stop (155 Fell St @ Franklin) from 5-9pm. Helpful tip: you are permitted to ride your bike to work on days other than Bike to Work Day.
Of course we own a bike, and we love it. The way it sits beautifully in our garage, seeing us off in the morning as our car zooms away, and welcoming us back in the evening as we pull up the driveway. Wait, you mean you actually expect us to it? What do we look like, circus bears?
MattyMatt's bit of cinema verite in regards to Take Your Girlfriend to Work Day seems to be the hottest video in town as Phil Matier (as in Matier & Ross) has designated us as experts in this whole video blogging/YouTube thing. So tune into KPIX Channel 5 sometime around 6:30 (we think) as SFist MattyMatt and SFist Jon appear on TV yet again and play pundit. Extra special bonus: you get to see just how hungover SFist Jon is today and find out what embarrassing thing he did over the weekend that he hopes never, ever appears anywhere online.
Here's an update on a couple of stories we've been following. -After Gavin vetoed the "Healthy Saturdays" initiative, the Board of Supervisors voted to see if they could override Gavin's veto but couldn't. Once again, the vote came down to a 7-4 vote, not enough to override, with the Usual Suspects-- Alioto-Pier, Dufty, Elsbernd, and Ma-- voting no. The next steps are unclear at this point. McGoldrick says he's in negotiations with Gavin to come to some sort of resolution to the initiative but people are skeptical of Gavin's intentions. Maybe we'll have another ballot measure, but apparently this issue has been deemed too important to be left to us. BTW, we're a little confused about the fact that all the pro-bike people keep on saying Gavin vetoed the measure because he's the bitch of the rich. When did neighborhood activists and activists for the disabled and all the other people who came out against the measure suddenly become rich and powerful developers? Anyways, check out this hilarious interview with Gavin on the Bay Guardian's web site, an interview that takes place while Gavin and the reporter are riding bicycles to City Hall on Bike to Work Day. We imagine the reporter and Gavin puffing away, muttering curses at each other underneath their breath and trying desperately not to roll their eyes too much lest they accidentally crash into other bikers.
In honor of Bike-to-Work Week, we offer a kind suggestion to bicyclists: don't be such fucking morons.
