In addition to the gaggle of Democratic hopefuls looking to succeed Gov. Schwarzenegger after his reign comes to an end -- which include former governor Jerry Brown, former state controller Steve Westley, and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, just to name a few -- San Francisco's very own mayor wants the title as well.

And seeing as how any serious contender "would need to raise anywhere from $30 to $40 million to mount a serious campaign," our wealthy mayor has a pretty good shot. According to CBS 5, Newsom "has been meeting privately with Democratic campaign strategists" about making the move from SF to Sacramento. CBS 5 goes on to say that "it's premature to talk about it in the open...we'll see what happens in the next few months."

SFist Tossup: Who Ya Got?

SF News

Antonio Villaraigosa

Features

friends

Gavin Newsom

LA

Newsom

Phil Angelides

SF Politics

Villaraigosa

rita

According to PJ Corkery's Examiner column, remember when Kimmie and Gavin went out a few weeks ago to the Tosca? And Matt Gonzalez was there that night (scroll down) too? With Sean Penn?

Well, someone (our bet is that it's Kimberly, since Kimberly talks to PJ all the time) told PJ that Matt went up to Gavin and noted how funny it was that new L.A. mayor Antonio Villaraigosa beat James Hahn after being defeated by Hahn four years before. Gavin, swift as a hare, says, ".....are you running again, Matt?" Matt smiled, and walked away. Someone then reported that Kimberly then went up to Matt and said, OMG Matt, are you running? PJ concludes, "I think Matt was just giving them the mickey."

Wait, wasn't it just the other day they were saying Matt was going to run for governor? Or the House of Representatives? But OMG, Matt, are you running??? Tell us!! We're totally more trustworthy than ol' Kimbers!

And oh yeah, by the way -- today's the day the hyphen-Newsom gets officially detached from the name Kimberly Guilfoyle; Kim and Gav's divorce is final as of today. Let us know if you see Gavin staggering into any bars this weekend!

Well, Randy Shaw apparently got the news that the Gavster's strategists are looking into the possibility of running for the Democratic nomination for the gubenatorial race next year. He writes in Beyond Chron:

The prospect of a tossup primary followed by an easy general election victory is no doubt what is motivating the Newsom camp to look closely at the race. The Mayor’s ambitions for higher office have been no secret, and if he passes on the 2006 race he would have to wait until 2010 to move up the political ladder.

By that time both Fabian Nunez and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will have the inside path to both the Senate and Governor’s offices. Politics is all about timing, and Newsom may well conclude that 2006 is the best opportunity he will ever have to make his move.

As pointed out over at the Usual Suspects, it's: "An opinion on where Mayor Newsom is looking. An OPINION, people. Calm down." Still, you just know that fair Gavin want's to be the best San Francisco Mayor ever, and by that, we mean somebody who actually uses the post to move on to higher office. Historical precedent dictates that he'll term out and then become an installation on Phil Matier's show.

In other news, Bloomberg blows air-kisses in Gavin's direction by proxy.
