Wind Advisory Issued for Bridges

Additional high wind advisories are in effect for two Bay Area bridges this morning. "Motorists on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge are advised that gusts reaching 50 mph are forecast for both roadways today." This, of course, is in addition to the high wind advisory for the entire San Francisco Bay Area.

Wind Advisory Issued

Time to break out the Aqua Net. A wind advisory is in place for San Francisco, Santa Cruz, San Mateo, Marin, Monterey, Contra Costa, Napa, Sonoma, Santa Clara and Alameda counties counties, lasting until 11 am tomorrow.

Due to extensive flooding, Muni temporarily shutdown subway service at 4:15 p.m.

Even more rain blanketed the city today, flooding streets. From the Mission to Hayes Valley, the streets are soaked. Please drive carefully.

How's About That Rain?

It's currently pouring cats and puppies outside SFist HQ, and we feel woefully under-informed about this development. We just read this morning that the heaviest rain was supposed to hit north of here, and, well, this looks heavy to us! Another typhoon remnant, you ask? No, but The Weather Underground is now noting this "heavy band of rain" moving across the city, and drivers are advised to be careful in their commutes -- especially if you're heading east or north where flooding may occur. And is it just us, or is all the downpouring lately feeling way more Decemberish than Octoberish to you?

Here are some lovely images from the aftermath of yesterday's storm. Thanks for washing the city, Mother Nature!

BREAKING: Christian Siriano Refuses to Cross Golden Gate Bridge

This just in: Project Runway winner Christian Siriano (author of Fierce Style: How to Be Your Most Fabulous Self) has canceled his Litquake event tonight in Corte Madera. Why? Because, sadly, he "won't cross the Golden Gate bridge in the bad weather." .

In the middle of a conversation about roaring fires and Muir Woods' Pelican Inn with San Francisco scribe/on-air talent Beth Spotswood, she informed us that Mill Valley is "blasting the emergency sirens." (Mill Valley, by the way, performs their weekly emergency alarm test on Saturdays.)

This dastardly tree, at Haight and Broderick, came tumbling down, nearly crushing this cute cyclist.

NextBus Blows A Fuse

Although Muni is (understandably) having major delays today due to the rain, NextBus, it seems, is also out-of-order. On the worst possible day, too. Ugh.

Devil's Slide Fatality Closes Highway 1

Presumably due in part to this morning's weather, CBS 5 is saying that "[t]he CHP reports a fatal accident has closed Highway 1 at Devil's Slide.

Tsunami <s>Warning</s> Advisory (?!)

At the risk of sounding like an alarmist -- oh hush, yous -- a tsunami warning has been issued for the California and Oregon coasts. We're not buying it. But still, check it.

Dangerous Heatwave Approaches

A major heatwave is supposed to be heading our way this weekend, with triple digits inland and 80s/90s near the coast by next week. The "real heat," according to the KRON 4 weather lady, will begin on Tuesday, the first day of fall. So, if you have any elderly people, infants, and/or redheads lying around, make sure they're kept comfy in climate-controlled areas and their fluids replenished. It's going to be a scorcher next week.

Vile Weather Prompts 'Spare the Air' Day

Noting that today's warm weather throughout most of the Bay Area is simply unbearable, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District has declared today a Spare the Air Day. "Hot temperatures and light winds are expected to produce unhealthy air throughout the region, so the district is encouraging commuters to drive less, take public transit, walk, bike, carpool, link necessary trips and postpone errands, if possible," reports CBS 5. And, as always, there will be NO free transit. (Alas.)

This Summer Has Actually Been Chillier Than Usual

It's not your imagination, friends. That impenetrable marine layer and frustrating fog have, in fact, been a little worse than average according to Examiner.com today: "San Francisco's average high temperature for June, July and August was 67.0 degrees, almost a degree and a half below the 30-year normal of 68.4 degrees. Over the course of the three-month (92 day) summer period the daily temperature was only above normal on 21 occasions." So, that means we've had three weeks worth of warm days scattered throughout, but still we're coming up short. Like some experts have said, global warming is going to turn SF into Seattle. San Jose had it worse, with average temperatures over three degrees below normal. Let's hope this trend reverses itself for Indian Summer! Sweating never felt so good as it did this weekend!

'Spare the Air' Day

Today, August 10th, is a 'Spare the Air' day in the Bay Area due to the ugly, intense heat we're experiencing. While 'Spare the Air' days used to mean a free day of BART and Muni transit, that is no longer the case. Instead, you are now urged to carpool, take public transit, bike or walk to work (or wherever) help to reduce smog pollution. Today will be the hottest day this week -- it should get up to 100-degrees inland! -- with very slight cooling expected to come our starting tomorrow.

