UPDATE: Pickup Drives Off Treasure Island Into Water

Earlier this afternoon, at around 1:40 p.m., a pickup truck careened into the water off of Treasure Island. According to SFAppeal, "The truck entered the water on the east side of the island shortly after 1:40 p.m." the truck's driver was rescued from the vehicle 30 minutes later. "The victim was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening." No word yet how, exactly, the driver ended up in the Bay. UPDATE: Alas, the driver of the pickup truck died.

According to local (LiveJournal) blogger Shatter707, he and his dog were attacked this weekend on Treasure Island. Check it:

Jim Herd over at SF Citizen just sent us this rather harrowing, though nevertheless exciting, text: "treasure island blocked off by police. eastbound off-ramp closed. officers with shotguns standing around. 10 police cars...as of 3[0] mins ago." Egads!

Captured at Treasure Island. Please advise.

Does S.F. have any other old-school stand alone phone booths?

Certain blocks speak to specific eras. While the local architecture can play a significant role, perhaps the most crucial factor is intangible...one that can’t be defined. It’s a mood we begin to sense as we sift around an area - what we imagine it to have been like so many years before, and in the case of certain places, how little it’s changed in the years since. Mission St. in the Excelsior had us thinking 1972 or so. Country Club Drive in the Parkside had 1954 down pat. Sturgeon St. on Treasure Island seemed rutted in about 1987. Amethyst Way in Diamond Heights feels like 1966.

What started out yesterday morning as a PG-13, innocent little fender bender has now turned into our very own R-rated environmental disaster. Smashing. Here's a summary of today's oil spill-related chaos, followed by volunteering and clean-up information. -- Today Gavin Newsom sent down word from wherever he's recovering from his hangover -- we kid. sort of -- that SF will get litigious on the agency or persons responsible for the 58,000 gallons of oil...

That idea of congestion pricing in San Francisco, meaning charging people to drive in certain places around the city, has moved from crazy pipe dream stage to crazy pipe dream planning stage. Recently, the city was awarded $180 million to study the idea and there are already two potential places being mapped out by the people mapping it out. Instead of charging cars to go downtown, the idea would be to take it to the bridge as it were. The first place would be on Doyle Drive, one of the roads that takes you to the Golden Gate Bridge . In fact, one of the conditions of all this money is that the city would just have to do such a thing. Another spot being considered is right outside of Treasure Island. They're thinking up the idea of maybe charging $1 or $2 a car and it could work by having people use the FastTrak system, or at least we hope so as being from the East Coast, having to stop constantly for tolls gets kind of tedious. Also a bad place to be if you've just started a mob war against the Tattaglia and Sollozzo families.

it's only alcohol.... We're now only gingerly turning the pages. Please don't be pee. Letters: Someone hates Chris Daly. You can't talk to MUNI head Nat Ford when he's in the john? (Cartoon at left.) Cover article: The Treasure Island Music Fest is gonna be awesome!!!!!!! (We have got to remember to pick up tickets for it soon.) $85 to eat in the dark this Friday? (No link to the actual entry on the site.) Wow, everyone seems to love this BioShock game. Liveblogging (in a manner of speaking) Fringe Fest. Meredith eats downtown. But oh no!! SFist Ced says if she keeps up the good columns, he's going to retire Mercredi, c'est Ravioli! Noooo!!! The Donnas are back again, as are the New Pornographers. And the Bouncer's thoughts on autism.

There are no less than three fantastic music festivals all taking place over the weekend of September 14-16. What gives? And how do we choose? Since we live in the bay area, perhaps our decision has been made for us: we're heading to the inaugural Treasure Island Music Festival presented by the fine folks at Noise Pop and Another Planet. The two day festival features 14 bands each day on two stages with mostly hip hop and electronica on Saturday (Theivery Corporation, DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist, M.I.A.) and a great lineup of indie rock on Sunday (Modest Mouse, Built To Spill, Clap Your Hands). And it all takes place on Treasure Island, that scrap of land you've seen a thousand times but likely have never set foot on. Getting there is sure to be an adventure! Check out the full lineup and get your tickets. We've got a pair of tickets for one lucky winner to go to one day of the Treasure Island Music Festival. (We're not sure which date yet but will update this post as soon as we hear back from our contact! But both days are really good so you can't go wrong. Contest ends 8/22; winner will be notified via email.)

