As you realize, downtown SF is struggling with a massive office vacancy problem, something her rivals in the mayor’s race can surely capitalize upon.

“Bringing students into the heart of San Francisco affords a set of remarkable opportunities,” Breed said in that letter, effectively pleading for UC to be a white knight for the SF office vacancy issue. Breed went on in the letter to hype SF as “a vibrant and world class metropolitan center, and could also serve to alleviate some of your critical student housing shortfalls at both UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco.”

Bringing a University like UC to our Downtown is a win-win. NBC Bay Area reports that UC is actually considering the idea. Breed celebrated with a Saturday morning tweet of the Chronicle’s reporting on the matter, and a link to her “Roadmap to San Francisco's Future,” which makes absolutely no mention of a new UC campus.

And there’s probably good reason for there to be no mention of this, considering there is nothing definite planned yet. But the Chronicle got some vague statements out of the UC Office of the President, which said the UC system is “exploring opportunities to advance their research, public service, and education mission through an expanded presence in San Francisco.”

Moreover, UC Berkeley spokesperson Dan Mogulof told the Chronicle last week that the school was “always interested in options that are viable” for additional graduate-level housing. And he adds they're having “exploratory discussions” with the city over “potentially buildings for academic purposes.”

“The only thing that’s not on the table for us is undergraduate housing in San Francisco,” Mogulof added.

Again, there are no specific buildings or properties mentioned in on-the-record comments by SF or UC officials. But the Chronicle does float the idea of a conversion of the former Westfield Centre mall, which has been surrendered to its lenders and is becoming a high-profile vacancy magnet.

The UC system, which consists of UC Berkeley and nine other schools statewide, already operates the College of Law in San Francisco (formerly UC Hastings), UCSF’s schools and medical centers, and a campus extension at 160 Spear Street. Last year, the school also opened an SF student housing complex at 198 McAllister Street.

Related: UC Law SF To Open 656-Unit Student Housing Complex in the Tenderloin This Summer [SFist]

Image: UC Law SF

UC, Cal State & Other Colleges Tell Undocumented Students Abroad To Come Home Before Inauguration

The Chancellor of the California State University system sent a letter advising administrators at 23 of its campuses to warn their DACA recipients studying abroad that it was "highly likely" their imm...

SF News

cal state

donald trump

election 2016

immigration

uc

uc berkeley

Jay Barmann

University officials around the country, including those in California, are urging students living abroad who have DACA residency status as the children of immigrants that they should return to the U.S. before the inauguration in January, after which it is unclear how easy it will be for them to get back into the country. The Mercury News got word of a letter from the Office of the Chancellor of the California State University system advising administrators at 23 of its campuses to warn their DACA recipients studying abroad that it was "highly likely" their immigration status would be questioned by border security after January 20.

A spokesperson for the UC system's Office of the President also confirmed that UC advisors in the Education Abroad Program are working with their students who are not full US citizens to figure out their plans as well, according to the Merc.

The LA Times reported on the story as well, speaking to immigration law expert and associate clinical professor of law at the Santa Clara University Lynette Parker, who says, "We want to make sure that students are aware of the risks. We want to be on the cautious side and want to make sure that we're warning persons that we don't know what's going to happen."

Over 200 college and university presidents nationwide have signed an open letter to President-Elect Trump calling for him to uphold the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program, which was established in 2012 to allow the children of undocumented immigrants, born elsewhere but residing in the country for at least five years before the age of 16, to remain in the US legally and pursue citizenship under the DREAM Act. "America needs talent," the letter states, "and these students, who have been raised and educated in the United States, are already part of our national community. They represent what is best about America, and as scholars and leaders they are essential to the future."

In addition to UC and Cal State presidents, leaders of the University of San Francisco, Santa Clara University, Mills College, and Pomona College have all signed the letter, as the SF Business Times notes.

In a This American Life segment following the election, reporter Zoe Chace spoke with New York-based immigration attorney Cheryl David, who believes that people who already have residency status under the Dream Act will likely not lose that status, but the Trump Administration will likely cease taking new applications and those whose applications are in process are probably at risk. She also believes that enforcement by ICE is going to be different depending on what part of the country you're in. "We won't know until they start arresting people," says David's associate Lindsey Gauzza. "You're going to have advocates in San Francisco saying 'It's happening like this,' Atlanta's going to have a different scenario. New York, who knows."

