Gothamist found that an explosive set off outside the Times Square army recruiting center may be similar to five past bombings in New York City.

Seattlest worried when severed right feet and bottles of rat poison started washing up on local beaches.

Shanghaiist was surprised by Bjork's rooting for Tibetan independence at her concert (see video), and the political fallout has only just begun.

SFist debated the merits of new bronze plaques that will be placed in locations where San Francisco's homeless have died.

DCist was obliged to respond to the worst Washington Post Outlook column ever published, in which conservative writer Charlotte Allen tried to make the case that women are dumb.

LAist found Satan's ice cream truck trolling the streets, and they recorded the music.

Some crafty Torontoist readers didn't like the dearth of ski hills in downtown Toronto, so they just built one of their own on their deck and (of course) recorded a video of them all taking turns on it.

Bostonist knows the city's subway and bus system, the MBTA, has problems. So does this 17-year-old who submitted a report and told the MBTA brass how to fix it.

Phillyist explored the possibility of an Ivy League prostitute, while their commenters debated the most ethical approach to proving or debunking the story.

Phillyist explored an impending implosion and lived to tell the tale.

Gothamist marveled at the city's new NYC-branded condom campaign - especially the use of a Toronto landmark in the advertising. (Also, fun fact: Gothamist turned five years old yesterday.)

Tired of the worldwide Scientology protests? Torontoist totally isn't: they covered the big downtown protest the day it happened, and followed up with an examination of all of the protests' legality, according to hate crime laws, a few days later.

LAist also got into the fray outside the "Anonymous" Scientology protests, netting a killer photo essay and some on-site video of the vociferous crew in their masks.

And would you look at that: SFist covered last Sunday's thetan hatefest too.

According to Seattlest, area travel author Rick Steves and the Washington state ACLU want to talk to you about legalizing pot.

DCist took a good look at the results of the "Potomac Primary" and put together an interactive map that shows the breakdown of exactly why Washington, D.C. is Obama Country.

Speaking of which, Austinist reported on Mayor Will Wynn (heh) endorsing Barack Obama.

Chicagoist continues to be obsessed with all odd Obama accessories,
like these
fly one-of-a-kind, hand-painted kicks.

And in non-Obama/Scientology-free news, Bostonist met with one of the wine world's biggest renegades, Gary Vaynerchuk, host of the Wine Library TV podcast.

Gothamist was amazed after the Giants won the Super Bowl, the city went wild, and it witnessed a ticker-tape parade.

Barack Obama drew 20,000+ ahead of Seattle’s Saturday caucus.

Londonist had Super Tuesday too.

Elusive guerrilla street artist Banksy revisits Los Angeles.

After the Patriots lost the Super Bowl and came this close to making history, Bostonist spent much of the week consoling itself and trying to think about baseball.

Toronto has been experiencing a ton of snow lately, so
they tried to make the best of it by photographing a big, organized snowball fight.

SFist partook in some hipster bashing.

Shanghaiist uncovered all the sordid details of Hong Kong's biggest celebrity sex scandal ever.

DCist was concerned about a new reality TV show in the works that might make people who live in Washington look like privileged jerks.

Phillyist wants a pet baby more than anything in the world.

At this time the cause of death is officially unknown, but it was "sudden" and a brain aneurysm is rumored to be at fault, according to the Chronicle.

Making his major league debut in 2001 with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Kennedy went on to play for other teams such as the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Toronto Blue Jays, and of course, the one and only A's.

His career record, it seems, was "43-61 with a 4.79 ERA." (You more sporty types probably know what that means better than we could possibly explain.) He is survived by his wife, Jamie, and his one-year-old son.

Banner week for SFist as the site's new editor introduced himself -- hooray for Brock! While the NY Times weighed in on SF's mayoral race, only SFist had the (insert tongue firmly into cheek) hard-hitting latest on candidate/activist Josh Wolf. Coverage of a protest vs. gentrification spawned a fantastic debate amongst SFist's readers. Finally, from the sublime to the ridiculous: video of a man that confused a Board of Supes meeting with "open mic night" and sang a custom version of Madonna's "Borderline" to a much-beleaguered board member.

