Just a preface of what will happen in the city next month, San Francisco will be the focus of a major protest since it's the only US city hosting the Olympic torch relay in the 2008 Beijing games.

According to CBS 5, the decent-sized group held banners on the steps of City Hall reading "Olympics in China, Torture in Tibet," and "Truth is our only weapon." Over at sftorch2008.org, it notes that a larger rally will be planned for April 9 when the torch finally makes its way here.

The Chinese government is running the Olympic torch around the world, hoping to win the approval of the global public and cover up its brutal occupation of Tibet and abysmal human rights record. When the torch relay reaches San Francisco on April 9th, China will be in the global spotlight like never before. We have an unprecedented opportunity to shine this spotlight on Tibet.

China's occupation of Tibet is a hearted issue -- even though China has maintained that it has "ruled Tibet for centuries" -- especially here in the Bay Area and on you more liberal college campuses. Next month's protest during the torch's arrival is expected to draw thousands.

SFist Finds: VJJ

We found ourselves asking ourselves lots of questions when we decided to post this piece of urban art that SFist reader Mike found on the corner of <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&hl=en&geoco...

misc

Bay Area

Flickr

found

Georgia O

graffiti

nsfw

US

vagina

Leanne Maxwell

Then we found ourselves thinking, what if this were just another penis drawing -- we probably wouldn't even bother posting it. Penis drawings are a dime a dozen, but vagina drawings such as this are real <del>pearls</del> diamonds in the rough.

We're thankful to Flickr user Lulu Vision for giving us a heads-up in the SFist Contribute section regarding tonight's Lower Polk Neighbors meeting with SF Fire Department Chief Joanne Hayes-White about Fire Station 3 and how they're trying to make us all go deaf with their sirens. Hilariously enough, this fire station is located right next to Diva's and Grass Roots. Why would they ever want to leave?

From the flyer:

The current building boom that is taking place in SF Central City area at this very moment will add several thousands of new dwellings to the service area of Fire Station 3 -- already the busiest in the nation*. Due to the development and the practice of dispatching a fire truck and an ambulance on every medical call (near 100,000 annually), a significant increase in the already hourly around-the-clock noise from 140-decibel air horns and sirens is to be expected unless effective measures are put in place by the SF Fire Department to reduce the noise.

* source: San Francisco Fire Department -- statistics

We live just a few blocks from this fire station, and we can attest to the ear-piercing decibel of those sirens. We nearly had a heart attack when we first moved to the neighborhood and were awakened at 4 a.m. (Now we just have a white noise machine in the room, much in part to filter out the drunk Academy of Art students.)

If anyone out there is going to the meeting, please let us know how it went in the comments!

The Battle of Algiers (La Battaglia di Algeri) (1966): We were going to start throwing shade at the overall ineffectiveness of political satire -- which, by the way, The Battle of Algiers is not -- but instead we this interesting tidbit about this classic regarding Algeria's struggle to overthrow French Colonial Government in the mid-1950s. According to IMDB: "In 2003, the New York Times reported that the Pentagon screened this film for officers and civilian experts who were discussing the challenges faced by the US military forces in Iraq. (Read more about it here.)