To combat this, the SF Public Defender's Office has proposed a $5 million fund to be set up dedicated solely to fighting deportation cases here.

For students who grew up in California but still don't have permanent residency status, it remains all up in the air.

Janet Napolitano, who has led the Department of Homeland Security for the Obama administration since 2009, will leave her post to become the first female director of the University of California system.

Sherry Lansing, the regent and film executive who headed the UC system's search committee for the position, told The Los Angeles Times that while Napolitano's dearth of educational experience may make her an "unconventional choice" for some, the secretary is "the right person" for the job.

"She will bring fresh eyes and a new sensibility—not only to UC, but to all of California," Lansing said. Also: money. In an era of tightening budgets, a former Cabinet member is the ideal choice for squeezing cash out of the federal government.

Napolitano's salary has not been announced, but she currently makes $200,000. Mark Yudof, the man she is replacing to oversee UC's 230,000 students, 191,000 faculty, and $24 billion budget, makes $591,000.

Napolitano, who will start her post at UC in September, called working with the Obama administration a "privilege." The president said in a statement, “The American people are safer and more secure thanks to Janet’s leadership in protecting our homeland against terrorist attacks."

Fee Increase Protest Prompts UCLA Students to Take Over Building

During a UC Regents meeting, students reportedly "stormed" and "took over" a building at UCLA on Wednesday. <a hre...

SF News

uc

uc berkeley

UCLA

university of california

Brock Keeling

A total of 12 students, the Daily Cal reports, were arrested.

As for today, a few students and faculty are still protesting outside the UC Office of the President.

Aside from a freshly-packed bong and high-sodium meals, college students love nothing more than to protest something bad. The most recent something bad to move the UC system to protest is, of course, the severe budget cuts affecting the quality of education. But this protest will be done walkout-style. According to SF Chronicle, "What began in recent weeks as a proposed faculty walkout coinciding with the first day of school next Thursday at some campuses - including UCSF, UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz - has grown to include graduate and undergraduate student groups, and labor unions representing thousands of employees." Combine the recent budget cuts and forced furlough days with the fee increase and we will (hopefully) see an explosive mass walkout of indignation and righteousness. In related news, everybody else is poor and/or losing their jobs too.

Another Vehicle Falls Victim to Arson

You want another car fire? This time the Berkeley City Council voted last night that they it "will not seek a stay of a judge's order allowing UC Berkeley's athletic center project to proceed," according to CBS 5. Good. Also, many of the protesters, who awesomely are starting to view themselves as Christ-like figures as of late, held a small rally outside Berkeley City Hall last night. And this is our favorite quote from one of the pro-oak grovists:

The court system was set up for the rich and wealthy, and it's up to us now, the people on the ground! We do have the power! That is why the trees are still standing! It's because of human beings who sleep there, and stay there day and night.

OK, sure. The court system was "set up for the rich and wealthy." We'll give you that only because we watch a lot of Law & Order: SVU. And we really have no idea what we're talking about. But we doubt any (lucid) poor person gives a crap about some oak trees on the UC Berkeley campus.

In other news, the trees along Third and Harrison streets are scheduled for demolition soon. Any guesses on when we'll see media-whore/"activists" Dumpster Muffin climbing those leafy gifts from God? (Hint: never)

What else is new, right? But in the end, the protesters have no one to blame but themselves. The twee aesthetics the sitters used to save said trees turned off any fence sitters, and "Dumpster Muffin"'s dilettante-ish and affected temper tantrum earlier this month made some supporters eyes roll. But what the Save the Memorial Oak Grove did accomplished was having fun. They turned lemons into a festive, extended tree-fort playdate. Kudos, guys! But if any of you still want those oak trees to remain standing, there will be an Oak Grove Supporters Plan March at Berkeley City Hall tomorrow. According to university spokesperson Dan Mogulof, the protester came along "very quietly."

Yesterday, as you may recall, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Barbara Miller issued a split ruling of sorts that halted the oak grove demolition until the university can prove how the project will sufficiently deal with noise and traffic during its construction.

