Yuck. It's cold. It's gray. Your head hurts. The sting of a Niners playoff loss is that much harder to suffer through under the fluorescent buzz of office lighting on a Monday morning. The knowing looks from other pickled Muni riders this morning were less than consolation — more of an acknowledgement of the city's collective hangover. But if there's a bright side (and there's always a bright side in San Francisco, it's just usually down there in Potrero Hill somewhere) it's that even the usual bearers of bad news are calling for a sunny end to the week.
Weather Report: Clear Skies Following Brief Period Of Hangovers
Soggy Candlestick Prepares For 49ers-Giants NFC Championship
A stormy day hasn't kept fans from cheering on the San Francisco 49ers today. All across San Francisco, residents are sporting an abnormal amount of red, white, or gold. Rightfully so. The 49ers take on the New York Giants at 3pm for the NFC title. Here are some shots of the 'Stick getting ready for the big game.
Freezing Temperatures Ravage Bay Area
Temperatures last night dropped to freezing conditions, with numbers hitting the 20s in the North Bay. San Francisco will reach around 56 today, with the highest temperature going to Mountain View with 62 degrees. Rain, which would bring some relief to this dry-skin weather, might fall come Thursday. Anyway, it's chilly. We could barely sleep last night what with the prickly weather jabbing us throughout the evening. Time to crank up your space heaters, folks. Brr.
Meanwhile, On The Bay Bridge...
Photographer and occasional Mission Mission contributor Ariel Dovas snapped this shot of the Bay Bridge trapped in fog this afternoon. "He called is The Bay Bridge Having Pea Soup for Lunch."
Strong Winds, Power Outages Expected To Slam Bay Area
According to PG&E, strong winds will hit the Bay Area over the next two days. This could result in power outages and ruined hairdos. "The utility is anticipating some power outages if the wind storm produces the 60 mph gusts that weather forecasters are predicting," PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian told BCN.
Bay Area Fog Advisory Issued
Due to the cliched fog blanketing the Bay Area this morning, the National Weather Service issued a fog advisory. It will be in effect until 11 a.m. What does that mean for you? Well, it means that drivers on Bay Area bridges and roads should proceed with caution, because visibility it something awful.
Scene of Occupy SF Camp Before Rain Arrives
Josh Sullivan snapped this shot of the Occupy SF encampment at Justin Herman Plaza this week. A heavy storm is scheduled for Friday, which makes us wonder: what will happen to Occupy camps once serious rain falls? Will people stay? Move to drier grounds? Will Jean Quan move in on the Occupy Oakland tent city during Friday's scheduled showers? We shall see.
Brace Yourselves: Wet, Blustery Weather on the Way
Monday's wet spot may have dried up today, but don't get too comfortable with the brief return of the Indian Summer. According to the AP's weather team, we've got another wet, blustery storm on the way. The storm is expected to annoy the Bay Area with "nuisance floods" and umbrella-inverting gusts up to 30 mph starting this evening and making for a very soggy commute tomorrow morning. While we're sure that will suck on the way to work, there is one shining ray of hope for winter sport enthusiasts: the storm could bring up to a foot of snow to the Sierras and Lake Tahoe.
Weather: Rain Returns
That slight warm patch of weather that typically hits San Francisco around this time of year might have come and gone already. Today at around noon-ish, rain will pour down on the city, wiping away weeks of dirt, grime, and chalky film. But, according to The Chronicle, today's drenching won't be nearly as big as tomorrow's storm "forecast to blow through Northern California starting late Tuesday or early Wednesday."
Spare the Air Today, Please
Today's supposed to be disgustingly hot, so the Bay Area Air Quality Management District called for another Spare the Air day. Which is to say: stay away from your car if you can help it, ride a bike, reduce household energy use,no barbecues, avoid using Aqua-net, and spray paints, and don't light shit on fire. Temperatures should reach a scorching 75 in San Francisco.
Google Maps Adds Weather
Working yet again with the Naval Research Lab, Google unveiled their first real-time weather layer to go with Google Maps. The weather feature will show current temperatures and conditions around the world. This makes the 11th layer one can implement while using maps, with traffic and transit being the most popular. Give it a try, won't you?
Meanwhile, Near Fort Point...
Surfers take advantage of the swells for some midweek action under the bridge. Should be just as beautiful for the duration of the three-day (!) weekend ahead. Enjoy the sun while we have it, folks.
Mini-Heatwave Prompts Spare the Air Alert
Since temperatures have soared past the billion-degree mark (88 degrees, technically), a Spare the Air Day alert will be in effect for Tuesday. It wil be the first of the season. Second verse, same as the first: you're asked to curb your driving, take public transportation if possible, shun gas-powered garden tools, and cook indoors rather than grill outside. And while it's not a Spare the Air Day recommendation, we suggest making Anne Burrell's Chilled Asparagus Soup with Goat Cheese. (Can you think of any other no-oven/no-cooking recipes? We'd sure love to hear them.) [via Chron]
Scary Moments in the Bay During Father's Day
Due to the refreshingly gorgeous weather we're having -- from the windows outside SFist headquarters on busy Third Street, it seems that many of you took the day off; it's practically barren outside! -- many folks took to boating in the Bay over the weekend. One incident in particular resulted in a family's boat being capsized. You see, during a Father's Day cruise in the water on Sunday, a father and his two kids had to be "rescued 500 yards south of Ballena Bay in Alameda when their 19-foot aluminum boat capsized before 11:40 a.m."