Phillyist has had a busy week, looking for power outlets while liveblogging the First Annual BlogPhiladelphia "unconference." (Here's day 1 and day 2 of their coverage, and a video from the event.) They also interviewed Chris Funk of the Decemberists (since those guys are in town this weekend to play with a local orchestra), reviewed that little indie film about the wizard child, and helped out with tips on how to act if you run into that annoying ex of yours. Finally, they warned the suburbs to Beware of the Blob!

For LAist, it was a week of new beginnings. Soccer Star, David Beckham, made his official move to Los Angeles just in time for LAist's Neighborhood Project, which will cover the 170+ neighborhoods in the city. They interviewed the Los Angeles Fire Department and found that they may be the most Web 2.0 savvy government office in the world. In other government fun, a bill in the state senate is being pushed through to ensure that a particular person remains in office indefinitely. Speaking of things that remain forever, you have probably seen TV shows and movies that were shot at the rickety-almost-alling-over Lacy Street Studios.

You might have Duck Tours in your city by now, Bostonist has been watching them roll the streets and rivers for years -- now there are two, and a court case. A couple weeks ago news came out that former governor, now presidential hopeful Mitt Romney strapped his dog to the roof on family vacations, now blogs have gone to the dogs. A new name for a subway stop has Bostonist coming up with their own suggestions. They said goodbye to a beloved by some, hated by others, personality. Oh, and, as usual in Boston, Sox fans believe.

After the jump: monkey business in Toronto! Dragon fruit in N.Y.C.! Naked shopworkers in London! And why shouldn't you swim in D.C.'s Potomac River?

But the biggest stories of the week was that the Mayor's Hot Tamale was revealed, and that a Kwik-E-Mart was erected in Burbank.

Phillyist was busy doing the Fourth of July up right, exercising their First Amendment rights by writing a food column about sex, revealing a musical coverup, reminding barbecue goers to eat pigs, but not act like them, and hating on , all the while trying not to get run over. In other First Amendment news, a local anchorman offended the whole city with a racial epithet – just because you can say it doesn't mean you should. Meanwhile, Phillyist readers were embracing their freedom of expression by celebrating—and photographing—the city's Fourth of July Festivities.

Torontoist asked their readers an honest well-meaning question: is Toronto ugly? They said goodbye to Zanta, Toronto's answer to the naked cowboy, who is leaving for a suburb, and to a famous truck. They mused about the problem of towers and debated whether native protests are justified. Oh, and they were the first media organization to have anything on a free White Stripes concert happening in a downtown YMCA as it was happening, so that was pretty awesome.

Londonist are living through interesting times. With terror alerts becoming part of the daily routine, they marked the two year anniversary since the Tube blasts that killed 52 people. All while coping with some biblical weather. Meanwhile, no slowdown on the cultural events. The biggest race in the world came to London this weekend, when the Tour de France pedaled off from London. And the O2 Dome - the largest roofed building anywhere, ever - finally reopened. So with all this excitement, perhaps not the best week to ban smoking.

Over on SFist, a bus driver revealed his top 10 list of things that annoy the crap out of him. Another 10-item list: activist Josh Wolf's action plan for SF; he's running for Mayor almost a year after being jailed for refusing to turn over videotapes. On the fine arts side, SFist interviewed the symphony's young, talented associate conductor. Folks were bummed and outraged at a stupid 4th of July injury to a teen drummer. Good thing Jesse Jackson's on the way to save the city.

As Chicagoist counts down the days to its third anniversary party, they found all-organic pizza to be underwhelming amidst the hoopla, tried to stay on the good side of Jack White (unlike a DJ who played the unreleased new White Stripes record on-air), detailed the rules and regulations behind sidewalk cafes , and beat up a little more on their favorite political whipping boy.

