Poor BVHP. Can't they get a break? It seems that today's hazardous material spill snafu was due to a leaking drum at a Bayview-Hunter's Point city corporation yard. The spill "prompted a shelter in place warning." That tis to say, it's time time to go inside, close doors and windows, turn off air conditioning or heating systems, and flip on the radio or TV for further info if you're near 2121 Evans Street. According......

Well, this was unnerving. We came across these, um, public art pieces while walking down Stillman Street. Shot earlier this evening, the paint was fresh yet gooey. If we had to guess, one to two days old, maybe? What these images lack in whimsical mischief--like last November's bout of graffiti that marred a Los Gatos church, which somehow made Bay Area headlines--they make up for in fear and fright. Anyway, we're curious: what exactly......

Two separate shootings in the city of Richmond took the lives of three men on Thursday night. Shooting number-one occurred around 9:15 p.m. at Sahib Indian Restaurant, "located at 12221 San Pablo Ave." According to CBS 5, via Bay City News, two men walked into the restaurant and began shooting the employees. "One victim was pronounced dead at the scene and the second victim was airlifted to an area hospital where he later died."......

A few hours later after a car hit a man at the same intersection in Portola, a Muni bus stuck and killed a pedestrian on Thursday night at around 8:30 p.m. The 9X killed a woman in her 30s at San Bruno Avenue and Bacon Street. According to CBS 5 (via Bay City News), "details of the incident were unclear. Muni spokesman Alan Siegel confirmed the accident occurred but said he wouldn't comment on......

A two-alarm fire at Bernal Heights home caused the displacement of two elderly folks. The blaze happened at 266 Nevada Street around 6:30 p.m. this evening. According to the Gate, "[f]irefighters found the home's two residents inside and brought them out to safety." Aw. Our heroes! Anyway, other than one of the rescued Bernal residents suffering from breathing trouble -- who was hospitalized for a short period of time -- no other injuries were......

Oh this is a smashing idea. Jennifer Gooch's site One Cold Hand reunites missing single gloves with their owners. Yay! Since her site opened in March of this year, her finds have spiked considerably since winter began last month. And so has her press coverage: the New York Times, USA Today, and the Associated Press, to name just a few, have all picked up on OCH so far. The AP article notes that Gooch's......

We got word today from an anonymous source that two residents of Bernal Heights -- including a former President of Golden Gate Audubon Society -- spotted a burrowing owl a block from their house on the southeastern side of the hill. The (sub?)species was confirmed by another Audubon-er. So, why does this matter? Because at the moment there is construction going on in the same area (i.e., landscaping improvements such as steps, etcetera) where......

Found Magazine's inexhaustible founders, Davy and Peter Rothbart, will be at Berkeley's Pegasus Books tonight and at SF's The Dark Room on Thursday night for Found's "There Goes the Neighborhood Tour 2007." We're excited to see what's in Davy's trunk of "sparkling, brand-new finds" and be privy to Peter's songs based on notes from Found #5, aka "The Crime Issue." We've mentioned before that the only "Law & Order" we watch is "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," and the main reason for that is our imaginary boyfriend Vincent D'Onofrio is on it. So you can imagine we were a little worried when the fate of the show was up in the air at the end of last season. It had something to do with the franchise not pulling in the numbers it used to,......

We were out for a leisurely weekend walk up to Tower Market from our abode in the Sunnyside. Instead of heading straight up Teresita, we decided to do something a little different and detour onto Marietta Drive. ‘Tis true, we live life on the edge. While cruising down this precious, semi-hidden lane, we happened upon an open house for 401 Marietta Drive. Despite our sweats and sneakers, we decided to go ahead and horrify......

Not to be outdone by San Francisco's own zip code fibbing person of the people, Green Party follower and Berkeley Rent Stabilization Board member Chris Kavanagh, according to today's Matier and Ross, "was hauled out of an Oakland coffee shop [Cole's Coffee Shop] in handcuffs today" and thrown in the clink on fraud charges for lying about his Berkeley residence. It seems that he actually lived on 63rd Street in Oakland, where he was......

Try drowning Dave Eggers, Michelle Tea, Stephen Elliott, Beth Lisick, Barb Bersche, Eileen Hassi, or 826 Program Director Erin Neeley, via a dunking booth, this Sunday afternoon at the first 8/26 Day Festival. The literary bash will feature live performances, cartooning, Everett Middle School's dance troupe, readings, local writers (pardon me, novelists), paper flower making, haiku writing, bon mots flying to and fro, and much, much, much more. The festivities go from 1 p.m.......

Forget that Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, and Chris Cooper star in The Kingdom. The divine Jason Bateman also appears -- reason enough to check out this action flick. IMDB tells us that it's about "a team of U.S. government agents...sent to investigate the bombing of an American facility in the Middle East." But seeing as how it's an action release, The Kingdom is bound to be riddled with explosions, the word "fuck," and tons......

Although the billionaire hotelier once allegedly (the help is never a reliable source) uttered the words "only the little people pay taxes," Leona Helmsley today paid her biggest tax bill of all, breathing her last breathe in Greenwich, Connecticut. One has to hand it to Helmsley for making it all the way to the age of 87. She had a rough time of it in the late '80s with all that tax evasion, employee......

We found Thomas Swick's traveling-abroad tips in this Sunday's Chronicle both cute and informative. But since we're stricken with a crippling fear of any existence east of (the) 5, we were left starving for a few answers as to why. Such as: -- In Japan, don't blow your nose. -- In Spain, don't pick up your paper napkin if you drop it at the bar. -- In Vatican City, don't correct the pope. (Impossible.)......

...but then again, neither does the engine! Ha ha ha! Just kidding of course; Muni does a fantastic job. Really, top-notch service. Never a single complaint. Updated with picture from SFist reader Oscar. Thanks, Oscar. Here's the Google Street View picture of the house. This is an SFist News Flash: a tipster reports that there's a house fire going on right now in Twin Peaks. The phrase "up in flames surprisingly quickly" was used to describe the situation. Oh noes! We always thought that a story regarding an organization called "welovejam.com" would be NSFW. But this is actually pretty innocent. These two fellows, Eric Haeberli and Phineas Hoang, started an operation in the Santa Clara Valley with a very simple concept. See, there's apricot called the Blenheim that's been proclaimed to be endangered by Slow Food USA. It's very fragile. Haeberli and Hoang are trying to preserve this flavor in the form of preserves. Jam. They make the Blenheim into jam. ...
