Funny, this happened just months after Mattel started designing its packaging with an AI tool from San Jose-based Adobe.

Maybe you heard about the single most hilarious scandal that happened this weekend. With the upcoming Hollywood movie version of Wicked ready to carpet-bomb America’s kids with marketing and merchandising over this coming holiday season, the toy giant Mattel released its first batch of Wicked fashion dolls to retail shelves. And the packaging for the dolls, very unfortunately, presents a link to the highly NSFW pornographic website Wicked.com instead of the correct WickedMovie.com website.

The official Mattel Wicked dolls link to a porn site on the box 😭😭 pic.twitter.com/iW4mNVAlPE
— just2good (Sarah Genao) (@just2goodYT) November 9, 2024

In a timely twist, the top video currently being promoted on Wicked.com is Stormy Daniels starring in Stormy Trumps All.

How on earth could this have happened? Mattel is not saying, and maybe they never will. All we have is a very red-faced apology statement to Variety magazine in which a spokesperson said, “Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel ‘Wicked’ collection dolls, primarily sold in the US, which intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page. We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this. Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children. Consumers who already have the product are advised to discard the product packaging or obscure the link and may contact Mattel Customer Service for further information.”

Discard the product packaging? Those dolls are now going for $300 a pop on eBay!

Ahead of its annual MAX conference, software developer Adobe recently shared a use case demonstrating how Mattel’s Barbie brand used its AI-powered Firefly to create packaging for the upcoming holiday season.
Subscribe and read more >>> https://t.co/w4vDVch7T7 pic.twitter.com/bSCbRQEftb
— Dieline (@TheDieline) October 16, 2024

Regardless, maybe what bit Mattel in the ass here is that they thought they were defying gravity by using AI tools to design their toys’ packaging. As Fast Company reported in June, Mattel had started using a generative AI product called Firefly from San Jose-based Adobe to start designing their toy box exteriors.

Per Fast Company, the AI tool promotes that “a text prompt is all that’s needed for the program to spin up its own fully formed concept image.” What could possibly go wrong!

“Mattel makes about 4,000 new toys a year, and a lot of that is packaging,” Mattel chief design officer Chris Down told Fast Company. “There’s a high volume of stuff—and that gives the first clue as to why we’d be interested in tools that would make the outcomes better or stronger, would allow the creative process to move faster, and would give us a production or creative execution advantage.”

That Fast Company article was published in late July of this year, and noted that “the resulting designs are expected to hit shelves in the coming months.” It is now three-and-a-half months later.
Wicked, the 10th longest-running musical on Broadway, has returned to San Francisco for the first time since 2013. But Wicked and San Francisco have a long history, as it was here that the show had its pre-Broadway trial run in 2003, and its swung back through SF many times since.

And shockingly, I'd never seen it.

That didn't seem to be the case with much of the audience on opening night. I heard folks around me talking about traveling some distance to "see it again," and I definitely heard a lot of singing along during the show.

While I'd never seen Wicked, I was familiar with its story, having read Gregory Maguire's original book, even if the stage version isn't entirely faithful. It centers on Elphaba, (Emily Koch), born with green skin because of her mother's fondness for a certain green elixir. As a young woman, she and her sister Nessarose, (Megan Masako Haley), who has a handicap of her own, enroll in a school that is not unlike Hogwarts. There she is bullied by most of the students, including Glinda (Amanda Jane Cooper), a popular, exceedingly bubbly blond. But, as tends to happen in these kinds of tales, they eventually become friends, and we follow they're progressions from students, to powerful witches.

Taking place in a land as magical as Oz means there are plenty of special effects, and they are, for the most part, effective and not too showy (although there were some issues with the sets on opening night). I loved how the costumes kind of played off ideas seen in The Wizard of Oz, but with some steampunk additions. And the gradual introduction of characters from the movie was a lot of fun, although I do have to say I didn't think those original flying monkeys could ever be creepier; Wicked makes them the stuff of nightmares.

The show got its start on Broadway with Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda the Good, and <strike>Adele Dazeem</strike> Idina Menzel as Elphaba the Wicked. Those are some pretty big shoes to attempt to fill, but Koch and Cooper both tackle the vocals with aplomb. But it's in their acting and comedic timing that they really shine. Koch's Elphaba is perfectly nerdy, but also tough and deadpan, while Cooper's ditzy and vain Glinda grows up a bit through the course of the play, while still maintaining that bubbly personality that's the center of her comedic performance.