Phillyist denied the sudden onslaught of summer by taking a look at their snow-covered downtown.
Torontoist had one hell of a busy week. Besides being the first media outlet to get photos of the interior of the gorgeous Daniel Libeskind redesign 0f the largest museum in Canada, they found their prime minister on Facebook (sorta), and interviewed the brain behind PostSecret, Frank Warren. They launched a new feature, Touch Up Toronto (inspired by Londonist's project over the past year). Finally, they decided to give up on Amato, their (now ex-)favourite pizza place in the city.

DCist spent the week asking the tough questions, like whether cops on Segways are hilarious, or helpful, and whether the good people behind Esquire magazine actually know where the best bar in D.C. is. More seriously, they also questioned a plan to close a popular nightclub because a shooting happened outside it, and a heated debate emerged after they wondered if unsupervised kids were back to throwing rocks and attacking people in the Columbia Heights neighborhood. Finally they launched their new wine column, because the real question is, what are you drinking tonight?

Austinist was thrilled that a local landmark finished renovations, but saddened that another classic watering hole might close because of zoning problems. Tickets for the Austin Film Festival went on sale, and a bunch of extraordinary students from the University of Texas embarked on a 4,500-mile ride to Alaska. Local police turned down a chance to be on "Cops", which was still not as disappointing as the Texas House failing to get rid of its speaker. Austinist finally learned what $335.9 million worth of assorted drugs looked like, and are awfully fond of a local buzz band.

If you wear Hooker shoes at Dodger Stadium, LAist is going to catch you (and no Kosher Hot Dogs? What's with that?). Huge news in town is that Kobe Bryant is leaving the Lakers (or maybe... not). In other sports news, bikini races at Hollywood Park anyone? Unfortunately at the Silver Lake Trader Joes, you need to race across the street if you want to stay alive. To rest off all those sporty activities, Los Angeles has another movie theatre full of posh fun including alcoholic drinks, assigned and cushy seating and free parking.

A lot of things to watch at SFist this week. There was a little whale watching, with a mother and calf that had lost their way. With shock, awe, and amusement, they checked out Google's new "street level view" maps. SFist watched and positively reviewed the RiffTrax show. They saw an L.A. paper's take on perhaps their most famous 'hood, The Haight. The whole nation watched on pins and needles as a Bay Area resident won the national spelling bee. All of this while the city ran from zee-oh-em-bee-eye-ee-ess.

Bostonist watched as the Red Sox' Kevin Youkilis continued his consecutive game hitting streak to 23, and started up his very own blog (they even created a slick "has a posse" graphic), took a lesson from Chicago voting (vote early and often) and figured out how to make those 25 all-star votes count best for the Sox. Baseball isn't the only sport in town - the Patriot's Tom Brady is on the platform of a candidate in the commonwealth, or, more precisely his "equipment." The Mooninites attack Boston again, this time using fax machines. And Passim is named top hub club, but it's not the 70's anymore.

Londonist are beginning to think they live in the world's most surreal city. First, there's the High Court judge who speaks in poetry. Then, there's the man who ate a corgi to protest about Prince Phillip shooting animals. And if the royals aren't killing foxes, the suburban giant cats are.

Gothamist marked the final week of May with Manhattanhenge, that day of the year when the sun is lined up with streets perfectly. Gothamist wondered if a Harlem minister's suggestion that the way to save Harlem would be to boycott businesses made sense and thought about the many faces of Rudy Giuliani. The hungry Big Apple blog also enjoyed a delicious meal at Bo Ssam and was impressed by a middle school's noble fight against graffiti. And then there was the City Council fight over naming a street after a radical black activist, that prompted a number of verbals fights, including "jokes" of assassination and criticism of Thomas Jefferson.

These kinds of things will happen when a team struggling to find its identity suddenly notches a few quality wins in a row.

The (hopefully) friendly confines. Photo from Warriors official web site.

