U2 was the headliner for Dreamforce's big central concert event Wednesday night at the Cow Palace, and Bono took the opportunity to have a conversation of sorts with a video projection of Donald Trump clips.

Exasperated as many of us are that the big orange monster has gotten this far in this election, Bono decried Trump's oft-stated plans for a "great, great wall" on our southern border — which, interestingly, he hasn't mentioned in a while! — and shouted, "Good people are not gonna stay silent while you run off with the American dream. Alright, candidate? You hear me, candidate? You’re fired!”

As CBS 5 reports, Bono staged a similar interlude using clips of Trump at a Las Vegas music festival last month during the band's performance of "Desire."

On Charlie Rose, Bono previously criticized Trump saying, "I don’t think he’s a Republican. I think he’s hijacked the party, and I think he’s trying to hijack the idea of America. And I think it’s bigger than all of us. I think this is really dangerous… Wise people of conscience should not let this man turn your country into a casino."

2. Enchanted - Soundtrack: We are thinking that the only song on this album that's worth listening to is Jon McLaughlin's "So Close." We've seen him twice in concert and each time he's been nothing but stellar. We think we'll just download that one song.

3. U2 - Joshua Tree (Remastered): Nothing much that we can add to this, except if you don't own this masterfully crafted 80's album, then go buy the remastered version. For old and new fans alike, U2 re-releases one of our favorite albums. Ever.

4. Six Organs of Admittance - Shelter from the Ash: iTunes classifies Six Organs of Admittance as "freak folk." You laugh, but it's true. We have to agree with them on that. It seems that you have to be in the right mood to venture into the mind of Ben Chasney. Check out their free show at Amoeba in Berkeley on Thursday, December 6th. (Listen to: "Jade Like Wine.")

We rolled in right as the last opening act, Simon Dawes, was finishing their sound check (only about 10 minutes behind schedule), and found their Weezer-sounding set pleasant.

Annuals (the Noise Pop site specifically says not to refer to them as "The" Annuals) are a ginormous group with grandiose instrumentation -- a sextet where the one woman wears a country dress and plays piano, that kind of band. They've got a very polished sound that reminded us of U2 (in a folk/synth kind of way), oddly enough, and we see them being featured on Aaron Axelson's Live 105 Soundcheck show very soon (if they haven't been already).

Update: Oh wait, we just checked and they were indeed featured on Soundcheck last week -- but unfortunately, they're listed as "The Annual" on the Live 105 site. Annuals can't be too happy about that.

SFist Answers: Bono & Sickness

It's time for SFist Answers...

misc

A HREF

AskSFist

bus

downtown

friends

live show

people

plane

San Francisco

SFist Answers

sfistanswers

Spotlight

The Edge

the onion

train

u2

SFist Christopher Rogers

Please, for your sake, send Questions you want Answered to sfistanswers@gmail.com, and we will do our best to provide.
Ahh, here we are:

Q:

A: It certainly would make sense to us if tourist locations have higher bug rates, Jordan.

Think of it; all those travelin' people spend extended time periods in various travelin' metal cans (plane/shuttle/train/bus/car) to reach their location... close proximity, recycled air... it's a foregone conclusion that a bug would be easily spread through our tourist districts like a rumor spreads through friends. Just be sure to wash your hands after visiting Fisherman's Wharf. For a couple of reasons.

Q: hi SFist
you have convinced me that you know all, so i bring you my question:

"I once saw an Onion headline, something like 'Rest of U2 is perfectly fine with world hunger'. Somehow, I have always thought that there might be some truth to the headline, perhaps the Onion reporter had some inside scoop or something. How do the rest of U2 feel about world hunger'"

thanks for your help ~~~ Ted

A: That's a good question, Ted. Fact is, no one cares what the other three guys think about world issues. Everyone pays attention to Bono 'cause he's Mister Ego-Face-In-The-Spotlight. What are The Edge's views on globalization? No one really cares.

