Local photog Brendan Luna snapped these shots of a tree blown over by fierce winds in Duboce Park on Saturday. "Windy conditions on Saturday at about 2 p.m. caused a large tree in Duboce Park to be uprooted and fall on parked vehicles," reports the Examiner. "A fire dispatcher said no one was injured. Winds were gusting from the west up to 27 mph."

Berkeley Tree-Sitters Sentenced
Three of the privileged youths who protested the removal of the Berkeley oak grove were sentenced in Berkeley on Monday. Kingman Lim and Zachary RunningWolf Brown, both ground supporters, and Michael Schuck, a tree-sitter, were handed five-day jail sentences and "found to be in contempt of court." Judge Marshall Whitley in Alameda County Superior Court also ordered them to pay an undetermined amount toward the University of California's attorney fees. Six other tree protesters were sentenced to 50 hours of community service. (Oakland Tribune)
Cal Gets Another Green Light to Cut Down Annoying Oaks
Oak tree advocates and a neighborhood group be damned! A state appeals court gave UCB the go-ahead to put up the sports training center next to Memorial Stadium, effectively hammering the final nail in the Save the Oaks coffin. This is yet another ruling in favor of hacking down the old oaks, and a win for "more than 400 student athletes who will now have the safe and suitable facilities they deserve," according to Cal athletic director Sandy Barbour. And the project will finally -- finally! -- start sometime....well, no one knows yet. The few remaining protesters will remain up in the trees until further notice. Hrumph. (SFGate)
Dolores Crash
Ouch. Is this your car? Our condolences. Yesterday's breezy breezes by DPark seem to have dislodged a branch directly into your rear window. If you need more photos for insurance, let us know -- we've got a bunch. In the mean time, everyone else can busy themselves with feeling smug for not owning this car.
Old Navy Sued Over Pine Tree-Shaped Air Freshener Shirt Design
The maker of those little tree-shaped air fresheners you find dangling from rear view mirrors have sued Gap Inc. over Old Navy's use of the iconic image in a t-shirt, emblazoned with the slogan "Keeping it Fresh." The federal lawsuit, according to the Examiner, was brought against the local retail mammoth in U.S. District Court in Syracuse, N.Y. The company, simply titled Car-Freshener Corporation of Watertown, claims that "the design on the T-shirts is identical to their trademarked design, which is used by the company on car air fresheners, apparel and other items."
Before and After Storm Shot
(Before we begin, we should point out that all of this rain is very good for us. That said, it is our God-given right as Californians to go clinically insane over the slightest change in weather patterns. So: %@#%^W$&^&!)