Severe Weather Alert: Icky Heat

The National Weather Service is warning of a "heat advisory" this weekend. All North Bay valleys and East Bay valleys should be on alert for oppressively hot weather continuing until Sunday. "High temperatures are expected to reach the 90s and as high as 101," reports the NWS. Also, an "excessive heat warning" has been placed on Santa Clara and San Jose until Sunday. So, if you can, stay out of the sun, turn up the air-conditioning, wear a hat, and check on the elderly folks who wilt under this kind of heat San Francisco, however, will be delightful throughout the weekend. Check Weather Underground for more information.

WTF, June Rain?

In the topsy-turvy, globally warmed San Francisco we seem to be living in, all rules about the rain ending in May are apparently out the window. There were some sizable handfuls of rain being thrown on us Tuesday night, and today there's a 40% chance of *thunderstorms*. While this is good news for the drought-conscious (we think we're still only at 75% of the average precipitation but we don't know how to read this Executive Summary from the Dept. of Water Resources), and for the storm-revelers, for the rest of us it's just a pisser. The rest of the weekend promises to be partly sunny, with typical June highs in the low 60s. Thus ends our weather whining for at least a week.

Have a great weekend and be sure to wear your sunscre-- oh, wait. Sorry. As of posting this gloriously chilly image, it's a cozy 49 degrees outside.

Inappropriate Attire at Dolores Park

Hey, guys, thanks for stopping by our office. We know you have a lot of work this morning, but would you mind stepping inside for a second? This won't take long. Please, have a seat. And close the door behind you. Thanks.

Spare the Air Day Extended

Due to today's arguably miserable weather -- 88 degrees in downtown SF as of 2 p.m.! 92 degrees at Mineta San Jose International Airport! SFist Editor's Caramello liquefied beyond recognition! -- today's Spare the Air Day has been extended until Tuesday. That is to say, you should take public transit in lieu of driving, turn up the air conditioner if you're harboring infants or the elderly in your home or office, "avoid using gas-powered lawn movers and leaf blowers," cook indoors and not on a barbecue (AKA "grilling" to you foodies); and keep the Aqua Net to a minimum. Public transit, we should point out, is no longer free on Spare the Air Day. Alas.

Wind Advisory Alert

Sure is blustery today, isn't it? And to top it off, a wind advisory will be in place until 11 p.m. tonight. According to CBS 5 weather report:

Enjoy.

Schwarzenegger to Declare California in "Drought Emergency"

In addition to the jarring unemployment rate announced today, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will "declare a state of emergency after three years of below-average rain and snowfall in California," according to reports. Although the recent rain has been refreshing, it has not helped moisten, if you will, more parched parts of the state. CBS 5 reports that "[t]he drought has forced farmers to fallow their fields, put thousands of agricultural workers out of work and prompted conservation measures in cities throughout the state." Arnold's order of emergency will "direct state agencies to provide assistance for affected communities and businesses." Chin up, California.

Bay Area, Drenched

The recent (and much-needed) rainfall in the Bay Area has resulted in power outages, fallen trees, and road closures. Hail has been reported in Potrero Hill. The Upper Haight was "like a monsoon." Even a flood advisory (as of 10:30 a.m.) is in effect this morning. But! A brief fdry spell is expected to start Wednesday, which will be followed by even more rain on Friday. Woo hoo! (Be sure to check Weather Underground for all your meteorological needs.)

"Inside the ice cave" by Darwin Bell, who was just up in Tahoe, where he captured the above shot. Local mountains, by the way,are covered in snow. So this is the weekend to, like, go sledding and stuff.

Tornado Almost Hits Merced

A tornado (or whatever it's called before it hits the ground) was reported around 11:25 a.m. on Monday in the far off land of Merced. According to the Merced Sun-Star, even more funnel clouds could appear in the sky. "We have a very cold unstable air mass over the valley, so there's a potential for scattered showers, thunderstorms and more funnel clouds into the evening hours," says meteorologist Gary Sanger. he went on to say that this was "the first Central Valley tornado in the last 13 months." In related news, you should check out Wicked, which is playing at the Orpheum Theater, if you have the chance. It is surprisingly good.

Creepy Weather Coming to an End?

The mild heatwave we've been experiencing will, at last, come to an end, at least according to the National Weather Service. As soon as Wednesday, we should see clouds blanket the sky, followed by a much-needed downpour. (Fingers crossed!) That said, today would be the day to perfect your fake cough and faux dizziness at work. This might be the last summery winter day this season. Hopefully. California is, after all, in the middle of a vicious drought.
