Can't they get a break?

It seems that today's hazardous material spill snafu was due to a leaking drum at a Bayview-Hunter's Point city corporation yard. The spill "prompted a shelter in place warning." That tis to say, it's time time to go inside, close doors and windows, turn off air conditioning or heating systems, and flip on the radio or TV for further info if you're near 2121 Evans Street.

According to CBS 5, at 11 a..m. today "[w]orkers in the area reported suffering headaches after the leak began, and ambulances responded." A hazmat team was called in to investigate to toxic spill. (Wonder if any -ish showers had to be administered? We could really use one of those. They must do wonders for the skin.)

We came across these, um, public art pieces while walking down Stillman Street. Shot earlier this evening, the paint was fresh yet gooey. If we had to guess, one to two days old, maybe? What these images lack in whimsical mischief--like last November's bout of graffiti that marred a Los Gatos church, which somehow made Bay Area headlines--they make up for in fear and fright.

Anyway, we're curious: what exactly does "Ø.F.C." mean? According to neighbors in the area, this acronym, along with the classic swastika, have made appearances on the stairwell walls of residential apartment buildings on Stillman Street over the last six months, but they're also stumped as to the meaning of "Ø.F.C."

But wait, there's more: for even more Neo-Naziesque hate signage in SOMA, including a misguided tribute to Vacaville, follow the jump.

Come Help BART Give Away Free Fair Trade Coffee!

Come volunteer to give away free espresso to support fair trade

misc

BART

berkeley

civic center

coffee

espresso

fair trade

Jim Herd

Oakland

THANK YOU

TransFair USA

tully's

USA

Jim

Mark your calendar: January 31, 6:00 to 9:00 AM, at the more stations, like Embarcadero, Powell, Montgomery, and Civic Center, and maybe even a station in Oakland and Berkeley. Bene.
Shooting number-one occurred around 9:15 p.m. at Sahib Indian Restaurant, "located at 12221 San Pablo Ave." According to CBS 5, via Bay City News, two men walked into the restaurant and began shooting the employees. "One victim was pronounced dead at the scene and the second victim was airlifted to an area hospital where he later died."

Then, shooting number-two: a little after 9:45 p.m., according to the same report, "police responded to reports of a man down in the 300 block of South 38th Street." An unidentified male took a shot to his head, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. No arrests have been made in either shooting as of now.

And, well, that seems to be all for now. It's been reportedly quiet here in SF. A little too quiet, as they say.
Jennifer Gooch's site One Cold Hand reunites missing single gloves with their owners. Yay! Since her site opened in March of this year, her finds have spiked considerably since winter began last month. And so has her press coverage: the New York Times, USA Today, and the Associated Press, to name just a few, have all picked up on OCH so far. The AP article notes that Gooch's first glove was "was a moist, lambskin glove that someone had propped up on a ledge on campus." (We're not exactly sure why, but: ew.)

Although not many of her found gloves have reunited with their other halves, Jennifer says that "[i]t's kind of whimsical and bittersweet ... it makes you feel there's this opportunity for benevolence." Well then, That said, it should come as no surprise to you that the Gooch is also a graduate student in the Carnegie Mellon University School of Art.

Sadly, her site -- which wonderfully breaks down single, lost gloves into categories like "leather," "left," "mixed materials," "ambidextrous," "synthetic," and so on -- isn't available in SF or the Bay Area. Not sure we're the glove-wearing kind of city that is Pittsburgh, but still, we personally lose several pairs of gloves during the winter season. Something like this would be nice to have around these parts. Alas. (Look at that, it is bittersweet!)

Bernal Heights Burrowing Owl In Danger?

We got word today from an anonymous source that two residents of Bernal Heights -- including a former President of Golden Gate Audubon Society -- spotte...

SF News

animals

Audubon Society

baby

bernal heights

Canada

cats

City

City Attorney

construction

Environment

Florida

Golden Gate

Heights

love

Mayor

owl

San Francisco

sf

Tom Ammiano

USA

Brock Keeling

We got word today from an anonymous source that two residents of Bernal Heights -- including a former President of Golden Gate Audubon Society -- spotted a burrowing owl a block from their house on the southeastern side of the hill. The (sub?)species was confirmed by another Audubon-er.

So, why does this matter? Because at the moment there is construction going on in the same area (i.e., landscaping improvements such as steps, etcetera) where the owl is kicking it. According to Wikipedia, for what it's worth, "[t]he burrowing owl is endangered in Canada, threatened in Mexico, and a species of special concern in Florida and most of the western USA." ("Species of special concern." Aw.) Burrowing owls usually live in ground squirrel holes, according to our source, but so far the bird has been reported up on the Hill, in a tree for the last couple of days.

We talked to the former Audubon president today about the birdie finding, and the Bernal resident wants to know more. To find out if an environmental-impact report was done on the area before current construction, they tried calling the Mayor's office, 311, Tom Ammiano's office, and the City Attorney's office. So far, no one has returned any calls. They also discussed the issue with various fish and game associations, with not much luck there either.

If any of you have further info, we're sure that she (as well as the GG Audubon Society) would love to hear from you, readers. (Also, no little baby kittens better get hurt with this construction, damnit! Kitty cats = sheer darlingness.)

The Warriors: 2007-2008 Season Preview- Part One

The Warriors season starts up tonight and in honor of the return of basketball, SFist Chris takes a look at the Warriors.

SF News

Al Harrington

Angeles

basketball

Clippers

Dallas

Don Nelson

Ike Diogu

Los

Los Angeles

Los Angeles Clippers

Mike Dunleavy

robbery

sf

SFist Chris

Bay Area Sports

Stephen Jackson

The Warriors

Troy

Troy Murphy

USA

usa today

Warrior Nation

Warriors

Jon

What a difference a year makes. Come opening night of 2006, most of Warrior Nation was just hoping that the newly unretired and rehired Don Nelson could somehow resuscitate the franchise from its 12-year playoff coma. A .500 season was all anybody really hoped for; few dared dream the impossible dream of postseason play.

After starting fast and then fading, the Warriors pulled off a master stroke of highway robbery on January 17 when they unloaded franchise goats Mike Dunleavy, Troy Murphy, and Ike Diogu to some rubes in overalls and straw hats in Indianapolis for starters Stephen Jackson and Al Harrington. After some gettin'-to-know-you time, the club finished the season ablaze, going 16-4 down the stretch to pluck the eighth and final playoff spot from the Los Angeles Clippers.

And then there was the opening round series with Dallas. Ahhggghhh, sweet playoff upset. The Warriors absolutely owned the Mavs, and oh it felt so good. 2006-2007 season: Mission accomplished.
