This has hit close to home here in California, where Trump has vowed to cut funding to University of California (UC) schools, and even strong-armed UC Berkeley into handing the administration a list of 160 students and professors who had some vague accusations of “antisemitism” against them.

That intimidation campaign ramped up this week, when the White House sent a letter to several universities saying they had to play by Trump’s rules to continue to receive federal grants. These new rules include capping the numbers of international students the schools admit, and pledge that they not “punish” or “belittle” conservative ideas, whatever that means.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, who’s been comically mocking Trump on social media at pretty brazen levels lately, responded with an all-caps tweet tirade that may have been a policy announcement, or it may have been Gavin’s social team just trying to fuck with Trump some more.

IF ANY CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY SIGNS THIS RADICAL AGREEMENT, THEY'LL LOSE BILLIONS IN STATE FUNDING — INCLUDING CAL GRANTS — INSTANTLY.

CALIFORNIA WILL NOT BANKROLL SCHOOLS THAT SELL OUT THEIR STUDENTS, PROFESSORS, RESEARCHERS, AND SURRENDER ACADEMIC FREEDOM. pic.twitter.com/iZhln3rfBM
— Governor Gavin Newsom (@CAgovernor) October 2, 2025

“IF ANY CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY SIGNS THIS RADICAL AGREEMENT, THEY'LL LOSE BILLIONS IN STATE FUNDING — INCLUDING CAL GRANTS — INSTANTLY,” Newsom’s office declared on Twitter Thursday. “CALIFORNIA WILL NOT BANKROLL SCHOOLS THAT SELL OUT THEIR STUDENTS, PROFESSORS, RESEARCHERS, AND SURRENDER ACADEMIC FREEDOM.”

Is Newsom even serious here? The all-caps thing is an obvious Trump troll, and consistent with Newsom’s currently quite frequent tweets insulting Trump.

NEW: Governor Gavin Newsom just responded to Trump’s attempt to get California universities to sign a “loyalty pledge” saying: “CALIFORNIA WILL NOT BANKROLL SCHOOLS THAT SELL OUT THEIR STUDENTS, PROFESSORS, RESEARCHERS, AND SURRENDER ACADEMIC FREEDOM.” pic.twitter.com/0b2CrZUnI2
— Governor Newsom Press Office (@GovPressOffice) October 2, 2025

Apparently Newsom is serious with this threat. The Chronicle got a statement out of Newsom’s spokesperson Izzy Gardon, who confirmed that Newsom would use “multiple mechanisms, including through the budget process” to cut funding for the state’s schools that play ball with Trump. “We’re fully confident in our swift ability to take action should a university bend the knee to Trump,” he added.

We should note that Trump’s letter this week was sent to just nine universities according to CBS News, and USC is the only California university on that list. (The list also includes Vanderbilt, which has raised the possibility of starting a satellite campus in SF). But you could see Trump taking this ploy nationwide if he finds the early results encouraging.

As governor, Newsom does not have the ability to direct what state universities teach. But he does have the ability to control the purse strings on state grants, so yes, cutting funding is something he could do.

The obvious question for universities caught in these dual crosshairs is whether Newsom or Trump has more money on the table for them. The Chronicle reports that the state of California's current budget has $45 billion for college and university funding. Trump had previously yanked $1.3 billion from Columbia and attempted to pull $578 million from UCLA. So yes, Newsom could go toe-to-toe with Trump’s federal government here on funding totals.

There is also a third path for the universities, a path that perhaps not enough schools are taking. Universities can also sue the Trump administration, and those schools that do tend win in court.

Related: UC Wins This Round Against Trump, Judge Reinstates $500 Million in Research Grants That Trump Yanked [SFist]

Image: Royce Hall building on University of California (UCLA) campus in Los Angeles, California, USA - May 28, 2023. He was struck by a car, his aunt confirmed to the San Jose Mercury News. The family was offering a 100,000 reward for information that could lead to Vasquez, ABC7 reported.

Vasquez, 19, was a soccer player at Berkeley and a Marin County native. "We're devastated, such a loss of life," said his aunt, Beth Crestan, "He had such a future ahead of him. It's the worst outcome imaginable."

According to the Daily Trojan, Vasquez left a party at the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity without his wallet and ID. In his unfamiliarity with the area, he told friends he hoped to walk to the beach.

Crespan said that his mother and father identified Vasquez by his clothing and leg brace. She also said the driver who struck Vasquez called police and stayed at the scene.

