Another victim has lost a wallet, a cellphone and an unspecified amount of blood to 2012's knife crime epidemic. According to police, the 24-year-old male victim was walking near North Point Drive on the lawless landfills of Treasure Island when two suspects snuck up on him, held a knife to his throat, punched him in the face and slashed his neck before knocking him to the ground.

Veterans' Hospital Lab Worker Dies Of Meningitis
A 25-year-old researcher at S.F.'s VA hospital died Saturday morning very shortly after showing the first symptoms of a serious meningitis infection, which he likely contracted from working with the bacteria in his lab. The man, who lives on Treasure Island with a girlfriend and roommates, began feeling sick Friday night and went to bed. When he awoke with worse symptoms (generally high fever, stiff neck, headache, vomiting) the next morning, he had his friends take him back to the VA hospital, where he died a short time later.
Treasure Island Opponents Get New Derogatory Acronym: NIMLOS
As the Treasure Island development plan continues to move forward, a new variation on the NIMBY has emerged. The Examiner's Ken Garcia gives us: NIMLOS. Unpacking that leads us to: "Not in My Line of Sight" - a handy new term to describe a telescopic version of the backyard classic. In this case, Garcia is prodding at the Telegraph Hill residents who don't want the proposed residential towers on Treasure Island to interrupt their pristine bay views, but it could also be used to describe the backroom moves put on by flip-flopping progressives who have alternatively supported and stalled the plan. Garcia elaborates:
Treasure Island Development Plan Approved by Planning Commission
In a lengthy meeting last night, the Planning Commission approved a $1.5 billion development plan for Treasure Island. The plan calls for 8,000 housing units, 140,000 square feet of commercial space, some 500 hotel rooms and 300 acres of public parks in addition to a new ferry terminal. The vote from the commission was a tight 4-3 after "a long line of public speakers" mostly spoke in favor of the new housing or against the number of parking spaces. The three nay votes, by the way, all came from commissioners appointed by the Board of Supes. The four mayor-appointed commissioners were all on board with the plan and the matter will now head over to the supes. Expect it the final vote to come up on the agenda early this summer. Has God Forsaken Treasure Island?
Treasure Island is in need of a drastic makeover. The little swatch of land between SF and the East Bay is, for lack of a better work, harrowing. Which is why a "master plan for a showplace 21st century neighborhood on Treasure Island" is in the works. But, as with any city saddled with a population that fears getting older and thus loathes growth, not everyone is happy about the plan. It turns out that, according to SFGate, Treasure Island 2.0 won't "include room for a single church, synagogue or place of worship," which has John Elberling, director of the Treasure Island Development Authority, sad. "I don't think it's right," he explained. Read all about it.
UPDATE: Pickup Drives Off Treasure Island Into Water
Earlier this afternoon, at around 1:40 p.m., a pickup truck careened into the water off of Treasure Island. According to SFAppeal, "The truck entered the water on the east side of the island shortly after 1:40 p.m." the truck's driver was rescued from the vehicle 30 minutes later. "The victim was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening." No word yet how, exactly, the driver ended up in the Bay. UPDATE: Alas, the driver of the pickup truck died.
Underground Dog Fighting Results In Canine, Human Attack?
According to local (LiveJournal) blogger Shatter707, he and his dog were attacked this weekend on Treasure Island. Check it:
Update: Treasure Island Standoff
Jim Herd over at SF Citizen just sent us this rather harrowing, though nevertheless exciting, text: "treasure island blocked off by police. eastbound off-ramp closed. officers with shotguns standing around. 10 police cars...as of 3[0] mins ago." Egads!

Blocker: 000 Amethyst
Certain blocks speak to specific eras. While the local architecture can play a significant role, perhaps the most crucial factor is intangible...one that can’t be defined. It’s a mood we begin to sense as we sift around an area - what we imagine it to have been like so many years before, and in the case of certain places, how little it’s changed in the years since.
Mission St. in the Excelsior had us thinking 1972 or so. Country Club Drive in the Parkside had 1954 down pat. Sturgeon St. on Treasure Island seemed rutted in about 1987.
Amethyst Way in Diamond Heights feels like 1966.

Your Cosco Bucan Oil Spill Roundup
What started out yesterday morning as a PG-13, innocent little fender bender has now turned into our very own R-rated environmental disaster. Smashing. Here's a summary of today's oil spill-related chaos, followed by volunteering and clean-up information. -- Today Gavin Newsom sent down word from wherever he's recovering from his hangover -- we kid. sort of -- that SF will get litigious on the agency or persons responsible for the 58,000 gallons of oil...