We’re standing on a giant slab of landfill in the middle of San Francisco Bay. Every residence in sight is a boxy triplex, and most of the cars appear to be about 15 years past their prime. Come to think of it, the block itself appears to be about 15 years past its prime. If it weren’t for the bay breezes and gulls aplenty, we could be cajoled into thinking we’re poking around the crusty outskirts of Stockton. But no, we’re much closer to home than that. We’re visiting San Francisco’s most marginalized subculture: Treasure Island.

The commute across the Bay Bridge is a little backed up because of a three-alarm fire burning on Treasure Island. The building in question is an abandoned warehouse, and started around 7 a.m. today.

--Have you checked out the footage (above, 4:34) of someone driving their Prius into the N Judah tunnel? The derisive laughter as the driver sheepishly gets out of the car is ) is genius. (We don't know how to get rid of those white edges on that YouTube screen.) [N Judah Chronicles.]

Well, it's about time! As the progressives run around in a circle waving their hands around in terror for another week or two until June 2, the more right-leaning folks have decisively made their move! Former supervisor and sometimes lounge singer Tony Hall has filed his paperwork to run for mayor.

There was a huge and spectacular fire at an abandoned warehouse on Treasure Island early Thursday morning. The SFFD let it burn because there was no risk that the fire would spread and it was too dangerous to send people in. They had to use the fire boat (which uses water from the bay) to put out the flames because there wasn't enough water pressure on Treasure Island itself for the hydrants to work.

Well, that's kind of a cinematically creepy incident -- the SFPD are investigating an accident where it turned out a 43-year-old man who crashed his car into a house on 29th and Santiago in the Sunset had been shot. The collision started a small house fire which was quickly extinguished. Investigators have said that several shots were heard in the area at the time, and several other cars were hit with bullets as well.

San Francisco unveiled some shiny new plan to win back the affections of the Niners yesterday. The plan includes a redevelopment of Candlestick Point and Hunters Point and features a new stadium for the Niners, lots of parks, lots of housing, office space and a new arena. Best part? Supposedly the plan means no money down for the city. So far, there is no truth to the rumors that the plan also includes lots of shiny, pretty ponies for everybody to have.

Hey, it looks like today's theme is MUNI. But who doesn't love stories about MUNI? Anyways, the Chron did a story and discovered that MUNI has a lot of problems right now, mainly that it's on time only 70% of the time. That's 15% lower than mandated by Prop E. In fact, only three lines approach the 85% mark.

Here's the good news: there really isn't any news. Then again, who would know in the midst of the wall-to-wall Anna Nicole coverage? Oh, there was a staff shakeup and Gavin made a joke, but there really is nothing out there. No earth-shaking revelation, no new story of Gavin's lonely life living a Frank Sinatra tune, no clash with reporters. We guess that'll happen tomorrow for Fake Question Time II. That should be fun.

It's being reported that everyone's favorite whipping girl, Annemarie Conroy, has resigned as of this morning. Conroy was the Executive Director of Emergency Services but was recently demoted mainly for the sin of having no real experience doing anything emergency service related. After being demoted, the Board of Supes then pulled the financing for her recently created position. She was so popular that Aaron Peskin couldn't even say anything nice about her leaving; saying instead "there was no resignation. Her job was evaporated." Ouch.

And now, the story you've all been waiting for anxiously, it's the latest in Treasure Island! We know, we know...you can't say SFist doesn't bring the excitement.

Matier & Ross today has an interview with Gavin about the upcoming Mayoral election and his future in politics that's getting a lot of play. So what does the future hold for Mayor McDreamy? Only that he is "absolutely not convinced" that he's going to run again. How's that for definitive ambivalence.

Yesterday, on Treasure Island, the Governator pretty much gave an example of just why he's crushing Phil Angelides in the polls. With San Francisco in the background, Gavin Newsom and Speaker of the Assembly Fabian Nunez at his side, and Bush's poodle Tony Blair live via video feed, the Governator signed a bill making California the toughest state on carbon dioxide and other gases emissions. Hell, maybe the toughest locale ever. But wait, that's not all. He will also sign a bill later this week that will forbid state electric utilities from buying electricity from high-polluting plants elsewhere.