Behind Enemy Lines

Yes, it's that time of the college football season when those bronzed, militaristic brutes from the University of Spoiled Children come <a href="http://www.calbears.com/sports/m-footbl/sched/cal-m-foo...

Arts & Entertainment

footall

Bay Area Sports

USC

Ted

Yes, it's that time of the college football season when those bronzed, militaristic brutes from the University of Spoiled Children come play our sweet, gentle Cal Bears. L.A. is the place where a former USC architecture student Holly Ashcraft is being accused of murder for placing her newborn in a dumpster on campus in 2005. Part of the defense is that there is no evidence that proves she knew she was pregnant (although a similar set of circumstances appears to have existed in 2004 as well). Needless to say, this whole affair remains controversial.

But it serves to illustrate that you might know somebody who might benefit from the knowledge of the existence of this statewide funded mandate. Just saying.

We understand that it's common for coaches to put their game plans (strategy notes? football-y documents?) in their pants. Behold:

Looks a bit crude, which we like since it almost makes football interesting to us. Marketing imagery aside, congratulations, Stanford, on the upset over the vulgar institution of learning that is USC!

That QB is Daunte Culpepper, Randy Moss' ex-ball chucker. He had a little tryout for the team yesterday and it went so well, he was signed. Which is one way of looking at it. The other way of looking at it is that a deep connection was made between two desperate entities as Culpepper came in overweight and was said to be "spotty" with his passes. Culpepper is a pretty good fit as current Raiders QBs Josh McNown or Andrew Walter kinda suck. He's expected to keep the chair warm until first round draft pick JaMarcus Russell is ready to go.

And speaking of Russell, he's still holding out for more money and the negotiations aren't really going well. The problem seems to be that nobody with the Raiders is in charge of negotiating contracts. Words being thrown around to describe the whole thing include "bizarre" and "embarrassing." Mentioned as people involved include the Raiders Boy <strike>Blunder</strike> Wonder of a coach; finance administrator Marc Badain, the teams lawyer, Jeff Birren, and the new director of football development, Mark Jackson. And while Jackson didn't run a bed-and-breakfast recently, his major accomplishments recently include being the assistant athletic director at USC and working for a boxing organization. The final say, however, as always, is Al Davis who has yet to weigh, probably because he has yet to be defrosted from his cryogenic chamber. We would like to point out too that most teams who have the #1 pick in the draft start negotiating with their pick ahead of time. The Raiders, apparently, did not.

Ironically, the Raiders were rumored to be pursuing Culpepper in the off-season and wanted to trade with the Dolphins to get him, the plan being to sign Culpepper and then make WR draft stud Calvin Johnson their first pick. The plan didn't go through because the Chiefs putzed around with trading Trent Green to the Dolphins and because the Raiders were never sure they could get him, drafted Russell.

Go Raiders.

College Basketball: How Was Your Weekend?

The first weekend of the men's and women's NCAA basketball tournaments is in the books -- are you still alive in <a href="http://www.sfist.com/archives/2007/03/15/college_basketbal...

SF News

basketball

Bay Area

Big Dance

books

Cardinals

college

comedy

Corpus Christi

dance

Final Four

Florida

headlines

history

Islanders

Maryland

Miami

Michigan

Michigan State

NCAA

NCAA basketball

News+Sports

Notre Dame

Ohio State

Ohio State University

Once

Oregon

Bay Area Sports

Stanford

Stanford Cardinal

Tar Heels

tech

Texas

Texas A

Texas Longhorns

the underdog

university

USC

Virginia

Virginia Tech

Washington

Washington State

chris

The first weekend of the men's and women's NCAA basketball tournaments is in the books -- are you still alive in your office pool?
In the men's bracket, as we predicted, the only Bay Area entry, the Stanford Cardinal, slept through the first half of their game with Louisville like it was 8:00 AM World History en route to getting dropped by the Cardinals, 78-58. Meanwhile, the 11-seed Rams of Virginia Commonwealth gored a substandard Duke team, while sweethearts of the Big Dance Winthrop lived up to expectations by rolling Notre Dame like a barrel of lucky charms. All four seven seeds prevailed. Not counting the 8/9 matchups (we don't really count a nine seed beating an eight seed as an upset), there were only two upsets in the entire first round.

It's been tough for the little guys and gals in this year's NCAA basketball tournaments. Sweep the leg, Marist! Photo from Comedy-zone.net.

In the second round, another smattering of high seeds got whacked, but not many. Vanderbilt sewed up a victory over Washington State, and Butler graciously showed Maryland the door. Tennessee volunteered fourth-seeded Virginia for a loss and USC lassoed the Texas Longhorns, but that was about it. Erstwhile second seed Wisconsin is the highest seed to go down thus far and their conquerors, the Runnin' Rebels of UNLV, are the highest remaining seed at #7. Not exactly a banner year for the underdog.