Your Memorial Day Weekend Forecast
San Francisco is doing that wet thing again. Not quite rain, but too misty and thick to be classified as fog. The post-commute dampness on your carefully considered outer layer isn't doing anything to help with that checked-out feeling you get just before the three day weekend. Your morning will be a two-coffee slog to an uninspired FiDi steam tray lunch before arriving at an afternoon break in the clouds. Convince your boss you need to pop out early (no one is getting any work done anyway) and then focus all your creative energies on deciding which bar has ideal happy hour conditions.
Scenes from a Tree Blown Over in Duboce Park
Local photog Brendan Luna snapped these shots of a tree blown over by fierce winds in Duboce Park on Saturday. "Windy conditions on Saturday at about 2 p.m. caused a large tree in Duboce Park to be uprooted and fall on parked vehicles," reports the Examiner. "A fire dispatcher said no one was injured. Winds were gusting from the west up to 27 mph."
Scenes of Landslides and Collapsed Roadways on Highway 1 in Marin and Monterey Counties
We mentioned on Friday that Big Sur is basically cut off after a section of Highway 1 disappeared on March 16 and then another landslide blocked access to Highway 46. But were you aware that Highway 1 is also down to one lane in Marin as well, near mile marker 4.80, and a slide in Sonoma County closed part of the route over the weekend too? As the Chron's reporting, "While [Caltrans is] at work [repairing the road in Marin], until about 5 p.m. daily through at least Wednesday, a pilot car will lead drivers through the area."
Big Sur Cut Off After Storm Melee
Around 40 miles of Highway 1 are cut off this morning after last night's storm caused a landslide and mudslide near Big Sur. "The latest rockslide happened yesterday (Thursday) near Limekiln State Park. Caltrans crews were trying to clear the slide, when a large boulder careened into a front-end loader. The slide now blocks Big Sur's access to Highway 46," reports NBC Bay Area. "Highway 46 was the only way to get to the community, after a slide last week crumbled a section of Highway 1 north of Big Sur. That section is not expected to open until next month." [NBC]

Weather Report, Featuring Chance of Hail
The grayness and wetness is expected to continue today, with thunderstorms possible this afternoon. Also, a chance of hail, and a 90% chance of Camus-esque malaise. Music recommendations: Band of Horses, Elliott Smith, June Christy, Joan Armatrading. Tomorrow: breezy, with the faintest hope of sunlight, and satisfaction.
More Rain: High Wind, Flash Flood, Thunderstorm, and Hail Warnings Today
Get out those ponchos. We expect to see a lot of mangled umbrella carcasses out there today (our annoying pink Tote included, we've been trying to get rid of that crappy thing for a while now, but it somehow keeps on ticking). Bay City News via SF Appeal warns that the Bay Area can expect high winds and possible flash floods today.
Weather: We Were Promised Lots of Thunder, Lightning
Sure, we saw some lightning on Saturday night. But not much. Not much at all. And we were told there would be lots of thunder and lightning during this weekend's limp storm. Instead, said powerful storm headed down south and pounded the Grapevine, resulting in a rather lovely Sunday afternoon here in San Francisco. (We walked around Union Square with iced espresso! The mind boggles.)
Video: Small Funnel Cloud Touches Down at Ocean Beach
At around 9:30 a.m. this morning, a developing funnel cloud touched down at Ocean Beach. There's mildly jarring footage of it, too! NBC Bay Area explains: "The tornado on the water was captured on video off Ocean Beach in San Francisco by Rick Gutierrez. He posted it on YouTube with a caption that explained it was taken Friday at 9:24 a.m. 'I was looking outside my window. There was a very dark cloud and there it was,' Gutierrez wrote. The tornado on the water was captured on video off Ocean Beach in San Francisco by Rick Gutierrez. Tornado Warning Issued Expires for San Mateo County Coast
This just in: a tornado warning has been issued for the San Mateo County Coast. Cool! (Can we say that?) San Mateo County Office of Emergency Services send out the following alerts at around 11:15 a.m.: "The Callifornia Weather Service has issued a Tornado Warning for the San Mateo County Coast. Tornado Approaching San Mateo County Coast. Please be alert and seek shelter."
Weather: Rain, Wind, Sadness
Well, that tears it! The weekend will be a wet one. Miserably so. In fact, San Francisco is poised to get a good drenching any minute now. A chance of thunderstorms will linger throughout the weekend, with a strong one coming in on Sunday. Stay dry, folks.
San Francisco Snow Watch 2011: We're Not Getting Any Snow
Right off the bat, let's clear the air: Enough with the snow sites, people. After posting about cutesy isitsnowinginsfyet.com on Thursday, our inbox has been bombarded with other similar snow-update sites. Snow's now a thing. It's this month's bacon-cupcake-KUSF-Dolores Park-cookies-dangling-from-a-window-in-Egypt story over which editors get damp. We get it. But enough. No one likes a winker. And, yes, we're culpable of promoting snow as a twee news item, but... stop. Please. We can't post all the adorable, minimalist sites about whether or not frozen water will fall from the sky.
Rain Wreaks Havoc, Power Outages
Last night's (snow-free!) rain pounded the Bay Area last night, resulting in power outages throughout the Bay Area. This morning, minor flooding shutdown parts of Cesar Chavez. Wind gusts in San Francisco reaches 40 MPH. No sign yet of snow, but... fingers crossed.
Today's Most Important Website: Is It Snowing In SF Yet?
Bored at work today, Mission Mission reader Sean C. created a timely site that asks, "Is it snowing in San Francisco yet? " Brilliant use of unflinching, stark minimalism, Mr C.!
San Francisco Snow Watch 2011: When?!
A snow icon on our weather app? The mind boggles.
So, sadly, we did not wake up this morning to a snow blanketed city. When will we get it? Who knows. The National Weather Service predicts: "Friday night: A chance of rain showers before 10pm, then a chance of rain and snow showers. Snow level 600 feet...Little or no snow accumulation expected."