Baby, You Can Charge My Car
That idea of congestion pricing in San Francisco, meaning charging people to drive in certain places around the city, has moved from crazy pipe dream stage to crazy pipe dream planning stage. Recently, the city was awarded $180 million to study the idea and there are already two potential places being mapped out by the people mapping it out. Instead of charging cars to go downtown, the idea would be to take it to the bridge as it were. The first place would be on Doyle Drive, one of the roads that takes you to the Golden Gate Bridge . In fact, one of the conditions of all this money is that the city would just have to do such a thing. Another spot being considered is right outside of Treasure Island. They're thinking up the idea of maybe charging $1 or $2 a car and it could work by having people use the FastTrak system, or at least we hope so as being from the East Coast, having to stop constantly for tolls gets kind of tedious. Also a bad place to be if you've just started a mob war against the Tattaglia and Sollozzo families.

When The Lights Go Down In The City
There are no less than three fantastic music festivals all taking place over the weekend of September 14-16. What gives? And how do we choose? Since we live in the bay area, perhaps our decision has been made for us: we're heading to the inaugural Treasure Island Music Festival presented by the fine folks at Noise Pop and Another Planet. The two day festival features 14 bands each day on two stages with mostly hip hop and electronica on Saturday (Theivery Corporation, DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist, M.I.A.) and a great lineup of indie rock on Sunday (Modest Mouse, Built To Spill, Clap Your Hands). And it all takes place on Treasure Island, that scrap of land you've seen a thousand times but likely have never set foot on. Getting there is sure to be an adventure! Check out the full lineup and get your tickets. We've got a pair of tickets for one lucky winner to go to one day of the Treasure Island Music Festival. (We're not sure which date yet but will update this post as soon as we hear back from our contact! But both days are really good so you can't go wrong. Contest ends 8/22; winner will be notified via email.)
Blocker: 1400 Sturgeon
We’re standing on a giant slab of landfill in the middle of San Francisco Bay. Every residence in sight is a boxy triplex, and most of the cars appear to be about 15 years past their prime. Come to think of it, the block itself appears to be about 15 years past its prime.
If it weren’t for the bay breezes and gulls aplenty, we could be cajoled into thinking we’re poking around the crusty outskirts of Stockton. But no, we’re much closer to home than that. We’re visiting San Francisco’s most marginalized subculture: Treasure Island.
Your Commute: Fire On Treasure Island
The commute across the Bay Bridge is a little backed up because of a three-alarm fire burning on Treasure Island. The building in question is an abandoned warehouse, and started around 7 a.m. today.

--Have you checked out the footage (above, 4:34) of someone driving their Prius into the N Judah tunnel? The derisive laughter as the driver sheepishly gets out of the car is ) is genius. (We don't know how to get rid of those white edges on that YouTube screen.) [N Judah Chronicles.]
We Have A Mayoral Candidate!
Well, it's about time! As the progressives run around in a circle waving their hands around in terror for another week or two until June 2, the more right-leaning folks have decisively made their move! Former supervisor and sometimes lounge singer Tony Hall has filed his paperwork to run for mayor.
SFist Blotter
There was a huge and spectacular fire at an abandoned warehouse on Treasure Island early Thursday morning. The SFFD let it burn because there was no risk that the fire would spread and it was too dangerous to send people in. They had to use the fire boat (which uses water from the bay) to put out the flames because there wasn't enough water pressure on Treasure Island itself for the hydrants to work.
SFist Blotter
Well, that's kind of a cinematically creepy incident -- the SFPD are investigating an accident where it turned out a 43-year-old man who crashed his car into a house on 29th and Santiago in the Sunset had been shot. The collision started a small house fire which was quickly extinguished. Investigators have said that several shots were heard in the area at the time, and several other cars were hit with bullets as well.
San Francisco Steps Up and Gives 110%
San Francisco unveiled some shiny new plan to win back the affections of the Niners yesterday. The plan includes a redevelopment of Candlestick Point and Hunters Point and features a new stadium for the Niners, lots of parks, lots of housing, office space and a new arena. Best part? Supposedly the plan means no money down for the city. So far, there is no truth to the rumors that the plan also includes lots of shiny, pretty ponies for everybody to have.
