But the identity of the buyer, known as Flannery Associates, remains shrouded in mystery, raising concerns for government officials about national security.

The investment group Flannery Associates has become the largest landowner in Solano County, securing a staggering 52,000 acres of land surrounding the base, according to a Wall Street Journal investigation published this month. Travis Air Force Base serves as a major cargo and troop transport hub on the West Coast, and is the largest employer in Solano County. Reportedly, Flannery Associates' strategic land grabs mean that they own many properties aside the base, and even more into the marshy regions near the Sacramento River in Rio Vista, far from Fairfield's urban center.

But little is known about the company. As SFGATE reported, public records reveal that the company is registered in Delaware, allowing it to withhold information about its business partners — an approach often employed by LLCs.

The local congressman, John Garamendi, who represents California's 8th District, told ABC7 that there’s “reason to be concerned.”

"Literally three sides of that base are totally controlled by the Flannery group," Garamendi said in an interview.

According to ABC7 and WSJ, the lawyer representing the company described the firm as a group of almost all American families who are trying to diversify their investments into agricultural land. But Garamendi is reportedly not sure if that’s true, and questioned the company's intentions and financial backing.

"Who are these people?" he added. "Where did they get the money where they could pay five to ten times the normal value that others would pay for this farmland?"

Garamendi also reportedly said that Flannery is suing nearby landowners, accusing them of scheming to prevent the company from buying their land.

The government and military are continuing to actively investigate, according to the WSJ.

SFist Reviews...
LAist got jolted by a small, but nerve tingling earthquake last week, but there was much more excitement in the air than that. In depth, they discovered a neighborhood that many natives never knew about and munched on food at a rare Buddhist Temple's Farmers Market while Google launched their street view maps feature that largely ignored most of Los Angeles. The only way things could get any better is if he were assigned to Nicole Richie's DUI case, or maybe an art show where the the Golden Girls go wild (yes, from the TV show).

Torontoist got tons of photos of one of the city's biggest parties, Caribana, and celebrated girl-oriented rock. Twenty years. We can still remember when that album (yes, album) came out and being totally gobsmacked the first time we saw the video for "Sweet Child O' Mine" at like 2 in the morning on MTV. God, we're old. And speaking of old, the Giants celebrated the Barry's birthday by playing a long, 13 inning baseball game. You gotta hand it to the old men, despite being closer to 100 losses than 100 wins, they do still play hard. Case in point last night where they had a four run ninth inning to tie the game and send the game into extra innings. Of course, they still. We were so sure the Giants would eventually lose this game that we wrote this post a few innings before the game ended.

Travis Buck (.265 AVG, .371 OBP, .538 SLG, 6HR, 17 RBI) - A-

With the plethora of healthy outfielders at the start of Spring Training this year (my, how quickly things change), chances seemed slim that Buck, despite tearing up the minor leagues, would be able to break into the big league club, and looked to be starting the season in AAA. However, when Dan Johnson’s injury forced Nick Swisher to first base, the window of opportunity was cracked open, ever so slightly, and Buck took full advantage. Battling through injuries to his wrists and elbow (let’s be honest, ‘Athletics’ this year is synonymous with ‘Injury-ridden’), Buck has put up highly impressive rookie numbers and as the team is coming back
together, he looks to keep a spot in the big league lineup, while staying healthy. If Buck can remain healthy, and keep these numbers steady, he will be a legitimate candidate for Rookie of the Year, and a huge help to the power-starved A’s.

Shannon Stewart (.276 AVG, .357 OBP, .347 SLG, 2HR, 16 RBI) - B+

Shannon Stewart has just about lived up to his billing, putting together a nice little season so far in the outfield. Despite warning injury reports, he has stayed healthier than the majority of the team, and has been a steady presence in the clubhouse, and on the field. The A’s would like to see him hit with a little more power, but overall, there isn’t much to complain about.

