That’s been proven by the Bizerkeley Food Fest, which returns to Berkeley for its fifth annual celebration this Sunday, September 7, from 12-6 pm.

More than 90 food and beverage vendors will cram the North Berkeley BART station parking lot, for a celebration of top vegan chefs from around the country, with food “made by vegans for a meat eater's tastebuds.” That is, many of these dishes are plant-based imitations of meat that will have even the most hardcore carnivores finishing their plate and asking for another.

Last year’s festival was at Berkeley’s MLK Park, which was still not big enough for this growing event. “We exceeded our footprint last year, we had 6,000 people,” festival organizer Erika Hazel, aka the Bizerkeley Vegan, tells SFist. "We filled up every downtown Berkeley parking garage."

Photo by Jeffrey Littman Photography & Lawrence Felix

So why a vegan food festival? “We are the minority,” Hazel says. “I want to bring people together to defeat the stigma that vegan food is for vegans. It’s just really good food. No matter what your diet is, it’s just really great food. Meat eaters are the 99%, so I want to show vegan businesses that you don’t market to vegans, you market to everyone.”

Admission is just $5, but kids 17 and under get in free, and there are upgrades for Express tickets that skip the line ($20), and VIP tickets ($75) get you early entry, cooking demos, and oodles of extra goodies.

We went last year, and this Cambodian pineapple walnut shrimp (plant-based) from Srey Vegan was as good or better than any shrimp we’ve ever had. They’ll be back with it this year, and the festival will also feature El Compa Vegano serving what Hazel describes as “vegan shrimp boil Jack in the Box-esque tacos.” Fungi Foods will have their maitake mushroom burger and “some really bomb mac and cheese," plus their plant-based take on a KFC bowl that they call a “KFV Bowl.”
<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned="" data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DOJadzQETOm/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="14" style=" background:#FFF; Bay Area-based vegan dairy company Miyoko's Creamery is embroiled in a legal fight with its namesake and founder Miyoko Schinner.

Miyoko's Creamery, one of the most popular vegan dairy companies in the country, publicly ousted Schinner earlier this month. According to a corporate press release from February 16, Schinner “exited as CEO and is no longer involved in day-to-day operations.”

However, the Chronicle reported that the Board privately made the decision last summer due to her "numerous performance deficiencies." Schinner reportedly founded the company in 2014, helping it raise more than 85 million to date and bringing its alt-cheeses and butters from a Petaluma production center to more than 20,000 stores nationally, including Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and Walmart.

Now, numerous outlets are reporting that the company has also sued her for breach of contract and theft of intellectual property. According to SFGate, Miyoko’s Creamery filed a civil lawsuit against Schinner the same day, February 16, accusing her of breaching a contract and stealing intellectual property.

One Miyoko’s board member described the conflict as a “battle for the integrity of the company,” according to the Chronicle.

The company alleges she transferred more than 24,000 documents to “a non-company hard drive” after the board of directors reportedly unanimously terminated her as CEO in June 2022, and that an additional 2,900 documents disappeared from company computers.

Schinner has since posted a few times on LinkedIn, responding to the allegations. Regarding her nonpublic demotion last year, she wrote last week, “It is true that I was unwilling to agree to restrictions that would have made any ongoing role I played at this Company ‘for appearances’ only.”

The Chronicle reports that the lawsuit alleges that this dismissal, Schinner remained an employee, but “(i)nstead of facilitating an orderly transition,” she “hatched a plot to steal the Company’s property, trade secrets, and confidential information so that she could create a competing company.”

Schinner maintains that there’s more to it. “I want to let you know that I am not being silent, but searching for the right time to tell my story,” her LinkedIn post from Friday reads.

However, Miyoko Creamery’s complaint reportedly also claims that the company has video surveillance of Schinner and another former employee apparently taking some cheese cultures and unreleased product prototypes from company facilities without authorization. As per the lawsuit, Schinner is accused of not repaying a loan of $112,500 that she had taken from the company

Miyoko Creamery’s current CFO John Blair has stepped into the interim role as CEO while the company searches for a permanent replacement for Schinner, the company has said.

Image via Flickr/Tony Webster under Creative Commons.

Vegan-Friendly Gay4U Opens In Oakland With Instagram-Worthy Meatless Menu

Gay4U, a sister project to the forever closed Hella Vegan Eats that once lived at Oakland's Classic Cars West, recently opened for business inside Oakland’s Garden House.

SF Restaurants, Food & Drink

vegan

Matt

Gay4U, a sister project to the forever closed Hella Vegan Eats that once lived at Oakland's Classic Cars West, opened for business last month inside Oakland’s Garden House, giving Bay Area gastronomes a new assortment of plant-based eats to sink their teeth into.