Of course, none of this matters should you attend a U2 show. Like Fugazi or KISS, experiencing U2's live show may save your life. Too bad U2 isn't doing concerts in any of the places Bono is trying to save...
I'm horribly sick right now. It was pretty inevitable anyways as between Virgin Records, Amoeba Records, Amazon, and iTunes, nobody really goes into CD stores anymore unless it's either super-huge (Virgin) or super-cool (Amoeba). We haven't bought anything music related that exists on a physical plane since we bought our Powerbook last year.

The story in the Examiner has the usual sob stories from customers and residents of North Beach who saw the Tower store as iconic and will miss it. In a way, we're feeling the same way. There was a point in our life in which most of our music collection came from that Tower and we remember standing in line for hours with 102 fever to get tickets for U2's ZooTV tour too. We can also remember the mayhem that occurred the night Guns N' Roses Use Your Illusion I and II were released. But we can also say we haven't stepped foot in that store in over ten years. We'll miss their badly painted representations of current releases but, all we can say about them closing is oh well.

That and they better not put a GAP or Starbucks in that place.

It’s good. Normally SFist refrains from quoting other music reviews, but this one from Spin was just too suh-weet to pass up: “more balls than Sigur Ros and less eccentricity than Moby” Ha! What we’d say is that you should listen to the album despite that review. Hey, we’ve been right all along about La Taqueria, and we’re right about this too ;)

How has San Francisco influenced Film School's Music?
It's a great city to experiment and figure out your own sound. Because it's not bogged down with industry and hype there's a lack of pressure to conform in San Francisco. Lots of bands play for enjoyment and don't really worry about being the next big thing. It's also a city of very diverse bands and independent-minded people. It's not a city where there's one sound that's in and if you're not part of it you won't be part of the SF "scene".

Where was your first show?
Stork Club in Oakland. Just me on acoustic guitar/synth and a drummer.

Have the fans changed since then?
There were no Film School fans at that show, I'm pretty sure about that.

Dream venue to play?
Red Rocks with a younger U2 playing Under a Blood Red Sky.

Where are the best fans?
San Francisco, of course! ;)

What do you like best about your new album?
That it's an album from start to finish and not a collection of singles.

SFist Tech Labs: One Billion Bucks in Their Pocket

Here in the labs, we're not above passing along a bit of Corporate Advertising as if it were genuine tech news. As we settled into our seats at the Castro for the world premiere of documentary , part of the SF Int'l South Asian Film Festival, there was a generalized hubbub as a tall man wearing black and carrying a guitar case strode down the aisle. We heard his escort say, "It's so weird that no one's recognizing you!"

Turns out that man is Pakistani-American rock star Salman Ahmed, the narrator of the documentary It's My Country Too. Ahmed is the lead guitarist for the band Junoon, which has been called the U2 of Pakistan. We think this makes Ahmed Bono (scroll down to read Bono's letter to Ahmed), since the Edge doesn't seem to take too many positions on global politics. Junoon actually seems to be, in spirit and in sound, more like Pakistan's Rage Against The Machine with Ahmed their Tom Morello, but we don't actually know anything about the Pakistani rock scene.

Obviously, that was a long time ago: pre-Apple commercials, pre-hanging out with politicians, pre-heavy-handed attempts at irony, pre-blues co-opting, pre-rock n’ roll Messiah complex. Hell, it was even before Bono leapt into the crowd at Wembley at Live Aid. It was and still is the best show we’ve ever seen.

We loved U2. We bought everything they sold, put posters up in our room, taped everything they did on TV. We even slept out for tickets when the Joshua Tree tour kicked off.

But it's been a long, bumpy road since then. Over the years, we developed a love/hate thing with the band. We love when they get all soaring and inspirational and give their songs a sense of grandeur and power that no other band has ever come close to matching. We love the way Bono's voice mixed with the Edge's chiming church-bell guitar sound can sometimes make our hair stand on end and gives us the warm fuzzies. And we love the way they can make every single member of the audience at a concert sing along with every word, every lyric, every note.