They both have their standout numbers. For Glinda's it's "Popular," in which she expounds on her plans to give Elphaba a makeover. Elphaba's best moment is, of course, the now Glee-enshrined "Defying Gravity," which closes the first act, and demonstrates one of the show's best special effects.

But nothing in the second act lived up to either of those first-act numbers, and that was perhaps the most surprising thing about the production for me. I figured a show that had become so legendary would be filled with numbers I'd be humming all night. Instead, the thing I'll probably remember the most are the lovely moments of friendship between the two witches.

Oh, and those flying monkeys. *Shudder*

After a blockbusting, 20-month reign at the Orpheum Theatre, Wicked has left the building. SFist was at the Heart of the City farmers' market yesterday and spotted the set being transported out of the theater.

We're not huge theater buffs and even less into musicals, but we do kind of regret not checking out the production. In the words of Cinderella, "Don't know what you got till it's gone."

The musical, centered on the friendship between the two famed witches of Oz, originally did its pre-Broadway tryout in SF before becoming the most beloved show among tweens and less musical-theater-snobby gays. It will end its run here on September 5th, only to return, like a comet, or a yeast infection, in a couple of years. SF's production, to date, has grossed some $75 million.
A tornado (or whatever it's called before it hits the ground) was reported around 11:25 a.m. on Monday in the far off land of Merced. According to the Merced Sun-Star, even more funnel clouds could appear in the sky. "We have a very cold unstable air mass over the valley, so there's a potential for scattered showers, thunderstorms and more funnel clouds into the evening hours," says meteorologist Gary Sanger. he went on to say that this was "the first Central Valley tornado in the last 13 months."
Why have Coit Tower, the Ferry Building, and City Hall literally turned green? According to SF Citizen, it's in honor of the third return of the popular Stephen Schwartz musical Wicked. The "untold story of the witches of Oz" is based off of the popular book by Gregory Maguire novel. The musical version got its start here in San Francisco when it made its out-of-town premiere at the Currran many moons ago, and went off to New York to win several Tony Awards and gain a rabid cult following from enraptured fangirls.

Now it's come back to the Orpheum Theatre, and if you can't afford a ticket, which you can purchase here, you can always try out for the $25 lottery.

Shelby Lynne's newest release, "Just A Little Lovin'" is exactly what the title entails. Lynne has created a new (somewhat jazzy) twist on several older romantic standards such as, "I Only Want to Be With You" and "The Look of Love." The results are: sexy, sublime and sometimes even a bit steamy. It's the perfect album to accompany any romantic evening, not just Valentine's Day.
He's evil, because he can coax out hysterical giggles from people who, outside of his presence, would never even think to laugh about the subjects he discusses with glee, precision and even cruelty -- racism, the "N" word, white privilege, that Mormon girl who was kidnapped and held captive for two years half-a-block from her home and Jennifer Aniston's horse-faced ugliness.

Genius, because of his scary-good timing, Silly-Putty facial expressions, ability to size-up (and chastise and argue with) the audience, and an economy of language that puts any and all pretenders to shame. Dane Cook wishes he could tell a story like Mooney. Lisa Lampanelli probably breaks multiple Commandments coveting his withering put-downs. Any one of the Wayanses Mooney used to work with can only dream of having his relevance.

And damn, Mooney is funny. Wicked smarts are one thing, but they don't necessarily make a good comedian. The world is full of purported comedians spewing tortured one-liners whose truth, they assume, makes them funny. ("Men are nuts because they won't ask for directions." "What is the deal with women and shoes?") But turning truth-telling into laughs is an art. And perched on his stool at Cobb's last weekend, Mooney proved he's gifted.