A few high seeds did get pushed, but ultimately prevailed. In the first round, Oregon barely ducked a haymaker from Miami, Wisconsin came back from 18 down to swamp the Islanders of Texas A&M, Corpus Christi, and Virginia Tech had to do the Hokie-Pokie to fight past the 12th-seeded Illini. Over the weekend, defending champs Florida had to work hard to knock back the Boilermakers of Purdue, and the Michigan State Spartans did their best 300 impression before falling to the Tar Heels. Xavier dueled mightily with the Ohio State University, taking the Odens into overtime before succumbing 78-71.

For the record, of the 16 teams remaining, there are four #1 seeds, three #2 seeds, three #3 seeds, and one #4 seed. Three #5 seeds, a #6, and a #7 round out the remainder of the field. Once again, it looks like the powers that be knew what they were doing in setting the postseason matchups.

In the women's bracket, it was more of the same. Traditionally less upset-oriented than their male counterparts, the women's tourney has had some exciting moments thus far, but not many -- only three upsets in the first round.

American Football Spectacular: And A Child Shall Lead Them

When Editor Jon sent a message with the scoop that the Raiders had picked up Kiffin to be the new Head Coach for the Silver And Black, we were excited.

SF News

Christopher Rogers

college

football

Football League

Head Coach

Jacksonville Jaguars

Lane Kiffin

Monte Kiffin

National Football League

NFL

Oakland

Raiders

Rogers

Silver And Black

Bay Area Sports

Tampa Bay

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

USC

SFist Christopher Rogers

Kiffin has shown himself to be one of the most skillful tacticians in the National Football League in his 11 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, helping birth the successful “Tampa 2” zone scheme, and leading his unit to the #1 statistical defensive rank in 2002 and 2005.

There is no dispute about who should be on one sideline in beautiful Glendale, AZ this January 8 to play in the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game. Ohio State (12-0) has handled all comers this year and clearly stands out as the best college football team in the land. But who should they play? Who indeed?

Coming into this past weekend, it looked like the nation was headed for an Ohio State v. USC matchup. The Troy boys had only to beat their crosstown rival UCLA, who came into the game a mortal 6-5 to USC's haughty 10-1. But it was not to be. Apparently grown soft on their success in recent years, USC played like a spot in the BCS championship game was their birthright, and all they had to do was show up and the game was theirs. UCLA wanted the game more and it showed. For their effort, the Trojans backed into the Granddaddy of Them All.

The Southern California condoms will be joined in the Rose Bowl by this year's BCS third wheel, the Michigan Wolverines. The Ann Arbor ankle biters missed out on their chance to play in the national championship game by losing to the Buckeyes earlier this season in Columbus, Ohio. It was a close, exciting, well-played, hard-fought game decided by a last-minute field goal -- hardly a decisive blow in the battle to determine the best team in the country. But when it was all said and done, Ohio State had the game, and Michigan had their chance.

Back to the show.

* San Francisco vs. New Orleans
Sunday, December 3, 2006. 10:00 AM, PST.
Week 13
Battle Of The Resurgent

Last season, both the Saints and the Niners were considered doormat teams. New Orleans did poorly enough to garner the #2 overall pick in the 2006 draft, which became USC's hyper-agile RB Reggie Bush.

As of this wknd, the Saints are atop the NFC South standings, and the Niners... well, they're doing well enough to disappoint by losing games that they should have won. But even games that they should win is an improvement over last season! What a luxury!

So, this year them Saints sure have been doing well under n00b/rookie Head Coach Sean Payton. Their offense has been putting up hilarrrrious numbers.

For example, the net offensive yardage for the Saints' last three games looks like this: 427 @ ATL; 595 vs CIN; 517 @ PIT. Yow.

The Saints have the #1 yards-per-game offense in the league! #1 in passing, too.

With an unheralded offensive line, how're they getting this done with just-had-surgery-on-his-throwing-shoulder-in-the-offseason QB Drew Brees at the controls?

Warriors 117 Kings 105- What's gotten into the Warriors? They've won four in a row and scoring like Leo DiCaprio in his "P----- Posse" days. Leading the way is Baron Davis who is playing out of his head and playing out of his head a lot as Nelson is playing him almost the entire game every game. Considering Baron's off-and-on again relationship with the injured reserve, we're not sure how smart a move that is. Also playing every minute of every game this early in the season is maybe not a smart move either. Anyways, he lead the way with 36 points.

