We were on the fence about continuing to cover the show, as the only local left, Jack, was really just a quasi-local, as he went to Cal. But who are we kidding? If one of the designers once stopped at SFO during a flight to Hawaii, we'd be willing to call them a local, that's how much we love "Project Runway." So we went into this episode all ready to root for Jack, rah rah, team Jack! He's already won one challenge, he's the guy to beat! Plus, there are naked photos of him on the Internets! Awesome! And there he is! Pressing some kind of cloth to his face and talking about a pimple he had a few days ago.

Last week's pathetic challenge still hung in the air this week with the designers discussing Carmen's exit, and Chris proposing a "Project Runway" fragrance that would be a mixture of tears, sweat, and Chinese food. Can't be any worse than the odors Paris Hilton has been hawking. After some stuff with the models that was a bit confusing and boring, Heidi told the designers Tim was waiting for them in the work room and he wasn't alone. He had a familiar face with him, and she had some old friends with her. Sweet P immediately suspected they'd be designing clothes for senior citizens, which had us pondering just how the clothing needs of the elderly might differ from those of, say, the middle aged. More Velcro? Elastic waist bands? Alas, we may never know, as it turned out Nina Garcia was the familiar face, and she told the designers they were going to incorporate outdated fashion trends into modern apparel.

SFist Watches: Your Locals On Reality TV

Previously on "Project Runway" the models were forced to kowtow to the f...

Arts & Entertainment

Bravo

celebrity

Fashion

football

gays

Giants

media

models

NBC

New York

new york giants

people

Project Runway

Rockefeller Plaza

star trek

Television

this week

Tiki Barber

tim gunn

TV

WatchesTelevision

Rain Jokinen

Heidi walked on to the runway wearing Uhura's "Star Trek" uniform--seriously--and told the designers they weren't going to need their models for this week's challenge.
Tim went on the explain to all the gays and girls that Mr. Barber once played football for the New York Giants, and is now a correspondent on NBC's "Today" show. And he likes clothes. So his appearance on the show has nothing to do with the fact that he's on an NBC TV show, and NBC also owns the Bravo network, and he'll then go on the "Today" show wearing the winning outfit therefore promoting "Project Runway." This could be a more entertaining aspect of the show if the models were given the chance to display any kind of personality, but so far they haven't. (Also, how awesome would it be if "America's Next Top Model" contestants had to be models on this show? SO awesome, that's how awesome.)

So, he picked her, she picked her, he picked her, yadda yadda, on with it. Heidi then told the designers they'd be designing for a "pop culture and fashion icon." Remember the season they were told the same thing and it turned out they had to design dresses for Barbie? The designers pondered who (or what) that icon could be, and they threw out the names Madonna, Britney, and Snow White. You know. Snow White, the fashion icon!

Eventually Tim Gunn entered the studio to introduce the icon: Sarah Jessica Parker! There was much clapping, hooping, hopping, and hollering. And some crying. Yes, crying. By our boy Chris, no less! He explained that he was overcome with emotion because "Sex and the City" is the reason he decided to move to New York. We'd be watching not matter what, but we are doubly excited about this season because there are two--TWO!--designers from San Francisco competing this time around.

Next is Simone LeBlanc, who studied at the California College of the Arts, but now resides in Los Angeles, and already has her own clothing line, TS Bloom.
Ms. LeBlanc and her clothing line brings up a good point about this season: the contestants seem to have a lot more experience than in previous years. Perhaps the producers are realizing it takes more than this show to launch a career? It takes a career and winning the show to launch a career.

The day started with Sheena's parents dragging her and her bachelor behind their boat in an inner tub. Which, you know, fine. Some people like that kind of thing. But then Sheena's mother started talking about astrology and the stars and how Brad and her husband are the same sign and the big dipper can be seen from their jacuzzi and she knows Sheena is the one and she couldn't take her eyes off of Brad's eyes and both his eyes and Sheena's eyes together are "Wow!" and she and her daughter are totally ready to commit to marriage.

But remember that musical TV dramas have a proud history in Britain, most impressively in the Dennis Potter miniseries "The Singing Detective" and "Pennies From Heaven." Another example is the show "Laughlin" is based on, "Blackpool," (which aired on BBC America as "Viva Blackpool"). This American version focuses on Ripley Holden (played by Lloyd Owen, another Brit sporting a bad American accent), a businessman opening a casino in Laughlin, Nevada. His former business partner turns up dead, and the plot starts rolling. And it's a yawn. You'd think having the characters burst into song would liven things up, but you'd be wrong. Where the musical numbers in "Blackpool" had a kind of balls-to-wall, give-it-your-all, no matter how dumb it looks feeling, the scenes in "Laughlin," when they do happen, are dull, dull, dull. Most of the time characters just charge through a room singing over a musical track. Hugh Jackman shows up for one number singing "Sympathy for the Devil" that comes kind of close to the "Blackpool" feel, mainly because it actually involves back-up dancers and some choreography, but for the most part, "Viva Laughlin" is an embarrassing mess. No, not all of us are football fans. In fact, some of us loathe football. And yes, the human drama surrounding the town and its denizens is realistic and moving, but still. The whole town lives for football, and it's just not something we can relate to in any way.

Despite all that, we watched the entire first season, and we watched the second season premiere last week, and were a little perturbed by one plot development that just seems like it was taken from a different show entirely. We're hoping it plays out in a satisfactory way come the second episode of the season, but if it doesn't, it doesn't bode well for the direction the series is going. The characters on the show are what kept us (barely) watching, so if they start to screw their stories up in ridiculous ways, they may just lose us completely.