We never thought mainstream theater would consider goths a strong potential audience, but we've already seen Wicked, Lestat (well, we'll try to forget about that one) and now Edward Scissorhands. Best of Broadway is marketing this adaptation of Tim Burton's film as a "musical without words," but we'll call it "Edward without Johnny Depp," and forgive them for that. Superstar choreographer Matthew Bourne has already put his stamp on such classics as Carmen (retitled The Car Man and featuring sexy blue-collar men and their gals) and Swan Lake (an all-male cast), so we're dying to see how his mix of classic and popular dance transforms Burton's funky suburban fairytale. And, this is a North American premiere, to boot.
Playing November 11 through December 10

Doubt at Golden Gate Theatre
If you thought you had to go to New York to see Tony Award-winning plays with their original Tony Award-winning cast, think again. This play nabbed the 2005 Tony and the Pulitzer, and Best Actress Cherry Jones and Best Featured Actress Adriane Lenox are touring with the show. (The play even picked up a Best Direction Tony.) Jones is one of American theater's grand dames, so you won't see much better, even in New York. Now, the subject matter is a bit dark: playwright John Patrick Shanley seemed inspired by all of these instances of Catholic priests going astray, and penned a story of a priest who might have done the same and a strong-minded nun who has to decide whether or not to speak up about it. (Can you believe this is by the same guy who wrote Moonstruck and Joe Versus the Volcano?) Tip: Best of Broadway is offering $25 orchestra pit seats--a huge bargain. Check out the details.
Playing through December 3

Funny But Mean Goes to the Future at Exit Theatre
Just to prove that we're not just about big touring shows--and, for that matter, that we're not just about straight theater--we're plugging sketch comedy group Funny But Mean, which bills its brand of comedy as "cruel and unusual." Hip enough to be bicoastal (its site lists New York and San Francisco cast members), the group installs itself in Exit Theatre about twice a year or so--generally, whenever producer Richard Ciccarone finds himself back in town--and very much amuses former 'Fister Eve Batey. So, we'll take her word for it and check 'em out ourselves.
Playing November 13 and 20

If you yearn for sultry saxaphones and cry when you hear the song "The Rose," there's simply no better you can do. Goths everywhere, rejoice! They finally made a musical based on Anne Rice's vampire novels. Now, our gut feeling is that this will either totally rock or totally suck, so to speak. Here's why it could totally rock: Vampires are melodramatic, and musical theater is melodramatic, so it's a perfect marriage; pop musicians Elton John and Bernie Taupin penned the music--they're not the Sisters of Mercy, but then, they're not Rodgers and Hammerstein, either; and Dave McKean is the visual concept designer. Who better than the artist responsible for those kick-ass Sandman comic book covers, not to mention all his other great projects with Neil Gaiman, plus the recent film Mirrormask? Having McKean on the project lends that extra bit of goth legitimacy. After all, isn't Sandman's sister Death as cool if not cooler than Lestat? OK, enough of the goth geeking out. Here's why it could totally suck: Look at what happened with the film version of Interview with the Vampire. Tom Cruise? Tom Cruise? Let's hope the musical sticks to Anne Rice's vision. Like the Tony Award-winning Wicked, this is a pre-Broadway world premiere, right here in San Francisco.
And he didn't come up with the cure for AIDS or polio or acid reflux disease. But just think how many people he's brought joy, merriment, and stress relief to. Not to mention all the hangovers. Millions (billions?) of people have drunk products that he helped create. And talk about impact-- think of all these people who'd have gotten better grades in school or had better guts. Without him, would sports be the same? Would guys have anything to do? Would the Toronado even exist? Would anyone have gotten laid in college? We think not.

Owades got a Doctorate in biochemistry and wrote his thesis on cholesterol. Unable to get a job in the biochemistry field, he got a job in fermentation science at Fleischmann's Yeast. His experience with Fleischmann lead to a job at Rheingold Breweries were he developed "a process to remove the starch from beer, making it lower in carbohydrates and calories and, thus, cholesterol." Et viola, lite beer.

From there, he moved onto jobs with both Miller and Budweiser helping them develop beer. In 1982, he and his wife moved to Russian Hill and bought a home in Sonoma, and it was here that he helped create the formulas for various microbreweries, including Sam Adams and Pete's Wicked Ale. Years later, he would also lend his expertise to wine makers but still pledged his allegiance to beer drinkers in the great beer vs. wine debate. In an interview with the Chron in 1992, he said "the making of wine does not require the skills of a biochemist."

Take that wine snobs!

So here's to Joseph Owades. To paraphrase the world's most famous beer drinker, Homer Simpson: "Here's to Joseph Owades, the cause of, and solution to all of life's problems!"
