So, stay tuned all next week for SFist reports from the trenches, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be out there seeing some of these movies for yourself. Before we get to our picks from these fests, here's some news (remember: you heard it first on SFist) from our pals at IndieFest:

IndieFest is opening a year round gallery/live theater/movie house/event space. We open on Thursday December 1st with the return of Re-Animator for a two week run. We'll be showing movies, presenting plays and art shows, fashion shows, live music, you name it. If it's indie, underground, alternative it'll have a home at IndieLoft. There are a bunch of great alternative venues in San Francisco and we hope this space will compliment them and keep alt-arts thriving in SF.... the space is 3000 sq/ft with 12 ft ceilings near Mission and 17th. We'll be able to seat 120-150. We're looking for theater companies now to fill our calendar starting in January. We're available for film festivals, private screenings, and private events.

We're thrilled as all hell because we think that the city wants and needs a venue like this, and the IndieFest folks are the best ones for the job. Congratulations, y'all! You can contact them at info AT sfindie.com.

Both are mandatory viewing, but we recommend ever-so-slightly higher, due to its having a bit more mass appeal. Romance! Intrigue! Stunning fight scenes! Sexy love scenes! Sparkly dialogue! Surprising fatalities! It's pretty much everything we were hoping a Whedonesque movie would be. You don't have to have seen "Firefly," the TV show on which the movie is based, to jump right in; with some clever flashbacks and a Touch-of-Evil-esque introduction, everything is set up: crazy girl on the run from evil government, hiding on a run-down ship in a time that resembles post-Civil-War reconstruction but is set 500 years in the future. Someone scary is chasing our heros for secrets they don't even know they have; and in this movie, evil really IS everywhere, from a psychotic government agent to space-cannibals to horrible secrets embedded in a graceful 17-year-old girl. It opens pretty much everywhere in town today.
Serenity

SFist Watches: Movies This Weekend, Special Stuff We've Already Seen Edition

Not a lot going on this weekend! That was before we saw that Mick LaSalle liked it, so now we're sure it's crap. Instead, we're harking back to some classic cinema, stuff we've either seen before (or should have).
The Exorcism of Emily Rose

SFist Watches: Evil Aliens

There's only one show to see this weekend, and it's playing tonight at 10:30 at the Roxie.

Arts & Entertainment

Another Hole

commenters

Evil Aliens

money

WatchesMovies

Eve Batey

There's only one show to see this weekend, and it's playing tonight at 10:30 at the Roxie.

We wrote about seeing last Saturday at the (Yet) Another Hole in the Head festival, and we f**cking loved it. IndieFest patron Mike Skurko raves about it on the IndieBlog, IMDB commenters are going nuts about it, and we promise you will too. This is how serious we are about this: we are going to the show tonight, and we are paying -- with money -- to see it again.
Evil Aliens
