So far, they've taken to real life versions of N64 games, first with a real life version of Mario Kart on twisty Lombard Street. Sticking with this formula, their new video is also inspired by N64, and will likely resonate with the Peter Pan dudebro set.

"We had a spare afternoon so naturally we decided to recreate Goldeneye on Alcatraz," they write, "Turns out all you need is a couple of GoPros and some nerf guns."

Watch and enjoy for spot-on jokes about the game play — from proximity mines to golden guns — and stay, I guess, for a general idea about the fun you might have if only you had a pair of patterned shorts.

[Ed.Note: Chubbies has not paid SFist for any sort of endorsement, and we are only playing into their hand and posting the video because it is fun and because Alcatraz.]

Game Site Asks if Mass Effect 3 Gay Characters Will Harm 'Traditional Moral Values'">

A recent article from San Francisco tech website Ubergizmo asks if a new game, Mass Effect 3, will hurt traditional moral values. Why? Because the latest installment of the RPG shooter will allow players to opt for same-sex love interests. Via Twitter, Mass Effect 3 executive producer Casey Hudson sent out the following message: “Happy to confirm #ME3 supports wider options for love interests incl. same-sex for m&f chars, reactive to how you interact w/them in-game."

In part of a post that went live on Monday, Ubergizmo's Edwin Kee wrote the following response:

This takes after the footsteps where BioWare’s Dragon Age titles left off, letting players do the same thing. Will Mass Effect [3] result in further erosion of “traditional moral values” as you can play the role of a female Shepard who will hit it big with Kelly when the game ends, although it wasn’t as explicit as what Mass Effect 3 will be. As a parent, what is your take on this?

Sure, he has the right to ask that since gay stuff tends toward the hot topic. Then again, the same could be asked of the game's interracial love or interspecies options. (That is, if they even exist. Does that even exist? We don't know. The last videogame we played involved an animated Italian stereotype chasing mushrooms and stars.) Why not mention that as well, Kee? Or, better yet, ask how having something as natural as gay relationships compares to bloodshed in a game aimed at the teen market.

Minutes after the post went live, the publisher's added the following disclaimer: "We realize that this post can be controversial, and while we let our writers express their opinion, they remain their [sic] personal view on the subject."

Ubergizmo also named the article's accompanying image file "mass-effect-homo." Charming.

Go on, readers. Take Ubergizmo's bait. What do you think of same-sex love in violent video games?

Update: Post has been removed. "If one of our writers wants to share his or her opinion about morality and other topics in life, that person can do it on their own blog, instead of using our site as a platform," writes Ubergizmo's publisher. "We have notified Edwin Kee and asked that he stays within the editorial objective of this site in future posts. We apologize to anyone who was offended by the content of this post."

It's not so cold out there. At least you're not being chased by pissed-off giant insects on a ruined planet that's colder than -cold.

Capcom's Lost Planet: Extreme Condition drops today for Xbox 360, bringing its third-person alien-cappin' happy fun time to y'all.

The game's engine really shines in multi-player mode, when the smoke effects besmirch the battlefield and giant robots lurch out through the murk.

It's a genre game, and a genre game worth your time. You're not there for the storyline -- you're there for the effects, the aesthetics, and the atmosphere. Lost Planet does these things rather well.

The balancing and weight of combat are more deliberate than the average first/third-person shooter, forcing a slower flow of carnage. And with the grappling hook play mechanic, there's quite a bit of creativity that can be realized by a crafty gamer. Within a shooter game, that's a grand addition.

It ain't life-changin', but it's a solid title, and new franchise(!) for Capcom.

- - -

Jun Takeuchi, a producer of the game, will be doing a signing in San Francisco today from 5 to 8 at EB Games, 151 Powell. Wear layers so you won't be complaining about what passes for "cold" here in San Francisco.

There's plenty of coverage all over the place, in particular GameSpot's media blitz and Joystiq's ongoing blog updates, dealing with the horrors of E3 so we don't have to. But what if you're only casually interested in videogames, and you don't care about all the lights and noise and information overload? Well, we cover the internet coverage so you don't have to. Here are our highlights:

Console Wars
Both the Sony Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii were fully unveiled to the public. The general consensus is that Wii won. Nintendo played up its motion-sensing remote controller, which now includes a speaker. Its first-party games such as and Super Mario Galaxy will use the remote to simulate shooting arrows, swinging swords, fishing, and hopping over boss monsters and eating mushrooms.

The PS3, on the other hand, will be extremely expensive and larger and heavier than the original Xbox. Much like the Xbox 360's release, the PS3 will come in two varieties: the outrageous $499 for a stripped down version, and the no-way-you've-got-to-be-kidding $599 for the version that people actually want. The biggest difference between the two versions is hard drive size: 20GB versus 60GB. Also notable is that the 20GB version has no HDMI output, support for other memory cards, or wireless internet.

[] The ESRB claimed that Bethesda and publisher Take-Two Interactive misrepresented the game when presenting it to the ESRB for rating.

At issue is a fan-created mod that supposedly "reveals" or "unlocks" art showing topless nudity on some of the female characters. The board also claims that Bethesda and Take-Two under-represented the amount of violence and gore contained in the game.

Bethesda has responded to the rating change with a statement that the nudity was created by modders and was not available on the release discs, and that they accurately conveyed the level of violence portrayed in the game, down to a 60-page document provided to the ESRB "listing the explicit language, acts, and scenes." They also point out that the game's packaging already has warnings about violence and gore.

It's going to be called "Wii."

Seriously. With a "distinctive ii spelling" that's pronounced like "we," "wee," "oui," and "Wheee!" Early buzz has been somewhat less than favorable. In Nintendo's defense, the company was forced to come up with a distinctive name to compete with another upcoming console, the Sony Deuxdi.

Kotaku has an entry about our state assemblyman, Leland Yee, and his ongoing quest to <del>ride the coattails of the hot-button topic of the moment</del> keep our kids safe from Grand Theft Auto. Yee spoke with a writer for gaming site 1Up.com, defending his position as being in the best interest of kids while still preserving the free speech rights for adults. Hal Halpin of the Interactive Entertainment Merchants Association responded to the article by pointing out that the statistics Yee used while making his argument were inaccurate, and that videogame merchants do just as good a job at policing themselves as movie theaters do.

Last week's Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles was geared toward videogame industry insiders -- sort of an opportunity for game developers and reporters to stand around sniff each others' butts -- but there was plenty of stuff going on that's of interest to casual gamers as well. E3 ain't just for the Xenis and Wils of the world, after all, so we packed up and drove down to LA last week to schmooze with gamey nerds and check out some cool upcoming amusement devices.
