The preserved head of Joaquin Murieta and the hand of Three-Fingered Jack were sold at auction today to settle their owner's legal problems.

Joaquin Murieta was a notorious and romantic figure in the early history of California. With Jack, his right-hand man, Murieta led a gang of Mexican bandits through the countryside on a three-year rampage, brutally "liberating" more than $100,000 in gold, killing 22 people (including three lawmen), and outrunning three separate posses. After posse #4 tracked him down and chopped off his head - or at least the head of someone who might possibly have maybe looked like him - Murieta's story entered California folklore.

Day Around the Bay

Thanks, CUIP-SF, for sending the following clip our way. Walter (AKA singing guy at the Board of Supervisor meetings) has returned, folks. As we mentioned yesterday, he was reported to have made a lauded return to the meetings, singing a parody of the Flipper theme song to Aaron Peskin. But while talking about SF Weekly's recent cover story about the Board of Supe prez, he also croons a bit of the Burt Bacharach's awesome breakup song "One Less Bell."

Brilliant.

There were musings among those waiting to pee as to whether a drunken reenactment of scenes from Pulp Fiction was in order or if someone should walk up and tell Tarantino that Kill Bill 2 "really sucked." We're not sure if either transpired, as most at our table were trying to play it cool and not act like the big group of fanboys and fangirls that we were. We did note that while he was inside, he seemed quite popular with the ladies.

Tarantino seemed nice enough, although very very sweaty for a cold SF night. SF Weekly has their own take on the celeb spotting here with pics. Alas, we decided to leave our camera at home since we know how pictures taken while drinking can be unflattering/incriminating. Ahem.

But the verdict sends a clear signal to small businesses, independent newspapers and the alternative press that a locally owned publication has the right to a level playing field and that a chain can’t intentionally cut prices and sell below cost to injure a smaller competitor.

The trial had been underway for more than five weeks. The Guardian charged the Weekly with violating the state’s Unfair Practices Act, a Progressive-era law that bars a company from selling a product below cost for the purpose of destroying competition.

Evidence produced in the trial showed clearly that the Weekly had been selling ads below cost. In fact, the paper had lost money every year since the New Times chain, now known as Village Voice Media, bought it in 1995.

But wait. It gets better! Redmond goes on to say "Lacey [VVM Editor In Chief] could be heard mumbling 'shit' over and over again." Ouch. Anyway, an appeal is more than certain, a process that "can take years."

Years? Ack. Let's hope that print publishing is still around by then.

In the end, though, this litigiousness all boils down to two important thing: where is the an open-bar celebratory party and is SFist invited?

SF Bay Guardian Wins Case Against SF Weekly

With regard to the SFBG vs. SF Weekly (VVM) <a href="http://sfist.com/2008/0...

SF News

alternative weeklies

Bay Guardian

Bruce Brugmann

Bush

court

guardian

Internet

lawsuit

media

Ralph Nader

San Francisco

San Francisco Chronicle

settlement

sf

SF Weekly

sfbg

Village Voice

village voice media

Weekly

Brock Keeling

With regard to the SFBG vs. SF Weekly (VVM) lawsuit -- you know, the one where the Guardian sued the Weekly and its parent company for predatory pricing practices? where the Guardian's Publisher, Bruce Brugmann, claimed that the competition was so unreasonable that it could force the Guardian out of business? -- our sources confirm that:

Wow. We would be fibbing if we said we weren't surprised by the verdict.

Appeals? For sure. Will this nonsense drag on? You bet. Village Voice Media responds:

Response from Village Voice Media to Verdict in Bay Guardian Lawsuit

Today's verdict in Bruce Brugmann's suit was an expensive lesson in laws, lawyers, and lawsuits, and how one man's obsession manipulated the system.

Like Ralph Nader, Bruce Brugmann is out of touch with reality. Feigning obliviousness to the Internet, the dot-com bust, 9/11, the Bush economy - and the $330 million lost by the San Francisco Chronicle to these very factors - Brugmann insisted in court that only SF Weekly threatened his wallet.

Jurors agreed and hit Village Voice Media with more than $15 million in damages. Brugmann thus earned in court more than he ever earned in 40 years of publishing.

*FILM: She Done Him Wrong (1933) screens at the Castro Tonight. What's is about? Well, according to CinemaSource, "Lady Lou works as a singer at the Gay Nineties saloon of Gus Jordan, who plays her with diamonds to keep her by his side. She runs afoul of stalwart Salvation Army captain Cummings, who warns her that she''s on the road to perdition. Though Lou herself steers clear of criminal activities, Gus Jordan runs a counterfeiting and white slavery ring. Also, Lou's ex-lover Chick Clark has been sent to jail for stealing diamonds for her. Things come to a boil when Chick breaks prison and goes gunning for Lou." But for all intents and purposes, it's that film where Mae West coos to Cary Grant, ""Why don't you come up some time and see me?" (Which was then changed to "...see me sometime" for her next movie, I'm No Angel.) <mtinclude blog_id="24" module="Corolla: Crest"> </mtinclude>

CLUB: Tonight's Noise Pop afterparty, intriguingly titled "Italians Do It Better In San Francisco," will be held at...Harlot. Why not? DJ Mike Simonetti spins tonight. We look forward to not remembering what happens tonight come tomorrow morning.

ART: Tonight's "Experimental Film & Video Art Series" over at Varnish Gallery, which happens on the last Wednesday of every month, features strong work by Bay Area women filmmakers. According to SF Weekly, "Terrie Samundra, known for her short film A Short Tale of Xuan; dreamy, glowing, impressionistic work by Vanessa Woods; and Jill Johnston-Price's animations are all curated by Scarlett Shepard, founder of the San Francisco Women's Film Festival." Yay! And you can get dunk off of some of the choicest wines in the Bay Area to boot.

MUSIC: There's no other noise to hear tonight save for the sounds coming from Noise Pop. Check out tonight's schedule here and here.

Yes? Well, then, SF Weekly is giving away $2,500 with their Masterminds program to someone like you. Why? Who knows, exactly. But that's a lot of money, kids. (Do you know how long it takes to amass that much cash by swiping and selling new releases at Aardvarks? About four and a half years, more or less.) Behold:

Masterminds™ is a program developed by the SF Weekly to celebrate local artists. Our goal is to honor cutting edge work being done right now in the Bay Area. Any artists demonstrating commitment and a pioneering spirit to their craft are potential Masterminds™. A grant committee selected by SF Weekly’s editorial staff will select the winners.

Their highly-skilled panel of experts will judge that stuff you call your art, coming up with nominees to be featured in a future issue of the print publication. Read more about it here, and best of luck.

Okay, SFBG, your move.