When the beloved Hella Vegan Eats served its last dish in February — the organic outcome some cutting of ties, both personally and professionally for the restaurant's co-owner, Sofi Espice (who previously identified as Silvi Peligras) — the Bay Area vegan community was left without a left-of-center, quirky, plant-based eatery that both locals and tourists flocked to. Thankfully, Espice was gung ho to carry the torch on elsewhere, prolifically popping up across East Bay at restaurants like Eli’s and Analog.

With the help of a fruitful GoFundMe campaign and the steadfast support of their community, Espice’s Gay4U is currently at Garden House’s Oakland address – which also hosts the Japanese fried fowl and izakaya establishment Aburaya-Go during weekday lunch hours – open and ready to make its chromatic stamp on East Bay's epicurean landscape.

Gay4U’s various menus are an homage to the treats once slung from Hella Vegan Eat’s kitchen. (Think damn good mac-’n’-cheese, meatless burgers, and dairy-free brunch fare.) And while Hella Vegan Eats was by no means synonymized with light calorie counts, Gay4U does, however, aim to be somewhat healthier, adding gut-friendly morsels and nutrient-dense bowled meals to their lunch, brunch, and dinner menus.

<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned="" data-instgrm-permalink="https://www.instagram.com/p/B4236H0hJJH/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=loading" data-instgrm-version="12" style=" background:#FFF;
[Update] According to Food Inspection Reports requested by SFist from the Department of Public Health, Herbivore Earthly Grill isn't doing a remodel just for fun. The restaurant was unfortunately suspended back on the 15th of this month for "repeat vermin activity throughout the facility."

Their permit was reinstated later in the day (not sure if anyone noticed, but it was probably closed for lunch for a serious sanitization effort?) and business as usual continued. But then the vermin were back as soon as the 19th, when the restaurant was issued a 3-day suspension to begin on the 20th for "allowing serious health violations to recur." So, the question is: How long has that "temporary closure" been going on (SFist was only alerted to it today). Is this another closure on top of that one? We'll update if and when we find out more.

...

Vegetarian staple Herbivore's restaurant on Divisadero has, all of a sudden, put up a "Closed For Maintenance" sign. A call to their answering machine yields an equivalent message.

With the relatively recent closure of Source and the departure of Millenium (for Rockridge) a closed sign at a local vegetarian spot in a hot neighborhood — even a purportedly temporary one — was cause for a little concern.

However, SFist spoke to a manager at the Divisadero restaurant who says not to worry. It's a remodel, including cleaning and a new paint job. The latest it will be back open: Friday or Saturday morning.

But, if anything changes with that, we'll update — a call to the health department to confirm this version of events has not yet been returned. And until then, you can always visit Herbivore's locations at 983 Valencia Street (between Liberty and 21st Streets) or in Berkeley at 2451 Shattuck Avenue (between Haste Street and Dwight Way). Problem solved.

Every week in the Bay Area is obviously kale salad week (not to mention bacon beignet week, carne asada week and fried chicken week). But over in Oakland, vegetable love is kicking into high gear with Veg Week, a weeklong celebration of all that is green and good in this world (okay, maybe not all). Starting today and lasting through the weekend, the event is designed to raise awareness about vegetarian eating and encourage veggie choices through workshops, cooking classes, and of course, pop-ups and food trucks.

After last week's Burger Week, we're inclined to embrace a little veggie goodness in our week, and the event makes it easy by partnering with local restaurants to serve special vegetarian dishes in honor of Veg Week. Tonight, you might consider working through your weekend BBQ hangover by celebrating Meatless Monday at a variety of Oakland restaurants. Other events for the veggie-inclined include a Forks Over Knives film screening, cooking classes (we're partial to the one that promises "making delicious falafel, hummus, tzatziki and roasted vegetables for a delicious Mediterranean inspired feast"), and a grand finale celebration at the Lake Merritt Sailboat House on Sunday.

Check out all the Veg Week events here, or consider holding your very own vegetable-centric meal tonight. According to several reputable media outlets, it is Earth Day after all.

Award-winning writer and blogger Laura Beck's latest installment of vegan dishes worth creaming your culinary pants over is back! And we couldn't be happier. On this episode of Three Vegan Dishes, Beck talks about the all-vegetable menu at Atelier Crenn, the dessert selection at Source, and--get this!--the jars of vegan nacho cheese available at Rainbow Grocery.

