Blocker, No. 32: Bay St. in the Marina

(Harvard.)

In an imaginary world where San Francisco neighborhoods are represented by stars’ hairstyles, the Marina is Bryan Ferry – artfully coiffed, with a subtle smattering of muss to keep the wispy-haired skeptics on their toes. Bay St. between Broderick and Baker, on the western edge of the Marina, embodies this aesthetic as well as any residential block in the district.

Since nothing remotely unusual appears to happen here much – short of the odd cataclysmic earthquake and subsequent fire (see: October 1989) – it’s up to the block’s architecture, immaculately trimmed foliage, and occasional through-walker to provide a bit of Blocker-style backbone. Otherwise, we’re relegated to a piece about all the college alumni license plate frames and window decals slapped on cars parked along this street. Not such an enticing slant.

This Week in Le Rock: Mar 3 - 9

Nicole Atkins starts this week off strong with some soulful tunes from the Jersey shore over at The Independent, starting at 8pm. Division Day, who released their debut album, Beartrap Island on Eenie Meenie Records (Scissors for Lefty, Wallpaper, Great Northern) at the end of last year is back in San Francisco. We consistently have loved everything that Eenie Meenie Records has put out, including Division Day. They will be supported by A-Sides, an indie-rock band from Philadelphia. It should be a great show!

The Hands (pictured to the right) are a straight-up rock band from Seattle, Washington. We wanted to recommend The Hands, playing over at Kimo's in Nob Hill on Friday night, but when we googled Kimo's (to find out more information about the venue), we realized that Kimo's didn't even have a website. This is 2008, right? We checked out reviews on yelp and boy we're we surprised. Kimo's was reviewed as being "dirty and disgusting" with the "worst sound ever." Ouch. There weren't too many favorable reviews posted. (Kimo's rating is a crappy two out of five stars.) For a band who is playing SXSW later this month, we're a bit surprised they aren't playing Bottom of the Hill or Slim's. We're wondering, is it really worth going to Kimo's? From what we've read, we're a bit worried. What do you think?

Google recognized the need for the homeless to have some connection to loved ones and plan to do something about it. According to the Chron:

Internet giant Google announced on Wednesday a plan to partner with all the homeless shelters in San Francisco and offer free phone numbers and voice mail accounts to homeless individuals, giving people the ability to distribute their own phone numbers and retrieve voice mail messages left for them whenever and from wherever they choose.

The plan is to help those who are homeless get back on their feet by giving potential employers and family a way to reach them and get their life on track. Hopefully, this'll be a way to get them started.

Ten locations, including two in San Francisco, were busted today in connection with a methamphetamine distribution setup that went from San Francisco and the Bay Area all the way to Mexico. Federal, state, and local law enforcement. In total 13 people were arrested. According to KGO:

The raids started simultaneously at 6 a.m. Wednesday morning with 200 agents moving in on the ten locations. Law enforcement was in a hurry to execute their search warrants.

"We believe it's responsible for distribution on the streets of up to 20 pounds of methamphetamine per month," says Joseph Schadler, an FBI agent.

"How much is that in street value?" asks reporter.

"A quarter million dollars[ish]," says Schadler.

On the brighter side, those black helicopters will stop spying on you. And you can quit plucking your eyelashes; there really are no radio transmitters embedded inside of them. (...or are there?)

Also, will this affect cocaine distribution? We can't say. Any DEA-knowledgeable readers out there care to tell us what the overlap is with regard to meth and coke retail sales? Will this bust make a dent in powdery substance use here in the Bay Area?