Well smoke 'em if you got 'em because the Warriors are the proud owners of a three-game winning streak, including a 32-point pasting of the formidable (but decaying) Detroit Pistons on Saturday and last night's impressive fourth quarter comeback win over an up-and-coming Toronto Raptors team. The win against the Pistons, in case you missed it, was as good as the Warriors have played in years. They dominated Detroit from the opening tip, doubling them up in the first quarter and outscoring them in all four frames. Sure, it was a get-away game for the Pistons, the final game of their four-game road trip, and possibly a bit of an ugly stepchild to them after their dismantling of the more high-profile Fakers the night before. But it was huge for the Warriors because it represents the kind of dominating win against a quality opponent (other than the Dallas Mavericks) that hasn't been seen around these parts since the last time the Democrats controlled Congress.

Interview: Matt Costa

SFist interviews Matt Costa

Arts & Entertainment

apple

But I

Canada

computers

Do It

Features

film

Florida

Home Depot

interview

Interviews

Matt Costa

music

Now I

On Friday

sf

Toronto

We Do

emily

What’s the best show you’ve ever played and what made it great?
My favorite my favorite was the first show I ever did which was at a party when I was in the 9th grade in Florida. I like to go into every show hoping that I can somehow recreate a little bit of that same feeling.

What’s your favorite venue to play?
The opera house in Toronto, Ont. Canada.

Where are the best fans?
Home Depot has a good selection.

What’s your favorite song to play?
It changes everyday, the last song I played was the Beatles’ “Why Don’t We Do It In the Road?” On my parents’ piano.

What’s your relationship w/ Apple computers? Are you as big an enthusiast as Emmett?
I had an Apple computer and I really liked it until I left in Amsterdam. Now I check my email bi-monthly and write postcards. Fortunately for Houstinist, Jesus is too-- he is, in fact, moving to the 'burbs where he could hang out with pastor Joel Osteen and his bitchy wife.

Austinist isn't quite feeling the religious vibes, but is feeling the vibe of a Howard Dean visit and Austin City Limits being called the best music show on TV. Meanwhile, the county won't pay for weight reduction surgery anymore so it makes it that much greater a car share service will be set up. And while a historic landmark is getting knocked down, the Austin Film Festival is getting ready.

Gothamist has a taping scandal not involving a high-tech company but the Attorney General and his wife. Which isn't nearly as messed up as something a real-estate broker does (it involves both Satan and poop and do you really need anything else to know whether a story is awesome or not?). And speaking of bad behavior, they also contemplate their public transportation pet peeves.

Which, in a way, is also what SFist is up to this week as they listed some of theirs too. In fact, public transportation weighed heavily this week as their Mayor whines about the public transportation in his town. Elsewhere, their Green Candidate for Congress dances and squirrels attack!

Overseas, Shanghaist missed a track meet but went to the after-party that looked way too cool for something involving track and field and went to a jazz concert where hopefully they went used one of Shanghai's most romantic Metro spots to find love. Not finding love are several political types who ran into all sorts of trouble for a pension scam and all sorts of other nefarious acts. Politicians being arrested for wrongdoing, what is the world coming to?

Parisist, meanwhile, pondered about the beauty of break dancing, how to breathe in all of those smoky French cafes, and all the wonderful Parisian blogs (French version here, bad Google translated version here).

Here's two events that'll bring a bright ding-ding to your day.

Tonight: NewMindSpace, an interactive public art group (one of whose founders writes for our Canadian cousin Torontoist), has put on bubble-blowing parties in New York, an Easter Egg hunt in Toronto, and a pillow fight in New York's Union Square. Tonight, they're bringing the whimsy to the West Coast, with a MUNI Metro Party.

The party starts at 7:59 p.m. at the N Judah 4th and King stop -- and they'll be turning the N into your second childhood -- Legos, dolls, costumes, and a "renegade sound system." They claim they've never had problems with the authorities before, once they realize that they're "partying out of their love of public transit." We're excited to see how this one turns out (not the least of which is that we betcha the partiers'll have to wait at least 20 minutes for the first N to head out of the station).