All About Vegetables tasting menu at Atelier Crenn

Do you have a lot of money and therefore enjoy small portions of fancy-ass food? Well then get to Atelier Crenn and have at it. This is one of those places where you break the bank eating the craziest, freshest, most delicious food that ever was,, and then you get the check and you’re all, "Homey don't play that!" Basically, it’s worth it if you’re the richest, or you’re doing alright financially and really, really love exquisite, exceptional, handcrafted fancy food. It’s not worth it if you're broke like a joke and your food philosophy is, “TWINKIES GIMME.” If you fall into the former category, it’ll be one of the most amazing meals of your life. If you fall into the latter category, please try to change, nobody likes a poor fatty. Kidding, you’re great, now come stand next to us in this photo so we look good comparatively. Also, is it just us, or is Dominique Crenn taking all of her life queues from Ratatouille’s Colette Tatou? Let’s see: They’re both French, they’re both ladies, and they both have rats as sous chefs. What! It’s San Francisco, you think a rat’s not cooking your meal?

Any of the desserts at Source

Vegan Twinkie-like products, Snowball-like products, and Ding Dog-like products. That’s what’s up! Everything is really delicious at Source, but we’re currently obsessed with their desserts. They’ve got some cousins of the Keebler elves working back there, harvesting ingredients from the Delicious tree. There’s something for everyone (who’s not on a diet), from the aforementioned Hostess-like products to Cupcakes, Whoopie Pies, mega cookies, raw balls (don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it!) and Peanut Butter Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats. Walk in, roll out, let’s do this.

Vegan Nacho Cheese at Rainbow Grocery

Vegan nacho cheese is where it’s at. Because while non-vegan nacho cheese is soooo delicious, it’s super terrible for you because it’s made from chemical death. The vegan stuff is just as delicious, and low in fat, as it’s made from healthy shit and love. Lucky for us, Rainbow Grocery just started carrying two kinds of fairly new to the market vegan nacho cheeses. First is Food For Lovers (I KNOW) Vegan Queso, made in Texas, by Texans, who know from queso, and also probably from salsa and getting ropes and shit, too. It’s spicy, cheesy, and perfect over a plate of mega nachos. It tastes just like the stuff you get at movie theaters and you don’t have to pay $50 to see some shitty movie (in 3D) to get at it. The other kind is Nacheez, made kinda-locally in Sacramento. This stuff is perfect heated up and poured over pretty much anything, including broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and our naked chests. Jenny over at Vegansaurus did a taste-off between the two and found them both to be winners and we must agree.

Oh! Speaking of Vegansaurus, be sure to vote them as Best Blog in the VegNews Veggie Awards! And also, for Best Column, vote “Ask Laura” because that’s where we answer your most crucial vegan questions like, “Is sperm vegan?” and, “Is ejaculate vegan?” Fun!

PETA to Use 'Microwaved Baby' Story for Billboard Promoting Veganism

Known for controversial and shocking methods of getting their word across, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) plans on erecting a billboard in Sacramento featuring the image of a perso...

SF News

crime

peta

Sacramento

vegan

Brock Keeling

Known for controversial and shocking methods of getting their word across, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) plans on erecting a billboard in Sacramento featuring the image of a person about to put a pork chop into the microwave next to a picture of a loving mother pig and reads, "Everybody's Somebody's Baby. Go Vegan." WIth an obvious nod to a particularly gruesome story, PETA came up with the tasteless plan after a Sacramento woman was arrested this week for allegedly microwaving her 6-week-old baby to death.

"We're horrified at the thought of microwaving a helpless baby and hope that this billboard will open hearts and minds to the grief of other mothers who have their babies torn away from them simply to satisfy humans' fleeting taste sensations," crocodile tears PETA founder Ingrid E. Newkirk. "All infants, not just our own, deserve protection, and pigs, like cows and other animals, mourn the loss of their young when they are taken away to be eaten."

Ka Yang, 29, of Sacramento was arrested on Tuesday, accused of killing her 6-week-old daughter by putting her in the microwave. Yang was booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail. She is being held without bail.

Three Vegan Dishes Worth (Temporarily) Ditching Meat/Dairy Over

This fairly new coffeeshop in the tenderloin opened to a bit of controversy but is now off on smooth sailing tow...

SF Restaurants, Food & Drink

restaurants

Review

vegan

vegetarian

Brock Keeling

Laura Beck's wildly addictive installment of vegan dishes worth creaming your culinary pants over.