But we also hate when they try to be something they're not, like an R&B band or a techno dance band. Or how with Bono there's a fine line between charismatic and megalomaniac, deep-thinker and pompous ass. And we hate how they’ll often go on and on about some cause to the point where you just want to scream out "just f------ play, God damnit!"

Since that first show, we find ourselves constantly swearing them off only to find ourselves listening to "Achtung Baby" over and over and over again. So as we went to the Oakland Coliseum to see them Tuesday night, one question laid in front of us: will we see Good U2 or Bad U2?

The two have been spotted together in the West Village and at a U2 concert. The bodacious brunette couldn't be reached. She's told pals the friendship is too "preliminary" to go public and it might not get serious. "He's always traveling," said a pal, "and when he's not, he's up every day at 4 a.m. She barely gets to see him."

Well, from what we understand, Bill Hemmer sure isn't a 'workaholic.' And of course, Kim-Kim may not want 'to go public' with it yet, which of course is why there's also an item in the Daily News (she's obviously hired a good publicist). Lloyd Grove confirms the Post's story (third item) and points out that, well, it looks like yet another long-distance relationship for Kimber if Bill gets his wish to work in D.C. -- hey, at least he isn't Michael Bolton.

Political Junkie: the iRoss

It's never too late to let us ...

Arts & Entertainment

Amoeba

Amoeba Records

Chris Daly

Daly

District

music

PoliticalJunkie

SF Politics

Ross Mirkarimi

running

San Francisco

u2

rita

It's never too late to let us know what you're listening to, local politicos! You may remember that we posted just last week something gently mocking our mayor's middle-of-the-road musical tastes, and that we'd also asked all the San Francisco supervisors what they were listening to on their portable music devices. But only Chris Daly had responded at the time we went to press! (in case you were wondering: the Replacements, the Boss, U2, and mainstream hiphop when blogging, among others). Is no one else running our city tragically hip enough to sport the white earbuds?

Well, fret no more! And we should have expected no less from the man who reps Amoeba Records' district -- we got a very nice note from everyone's favorite Greenie, Ross Mirkarimi! "Whenever this rock star is in the Bay Area, I have to visit Glide." About John Paul, he noted that "A lot of rock stars have a Pope complex. This Pope had a rock star complex!" Calling the Catholic Church "the glam rockers of religion," he said that upon meeting the Pope to discuss debt relief for impoverished nations, Bono said to him, "Holy Father, would you like some fly shades?" He said the Pope put Bono's sunglasses on and then winked and smiled -- though the pictures never made it to press. After giving his speech, he started in on "Stand By Me" with the band, choir and congregation, although to save himself from a "forgotten lyrics" moment, he made up San Francisco-appropriate lyrics on the fly.
Yesterday afternoon, Apple introduced a special edition iPod - we figured Steve Jobs might have iPod news hiding up his sleeve. The black and red U2 Special Edition comes with a poster and a $50 iTunes coupon you can use in the iTunes Music Store to buy U2's "The Complete U2" digital boxed set.

Did we mention U2? Their signatures grace the back of the iPod and Bono and Edge (SFist goes by one name, too) were on hand for the launch at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose. After seeing the the ads flash by while our TiVo is on fast-forward we've been anticipating the new iPod. The black looks cool but it still comes with the white headphones so you can spot fellow iPod users at 20 paces and flirt with them on CalTrain.

Also launched today is iPod Photo, which puts photos onto an iPod. Yes, with the music. It took us a minute to figure it out, too. This means color iPods. We could have told you it was coming because Apple always releases cool new things a few weeks after we finally break down and upgrade.

If you can't listen to U2 on your iPod, you could check out Zoo Station's "The Complete U2 Experience" on Saturday at the Last Day Saloon.
Ed.