And on Saturday: Tired of MUNI's restrictive stroller rules? Well, scoot on across the station and check out BART, who's sponsoring the last of their August "kids ride free" Saturdays. Download a pass (or buy one at Safeway), and be at Powell Street at 10 a.m. The first 10,000 riders get Kids Packs filled with anime, manga, and a Pokemon DVD. We can't promise any kind of renegade sound system at this event, but you can't dispute that it'll also be a re-embracing of childhood.

This year, the flutter of butterfly wings could be heard from the A's camp. Nada. Zilch. Nothing. Barry Zito's name would pop occasionally, but without much merit or context. Beane shifted his strategy to last off-season instead, picking up perpetually cranky Milton Bradley and an aging agit-prop artist Frank Thomas to bolster the cheese-whiffing line-up. He added Esteban Loaiza (gulp!) to support the pitching staff. If anything, Beane has foresight. Odds are always in favor of Rich Harden straining an oblique muscle or a hammy or whatever muscle we’ve never heard of, and to miss significant time. The A's receive mega-bonus points when he returns. Moreover, the Kirk Saarloos-Brad Halsey conundrum, a project of deep curiosity to SFist, has actually worked for the better part of selected innings here and there.

Ultimately, Beane's genius for finding the right kind of 'mannish' man to slash the A's into the playoffs will be measured by Milton Bradley's fire. The otherwise light-hitting, vanilla line-up Beane assembles each year, typically has that one white-hot firebrand that carries them after the all-star break. In the past, it was Tejada, and to some extent, Giambi when he was focused on success and not his physique. Today, Bradley is their 4-tool horse who, despite his cantankerous nature, is their best player, and can carry a squad of grown men on his back. Just ask BJ Ryan of Toronto. On Sunday, Bradley took Ryan’s best body blows and wacked a 400-plus foot walk-off bomb over the centerfield fence. What every half-witted prognosticator ever predicted about Bradley’s talents will finally be proven correct this fall-- the dude rules! Plus, the A's own the month of August. After last nights lackluster showing, they are 103-40 during the month of August since 2001. What is that, a .725 winning percentage? Truly off the scale, and why they'll beat the great pretenders from the South.

Earlier SFist was nice enough to provide Chris Mullin with a draft day primer, should he decide to stand pat with picks 9 and 38. Given the possibility that he may not be satisfied with his second consecutive nine-spot, we've outlined the following three possible draft-day trade scenarios.

Picture of Warriors' brain trust (Rowell, Mullin, Cohan) from Tim Roye's Journal.

Trade up. Yeah, but for who? Rumors abound, but none of them sound like moves that will actually help the team. The 2006 draft has some decent players, but no real franchise poppers. Mullin should only trade up in the draft if he needs to do so to get Patrick O'Bryant or Ronnie Brewer, otherwise he's just collecting more pieces that the Warriors already have or don't need.

Trade down. If the Warriors trade down from the nine spot they will probably lose any shot at O'Bryant, but they could still wriggle out of the day with Brewer and/or Rutgers sharpshooter Quincy Douby. This would fill two major holes in the Warriors roster, plus it's just fun to say Douby (pronounced in the Bay Area as "doo-bie").

Trade away. Ninth isn't the greatest position in this year's draft, but it doesn't suck either. We're all for thinking outside the paint and trading this pick away, but only for a stone-cold guaranteed ROI lock. Mullin should absolutely NOT trade this pick away for somebody else's failed project. The only deal Mullin should be looking to snag by using the nine pick as bait is one that brings in a proven, bonafide big man. Package up the pick and one of our huge contractual albatrosses (Dunleavy or Murphy -- nobody will take Foyle) and wrest Kevin Garnett away from the TimberFools.

So to recap for Mullin: make a plan and pick according to that plan. Don't be distracted by other teams waving shiny objects in front your face and don't think you can turn water into wine. Be smart and come out of this with a stronger, more complete, and more focused team. Doesn't sound too hard, right?