Soyrizo Breakfast Sandwich at Little Bird Coffeehouse - 835 Geary Street (at Larkin)

This fairly new coffeeshop in the tenderloin opened to a bit of controversy but is now off on smooth sailing toward deliciousness. I don't know, it's <s>Friday</s> Thursday, cut me some slack. The Soyrizo Breakfast Sandwich is filled with tofu scramble, melty vegan cheese, and delicious spicy soyrizo on an english muffin and all that's fine and dandy but then they throw that mother in a panini grill and what comes out is a beast. That panini grill must be a cousin of that toaster oven who can talk because there is certainly magic afoot. Again, it's <s>Friday</s> Thursday, lay off.
The Chef's Tasting Menu at Ubuntu - 1140 Main Street

If you're gonna go to Ubuntu, you gotta go big or go home because Executive Chef Aaron London doesn't mess around. You need to roll into town on your golden chariot and kiss your savings goodbye because tonight? Tonight you're THE MAN! Or the whatever you are! Everything from the crazy soups and insane salads to the vegetables prepared in 50 ways and the mind-blowing desserts, you have arrived in the land of vegan gluttony. Weeks after your meal, when you're scrubbing dishes at one of the seven jobs you had to get to pay off the debt, you can think back on it and remember the days when you were so high you could touch the sky. Those were the days.

Southern Comfort Dinner at Millennium - 580 Geary (at Jones)

On Wednesday, May 25th, Millennium goes country! Well, as country as a vegan restaurant in San Francisco can go. Which means, it's country cliches left and right! Previous years feasts have included buckets o' beer, mint juleps, deep-fried everything, wedge salads, a carving station (f'real), and a sundae bar. Not sure what's so southern about that but we love sundaes so we'll let it slide. It's really one of the best nights dining anywhere and by the end of the night, you'll be too fat to walk, and that's definitely a southern thing. Or an awesome thing. It's both things. Logistics: $39.99/person; 5-course Prix Fixe Menu.
Laura Beck's bi-weekly installment of vegan dishes worth creaming your culinary pants over.

Housemade bread or pizza dough at Source, 11 Division (at King), SF

First, let us get this party started by saying that we realize almost everything about recently-opened Source might be or definitely is crazy. Let us also say, we're starting to like it. Normally, when restaurant websites throw around terms like "ancient principals of feng shui" and "ionized air", our brains explode, but at Source, we can dig it. Plus, their housemade buns, pita, and pizza dough are pretty much unbelievable. These guys are as passionate about bread as they are about color therapy. They have a large brick oven (with a dragon facade because duh) and whatever happens in that oven is fucking magic. You know what, we're able to tolerate (and maybe even enjoy? SO SUE US) this multi-dimensional 90's new-age dining thing for a loaf of their ridiculously good bread. Fuck it, we'd listen to Tori Amos until we actually believed we we're fairies if it meant we'd get a slice of pizza. Sad (?) but true.

Final dinner at Soul Cocina

The genius behind Soul Cocina, Roger Feely, is leaving on a jet plane, and we don't think he's coming back again. Like, ever. If you haven't tasted the glory of a vegan feast at Soul Cocina, this Saturday is your last chance. http://dhabawallapopup.eventbrite.com/ The menu is mostly Indian influenced, and all but one dish is vegan. $33 dollars (when you buy ahead online, $37 at the door) gets you more food than you could possibly eat. Go, or you will regret missing this like we regret missing Showgirls when it was originally in theaters. Can you imagine going into Showgirls thinking it might actually be GOOD CINEMA, and then well, seeing Showgirls? Pure joy.

Kasa Indian's Vegan Pop Up Wednesday at The Corner

I know that's hella confusing sounding but stay with us. You see, Kasa is serving a prix fixed menu at The Corner (2199 Mission Street at 18th) every Wednesday through the end of April. Does that make sense? So basically, you show up at The Corner any Wednesday night through April, and you'll be fed an amazing all vegan Indian food menu for $20. The food is insanely good, you get tons of it, and everyone is super nice. It's almost like being at a dinner party, because you'll just start chatting with neighboring tables about shit, and then realize within ten minutes that you have nothing else to say to each other. So, like any other friendship. Anyway, if you want to make it happen, do it NOW, because like all good things, it must end. And with that, GOODBYE AND GOOD LUCK!

Three Vegan Dishes Worth (Temporarily) Ditching Meat/Dairy Over

Laura Beck's bi-weekly installment of vegan dishes worth creaming your culinary pants over.

SF Restaurants, Food & Drink

restaurants

vegan

vegetarian

Brock Keeling

Vegan Grilled Cheese Sandwich at Sacred Wheel Cheese Shop, 4935 Shattuck, Oakland

There's a cheese shop in Oakland that makes vegan grilled cheese sandwiches. We know, crazy. The future is now! On Sunday, the grilled cheese special of the day is vegan and they put all sorts of delicious, whacky shit in it. On top of that, their tomato soup is always vegan and, hello, what's more perfect than a grilled cheese and tomato soup? Maybe Waka Flocka's rock hard abs? Anyway, it's very much amazing so let's support them via compulsive binging.
