SFist reader/commenter Tendernob kindly sent this find our way: I spent the holidays with my mother in Los Angeles, who collects rare first-edition books. While I was visiting, she opened "The Complete Sherlock Holmes" (circa 1930) and an old San Francisco MUNI transfer fell out. We don't know whose it was, or how long it was in that book. We're not even certain how old this ticket is, but google tells us that John M.......

From your SFist editor's district supervisor's blog: A day before the polls open, local reporters already started writing their Election winners and losers stories. While I won’t make any big predictions, I am confident in calling this season the biggest win for me… Saturday morning at 5:51, Grace Eolen blessed us with her arrival. Sarah had a brief but exciting labor and mother, baby, and proud big brother are doing great. Oh wow, she's......

The wildfire raging up near Lake Tahoe reminded us of our dear old cousin Mark. Mark Twain, that is, and what we remembered was his own brush with accidental arson up Tahoe way. It's a little-known fact, if "fact" be something that can safely ascribed to Twain's baroquely embellished reminiscences of his years out West, that he was solely responsible for a horrendous forest fire on the shores of Lake Tahoe. On Tuesday, I was waiting for a bus to take me from 4th and Market to 4th and King. A 30 came by and I got in line and waited for everyone to get off so I could board. While......

Part three in our series detailing our conversation with Nathaniel P Ford, executive director of the MTA. See part one here, part two here. Eve Batey: While I’m asking what you’re going to do for money now, of course I also want to know – Nathaniel Ford: Increase patronage! EB: Well, yeah! NF: Increase our patronage, and part of that is, speeding the system up. And that was in the SPUR Report, you know,......

This week marks the first appearance of a pet from Hopalong Animal Rescue, a Oakland-based non-profit animal rescue and adoption organization. Learn more about Hopalong by visiting their site, and check out their adoptable dogs and cats, like our pal Oreo. I keep hearing what a wonderfully mellow and loving cat I am. I would love for you to brush my medium-haired black-and-white coat which is just the softest fur you will ever touch. While......

So Carly Fiorina is no longer the most powerful woman in business, or at least, the most powerful employed woman in business. Hewlett-Packard let her go today after months of speculation that there would be a shakeup. Quoted in the Merc, "While I regret the board and I have differences about how to execute HP's strategy, I respect their decision...HP is a great company and I wish all the people of HP much success......