Nick Swisher (.305 AVG, .433 OBP, .537 SLG, 9HR, 32 RBI) - A+

The biggest off-field move for the A’s so far this year was signing Swisher to a contract. More and more every day, he is looking like the best move the A’s have made since they traded Haren for Mulder. Swisher, who could be a Gold Glove candidate at first base, looks as good as any top players in the league right now on offense, and for a switch-hitter to put up the kind of
numbers that he has, it is pretty amazing.
Outfield

It's Got to Be the Morning After

Here's todays sports news of the day

SF News

A's

Astros

Barry Zito

Bengie Molina

Chad Gaudin

games

Giants

On KNBR

Rice

San Francisco

Bay Area Sports

The A

the game

The Giants

Travis

Travis Buck

White Sox

Jon

Giants 9 Astros 1- On KNBR last night they had a long discussion about whether it was lame that Giants’ fans didn't bring a broom to last night’s game. Us? We think bringing a broom is one step below face painting. But it might have been nice to have brought one because the Giants did sweep the series with the Astros. It's up to you to decide which was the most improbable thing that happened during the game-- a Bonds-less offense scoring nine runs, Barry Zito pitching a good game, Bengie Molina hitting a triple, or Condeleeza Rice actually showing her face in San Francisco. It was a typical day on the front. A battle was brewing, but people continued to live their lives, knowing that the day might well be their last. Women in hoop skirts made meals while the men practiced battalion maneuvers and cleaned their bayonets. No really. This was yesterday in California. SFist decided to celebrate Memorial Day by hitting the Civil War re-enactment at Roaring Camp in the Santa Cruz Hills. We were curious about this event for several reasons, the first being our certainty that there were no battles of the Civil War fought in California (turns out our public education was correct on that point). We also have always been fascinated by extreme hobbies, especially those that involve re-creating stuff. We’ve always sort of shied away from Renaissance Faires (in all honesty they kind of creep us out), but decided that the Civil War was one re-creation we could get behind. Besides, since we already knew the outcome of the war, there wasn’t too much to worry about.

strong finish last year was impressive, but what, uh, impressed me most was that during the last
week of the season, after they had battled all the way back to catch up with the ChiSox, the
Wahoos went 1-6 to finish six games out. C.C. Sabathia is a legitimate ace, and Travis Hafner

adding Paul Byrd and Jason Michaels will help. Cleveland looks good to dethrone Chicago in the

Maybe you can't stay dry, but at least you've got the Essefficist to keep you warm.

We've got two questions today. The first one's right out of Dear Abby:

My eleven-year-old daughter dresses like a whore. What can I do about it?

-Christie

Oh, Christie, you know we all have these kinds of problems sometimes. All we can really tell you is that girls will be girls and teenagers will be teenagers. She'll get over it. Console yourself with the thought that at least you don't have to change her diapers anymore. (And by the way, here's something fun, relevant, and, hopefully for Christie, comforting, that you find if you Google "eleven year old.")

Moving on to a slightly more serious realm, here's a question from someone you know and love:

So at eleven o'clock last night I was walking home with my friend Bayete after picking up some Thai food. I'm as white as they come and still wearing my work clothes -- black sweater, slacks, shoes. Bayete, who's black, is wearing a down jacket, jeans, and a bandana. So it's cold, late, I'm tired and a little tipsy, and decide to hail a cab. A taxi comes down 24th heading east from Mission, I flag it, he slows down, as I begin to walk up, Bayete follows, and suddenly the cab darts away. Needless to say, I'm not pleased. Some things were shouted after him to the effect of "You racist motherf**ker."

So my question is, what's the best way to lay the smackdown on cab driving bigots? Can I call some city commission, report the incident, time, location and car number and walk away knowing that this guy's going to at least get fined or maybe lose his badge? Or do I need to have video taped evidence, fill out lots of paperwork and attend hearings?

Anotsfistjacksonymous

Ouch. Not being Travis Bickle ourselves, we turned to our good friend Jerkowitz, a longtime San Francisco cabdriver, who gave us the skinny.
Dear Essefficist-