It seems a judge halted the plans until "the university can prove the project would not violate state earthquake-safety laws, a judge ruled Wednesday," says the Gate. The university, though, thinks it's a rule in their favor, keeping "their plan alive, arguing that the center would not violate state law because it would not touch any fault lines."

But the tree-sitters, who have been nesting in the oaks since last year, are thrilled:

"We are ecstatic," said Stephan Volker, attorney for the California Oak Foundation, which sued the university two years ago. "We believe this project is now dead." The city of Berkeley and a group of neighbors living near the stadium also filed lawsuits to block the project.

Oddly enough, Dumpster Muffin's crying fit atop one of the trees yesterday afternoon -- as if daddy were taking away her AmEx -- did not manage to get her forcefully pulled from the oak. (What's more, her non-baptismal name is currently our favorite among the tree squatters.)

In the end, though, the ruling will most likely favor the university. Presumably they just need to wait until the last activist scurries out of the grive, and then they'll bring in the chainsaws. Stay tuned.

UC/Berkeley Uses Force to Oust Tree-Sitters

The battle to save an oak grove on the UC-Berkeley campus turned even uglier yesterday. Protesters sang bizarre Native American-ish sounding songs (seriously, check this out) and threw buckets of urine at police and arborists (where "an acrid tang hung in the air afterward." Ew.)

One female tree-sitter was forcibly and understandably removed and placed into custody after she bit an arborist. Millipede, as she now goes by, was arrested and might possible be booked on for assaulting a police officer. Check out footage of her throwing a major temper tantrum as she's yanked from the mighty oak by police officers.

According to the Save the Oaks site, they would like you to "do whatever you can to save the Oak Grove, no matter what the 'Court' says. Come to the Grove! Bring your friends and help us stop any attempt to extract tree sitters and tear down our Trees!” Chortle.

As of now there remains anywhere from 8 to twelve protesters sitting in the trees. No word yet as to how the university plans on removing them all. But stay tuned. According to UCB officials, the tree protesters might have to come down as early as today, Tuesday, or be removed by the long arm of the law. Literally.

Save the Oaks spokesman Doug Buckwald, he received an urgent call on an "emergency phone network" (wait, you mean, a cell phone?), saying, "they are coming in to get them right now." This might be the end of the tree huggers, people we assumed came down a long time ago. Alas. Stay tuned.

More than 400 students were quickly evacuated from their dorm rooms last night after a n anonymous tipster called the police about the explosive materials. Woods, now facing two felony charges, including possessing explosives to make a bomb, meant no harm, according to his roommate:

Woods' roommate Robert Chao says that Woods wasn't plotting to do harm to anyone. "He had no intention of blowing anything up. He had no ill intentions as a person. That's not him."

Poor kid. We'd normally rail against him for acting so foolish, but seeing as how there's little to do in Davis aside from huffing glue and giving cows makeovers, we feel bad for Woods. But only a little. Anyway, goes on to report that "[a]uthorities believe it was an isolated incident and said there was no need to detonate any devices." And the evacuated students? They pulled "couches together in the dining hall and passed the time with movies." Ah, the college life.

*FILM: The 5th Annual San Francisco Irish Film Festival kicks things off with by director Lenny Abrahamson and writer Mark O’Halloran. This is followed by a reception with the Consul General of Ireland, Emer Deane. According to LS, "other highlights include Speed Dating, a romantic comedy about a lovelorn amnesiac; the award winning Irish-language feature film Kings, and finally The Undertaking, a documentary about Irish American undertaker and poet Thomas Lynch, who is famed as the inspiration for hit HBO series Six Feet Under.
LECTURE: Yeah, yeah, you can go listen to Greil Marcus prattle on endlessly about the Magnetic Fields and the outback, or whatever, later this month at teh JCCSF. Or better yet, you can hear Family Ties creator Gary Goldberg talk about what it was like working with Michale J. Fox (his second choice to play Alex P. Keaton), Stephen Spielberg (who Goldberg tried to talk out of doing E.T.), on the set of Spin City, and more. He speaks tonight at the Jewish Community center of San Francisco. (Also, according to IMDB, he doesn't own a computer. The hell?)

DANCE: While the members of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater probably can't bust out "Turkey Lurkey Time" to save their lives, they're still not half bad.