*FILM: She Done Him Wrong (1933) screens at the Castro Tonight. What's is about? Well, according to CinemaSource, "Lady Lou works as a singer at the Gay Nineties saloon of Gus Jordan, who plays her with diamonds to keep her by his side. She runs afoul of stalwart Salvation Army captain Cummings, who warns her that she''s on the road to perdition. Though Lou herself steers clear of criminal activities, Gus Jordan runs a counterfeiting and white slavery ring. Also, Lou's ex-lover Chick Clark has been sent to jail for stealing diamonds for her. Things come to a boil when Chick breaks prison and goes gunning for Lou." But for all intents and purposes, it's that film where Mae West coos to Cary Grant, ""Why don't you come up some time and see me?" (Which was then changed to "...see me sometime" for her next movie, I'm No Angel.) <mtinclude blog_id="24" module="Corolla: Crest"> </mtinclude>

Where a long-defunct tugboat and heady pile of fragrant tree bark don’t seem out of place alongside the road.

Rupert Murdoch to Buy Yahoo!?

So, you didn't like Microsoft, did you? Well, how about News Corp.?

In an attempt to rejuvenate Yahoo and fend off Microsoft's advances, Rupert Murdoch's media conglomerate is reportedly in talks to purchase Yahoo. Although claiming that his company is "not interested in buying Yahoo," the Merc reports:

The Wall Street Journal, which is owned by News Corp., reported Wednesday that its parent company is considering taking a stake in Yahoo that could exceed 20 percent. The deal could be presented to Yahoo shareholders as an alternative to Microsoft's proposal. However, it is more likely to help Yahoo extract a better price from Microsoft.

Although, according to the Wall Street Journal, a "sale to Microsoft still appears to the most likely scenario for Yahoo." We shall see.

Mayor Newsom Endorses Mark Leno

After Carole Migden won the endorsement of the Harvey Milk Club, things were looking grim for Assemblyman Mark Leno. But today Gavin Newsom shined his megawatt charm over in Leno's direction today, endorsing his bid for a state Senate seat. According to the B.A.R., " Newsom [is] expected to publicly endorse Leno Wednesday night at the Herbst Theatre during a special screening of Pursuit of Equality..."

Leno is trying to dethrone state Senator Carole Migden from her Third District seat. The two bent lawmakers will go head to head during the June 3 primary. (Another election? Oh man.) San Francisco Police Commissioner Joseph Alioto Veronese and former state Assemblyman Joe Nation (who, it seems, just entered the race last Saturday) will also make an attempt to steal the seat, but neither candidate is expected to win.

Jodie Evans, a cofounder of Code Pink and a yoga studio owner, says they'd like to put the measure on a ballot anyways, so, there. Hey, maybe they can combine that with the Peace Center and Berkeley will shoot off holographic images into the air, something we're sure, many in Berkeley would get off on, especially if it was done to Floyd. Anyways, you can read a live blog of the protest here, including details of dueling radios consisting of one side blasting the National Anthem and the other Culture Club’s "The War Song." No, we’re just joking, they blasted Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" and, wait for it-- Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'," Jesus, aren't there any songs they can play that isn't over 40 years old? There's gotta be at least five Rage Against the Machine songs they could have played and they friggin' rock. Or, hell, Black Sabbath's "War Pigs." Come on everybody: "Generals gathered in their masses/Just like witches at black masses/Evil minds that plot destruction/Sorcerers of deaths construction."

Hot Stuff: Food Section Round Up

We gobble the various food sections up each Wednesday. Alas, we got to Davies Symphony Hall before we could see if he'd made good on the threat.

Tonight's performance featured guest conductor Ingo Metzmacher, who looked adorably like Schroeder from Peanuts, except instead of Beethoven, Metzmacher loves 20th century Eastern European composers, with Ligeti, the Bartok Piano Concerto no. 3, and the Shostakovich Symphony No. 6 on the program.

Ligeti wrote the San Francisco Polyphony in our fair city in 1973-74. The program notes reiterated several times that the listener should not expect this to be some kind of musical picture of SF, but we'll fall into that easy trap anyways and say that Ligeti must have written the piece in the summer, because it sounds kind of sunshine-y/foggy. Also -- we deeply enjoyed the section of the piece that sounded like Critical Mass. Our city rules.

So! You're probably still wondering why we have a picture of Christian's outfit from Wednesday's Project Runway up there, aren't you? We'll explain after the jump.
