Muggles Unite For Harry Potter Trivia, Returning (With Butterbeer) To SF

If you're a regular Hermione Granger when it comes to factoids about the Harry Potter series, you won't want to miss this: The Swedish American Hall, as close as it gets to the Three Broomsticks in San Francisco, will host a Harry Potter trivia night on February 11. It's the second incarnation of what the Chronicle recalled as a smashing success the first time it occurred, in June.

The show comes from Harry Potter Trivia, a traveling group who appears to have had their last contest in Seattle this past week. In addition to themed beverages — butter beer cocktails will be flowing, naturally — Harry Potter Trivia is known for its novelty drinking rules. Don't mention "he who must not be named," for instance. Tickets for both early (6:30 p.m.) and late (9 p.m.) shows are available and are $10 each.

If the existence of this traveling trivia troupe is any indication, there's an ample market for pub trivia nights limited to Harry Potter questions, so get on those tickets quickly. Maybe this popularity shouldn't come as a surprise: Harry Potter often seems to be the only series of books millennials have ever read. But don't worry, there's hope. The last time around, at least, the prizes were gift cards to Green Apple Books.

Do This Tonight: Sex Trivia Night At Virgil's

You've been preparing for this day since you saw your first Playboy, walked in on your older brother doing ... something, and had your first awkward one night stand. Now, it's finally time for all that knowledge you're accumulated to good use (besides, of course, making you a healthy, happy and sexually educated adult).

Let it all hang out (your impeccable inventory of sex facts, that is) at tonight's Sex Trivia night at Virgil's Sea Room. Organized as a benefit for Planned Parenthood Shasta Pacific, the event offers prizes such as Good Vibrations goodies, a San Francisco Armory Kink Tour, gift certificates from local eateries and shops, and "exclusive Planned Parenthood swag" (we assume this will be sourced from PP's legendary condom and lube emporium).

The competition will take the form of a classic pub trivia night, with team of 2 to 6 people competing through five rounds of questions that span everything from sex history to pop-culture to public policy and sex toys. You don't have to drink to play, but since a portion of the drink specials money goes to PPSP, you probably should (there'll be non-alcoholic drink specials, too).

Team sign-ups and drink specials being at 5:30pm, and trivia starts at 7pm.

Rope Burn by Still Flyin' (directed by Isobel Knowles)

Still Flyin': Not to knock (heh) its former incarnation, the Odeon, but we love the Knockout. From obscure DJ nights to live bands, this nightclub seems to pull it off minus any affectation -- a difficult feat for any artsy venue to accomplish. Tonight head over to the Outer Mission spot and catch beloved San Francisco-based supergroup Still Flyin', along with rock-ish outfits Yellow Fever and the OhSees, as they bring down the house starting at 9 p.m. at the Knockout; $5.
Woman in Hiding (1950) & Jeopardy (1953): The Castro Theatre's "Noir City" fest -- featuring dark, shadow-stricken crime dramas from the '40s and '50s -- continues. First, Woman in Hiding has Ida Lupino playing "a successful career woman who marries Mr. Wrong and finds herself desperately trying to evade his plans to dispose of her and take over the business." Yikes! Sounds like he needs a bullet or three to the brain. Then, Jeopardy showcases film noir regular Barbara Stanwyck taking a Mexican vacation that goes horribly awry. Oh noes! Will she live? Find out tonight as the drama unfolds at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., respectively, at the Castro Theatre; $6-9.

Well, all of San Francisco politics is trivial, isn't it? Get that confirmed at tonight's 4th Annual Political Trivia Contest, featuring Chris "Whiskers" Daly, Ross Mirkarimi, and Jake McGoldrick, at a benefit for the John Muir PTA, for a spelling bee for the Western Addition. Categories of questions include: "Streets (and Transportation) of San Francisco," "Interesting Characters of San Francisco," and, in a bracing slap of reality, "Only Trivia That A Policy Wonk Would Know." $5, 7-9 p.m., Temple Bar, 800 Polk (x Turk), $5. Oooh, we hope SFist is featured in the questions! "Give one of the fake names that Peter Ragone posted under on SFist.com."

--Speaking of Peter Ragone fake's names, the band Peter Bjorn and John play tonight at Bimbo's. $20, 8 p.m., 1025 Columbus (x Chestnut). We hope Mr. Ragone and Mr. John Nelson make an appearance! (We still don't know who "byorn" is.) Video above.

Cue the Creepy Psychic-ish Theremin Music

Awesome news for clued-in geeks like SFist Jackson: according to the Psychonauts forum, there's going to be a "PSI Recruitment Seminar" at EB Games from 11am to 1pm. And you know that that means: marketing gimmicks! Free schwag! Trivia games! Maybe even some girls! A perfect opportunity to snatch up a game that you were ultimately going to buy anyway, because everyone's going to be talking about it, and you like to fit in, which is why you bought those spats.

And you never know; since the game's creator, Tim Schafer (the guy behind such hallowed titles as Grim Fandango and Monkey Island and Sam & Max and Day of the Tentacle and so forth), LIVES in SF, maybe maybe maybe he'll even pop by the store. Not like anyone knows what he looks like. Especially since the helicoper accident.
Update: a tipster informs us that Tim will not, in fact, be in attendance. But we'll be there, and maybe we'll claim to be him.
