So, of course, we were busy yukking it up with funnyman Merlin Mann last night at the Web 1.0 confab. Silly us, making fun of the 'monetizing,' 'paradigm shifting,' 'game changing' intellects who took a bunch of great ideas from engineers and developers and turned them into marketing juggernauts, with or without a business plan. Let's just say that VRML, FrontPage, Flash, the <blink> tag, dual ISDN and other ante-dot-bomb technologies were rightly pilloried to a delighted audience. And then we crashed the Google party at the Argent Hotel (translation from French to English: "Money place to stay for a night.")
Web Two Point Oh?
Get Ur Geek On
Well, Google is set to announce their Google Talk and Google Desktop v2.0 tomorrow -- but folks have already been using Talk for a few hours now (and the client has been released). Was the leak to create 'buzz,' mayhaps? Danah Boyd doesn't call Google (whom she used to work for) out specifically, but it isn't too hard to figure out who she's talking about when she points out that when your competitor is Microsoft, you shouldn't help them by building tools exclsuively for their platform.
BarCamp 2005
It all started on Thursday night when Andy Smith, celebrating his birthday at the Beauty Bar and wearing a bathrobe, asked if we were going to BarCamp. "Uh, sure," was the reply, not really knowing what we were signing up for. By Friday afternoon we had completely forgotten about it when we got an IM from Min Jung Kim telling us to get ready, as she was leaving for Palo Alto in an hour. So we checked out the Wiki, grabbed our tent, and prepared ourselves for, you know, whatever. Heck, it's not every day you get to pitch a tent in downtown Palo Alto.
Stuff to Do if You're Bored
Make it an evening of art. Drop by Ross Mirkarimi's office at five and check out art by Mohammed Hourian while drinking some wine on Ross's dime. Then check out the long anticipated (at least here at SFist) release of Pet Noir: An Anthology of Strange But True Pet Crimes at Adobe Books starting at 7.