-Not quite as big as the Ohio State/Michigan State "Biggest. Game. Ever" but still pretty big, your Cal Bears go up against mighty USC this weekend. If Cal wins, they might be coming up Rose Bowl. If they don't, they might be coming up Holiday Bowl. Everyone seems to think Cal has a shot because two years they almost beat USC which <does seem="" to="" be="" pushing="" it="">. We almost got a date with a cheerleader once but that doesn't mean we were in the same dating pool as people who date cheerleaders.</does>

Beane sure is lazy when it comes to hiring. They also lost Frank Thomas, fueling rumors of a Bonds signing. We doubt that'll happen but it should be entertaining to say the least.

Story: Paul McQuistan and his twin brother Pat were both chosen in the 2006 NFL Draft, with Paul to your Raiders, and Pat to the Cowboys. Paul went in the third round, and Paul in the seventh. They both play on the offensive line. Hmmm, how would an NFL scout rate one better than the other? What if they'd switched jerseys and not told anyone?!

In any case, Oakland's McQuistan is already making waves in The Raider Nation -- he's already got his own fansite! Paulmcquistanfans.com was alertly noted by Patrick Patterson over on his Thoughts From The Dark Side blog.

And how do they fit?: Another big, raw O-line recruit for Coach Shell to mould.

Outlook: The big redhead will be starting at right guard this Sunday against the Eagles.

Vic-tor-ia!" and a phone number. Pruitt went on to miss both free throws. Now, you might be asking, who is Victoria and why would the Cal fans chant out her name? Well, it turns out that days before, members of the Cal Rally Committee IM'ed Pruitt and pretended to be a UCLA co-ed named Victoria. They even sent fake pictures of "Victoria." After going back and forth, the Cal students hooked, lined, and sinkered Gabe into thinking he was going to get the hook up after the game and so he gave "Victoria" his phone number and, well, that's how he found his phone number not only chanted back at him, but held up on signs during the game.

Pruitt went onto go only 3 for 13 the whole night and Cal went onto win by eleven. While it's hard to say whether or not Pruitt was fazed by all of this, if Cal fans want to go ahead and think they had a hand in it, they certainly have every right to. Cal's team is currently considered to be a "bubble" team and unsure what the Tourney Gods have for them. While Cal's RPI ranking might be not so hot, this stunt should give them a much higher FPO (Fans Punking Opponents) ranking. And if that's not good enough, they should be let in only to see what they could cook up for J.J. Redick.
LIBERTY BOWL
Fresno St vs. Tulsa
Saturday, December 31, 2005

Fresno has been all slumpy since nearly upsetting USC in a monstrous toe-to-toe battle. Tulsa used to be in the same conference with Fresno and is on the way up, winning their first league championship in 20 years by taking Conference USA from UTEP.

Tulsa's mascot is the "Golden Hurricane." That's considerable more serious than a simple Golden Shower. Who OKs these mascot names? It just makes us gloomy to ponder.

I love Tulsa's tight end Garrett Mills, he's like 80% of their offense. (And he just broke the NCAA 1-A record for TE receiving yards in a single season.)

Sponsorship: The Liberty Bowl is sponsored by AutoZone. Their company name might also be used for a 1970s paperback sci-fi novel. "To win your freedom, you must pass through the AutoZone!"

HOUSTON BOWL
(14) TCU vs. Iowa St.
Saturday, December 31, 2005

TCU would probably be playing after New Year's Day if they hadn't lost to an unranked SMU. Doh. So here they are in the Houston Bowl, which is Texas. And Texas means fightin'!

This game will be held in the NFL Houston Texans' Reliant Stadium. No one would be shocked if this bowl game outdrew a Texans game.

MC Fried Chicken's take: TCU should win. They have a hot QB and should take out Iowa St.

Sponsorship: EV1.net. A who-da-what? Upon further review, EV1.net is an ISP from Houston. Perhaps you're even using them right now.

But we can say that the overwhelming relief eschewed by other previewers is, thank the maker, pretty much appropriate. (Although one attendee wrote to us later, "Not my cuppa tea. At least 80% of the effects looked stunning and I appreciated watching it from a purely visual standpoint. However, I am an old romantic at heart and I can't resist a good love story. Anakin and Padme, whose passionate strength is meant to provide the crux of the whole Star Wars series, were about as romantic as couple of damp squibs. I wanted to see their lust, their craving, their desire, you know, like Romeo and Juliette or something. Instead, we had to make do with them merely telling us how they felt.")
