If you're an A's fan and caught yesterday's ALDS Game 4, we feel your pain. Game 4 took a dramatic turn after Tigers designated hitter (and evil-eye starer) Victor Martinez sent a ball into deep right filed. And, at least to some, fan interference affected the rest of the game, possibly the series.

HuffPo has more:

[...] Martinez hit a disputed home run off left-handed Oakland reliever Sean Doolittle. With the Tigers facing elimination in Game 4 of the ALDS and trailing 4-3 in the seventh inning, Martinez lofted a fly ball to deep right field. A's right fielder Josh Reddick broke for the wall at Comerica Park. As he reached the warning track, he leapt, reaching his glove above the yellow line at the top of the wall.

Then things got interesting.

A pair of fans standing at the railing atop the wall reached out. One touched the ball, deflecting it into the other. After touching both fans, the ball dropped back to the outfield. Reddick immediately pleaded for a call of fan interference. The umpires signaled home run as Martinez circled the bases.

Watch for yourself...

Sure, that would have been an incredible catch. Perhaps too incredible. Possibly impossible. Or not. Upon review, however, umpires failed to give Reddick fan interference. The Tigers then went on to win, 6-8.

Greenpeace crunchies inflated a giant tiger to celebrat International Day of Forests, holding a banner calling attention to one of Indonesia's most noted rainforest destroyers: "APRIL."

“APRIL is Indonesia’s second largest pulp and paper producer and is cutting down the last remaining natural rainforests and tiger habitat to feed its mills.” Said Dr. Amy Moas, Senior Forest Campaigner with Greenpeace.

Mama Sumatran tiger Bahagia, a resident of the Sacramento Zoo, gave birth a little bundle of striped joy named Castro Jr. earlier this month. C.J., as we're calling him now, won't be on public view at the zoo until later this Summer, but thanks to the Internet's largest baby photo repository, we can fawn all over him from the comfort of our desks.

The two-week-old C.J. will rely heavily on his mother for the next three months while he gains strength and figures out how things like paws and teeth work. The cub's father Castro Sr. was recently diagnosed with lymphoma in February and is currently undergoing cat chemo.

C.J. has four older siblings: one sister and three older brothers — one of which recently fathered his own cub at the San Francisco Zoo. Fewer than 500 Sumatran Tigers are believed to exist in the wild on the Indonesian island off the Malaysian Peninsula. Approximately 200 live in zoos around the world.

“The birth of any Sumatran Tiger is a great contribution to this critically endangered species,” Zoo's director Mary Healy said in blog post. “We are especially excited for this birth because it is the first time we have had a camera in the den, allowing zookeepers and veterinarians to keep a close eye on Bahagia and her cub.”

Without further ado, here's that warm, fuzzy video from inside Bahagia's den:

For those of you too skittish to head out to the streets of the Mission or SoMa to celebrate the big Giants win tonight, we've helpfully rounded up some photos of San Franciscans celebrating the city's second World Series title in their own special way.

Two sources tell us they heard the words: "Keep all marked units off Mission. They've taken over," come across the SFPD scanner, which is just a little frightening, although we can't immediately confirm the veracity of that one. Judging by the photos, celebratory demonstrations in the Mission were limited, but amplified by the district's social media presence. A bonfire outside of Beauty Bar at 19th and Mission was instagram'ed an estimated 12 million times.

Two fans were reportedly injured jumping through another Mission bonfire at Valencia and 17th Streets:

On Market Street, celebrating fans flipped a truck on its side near the intersection with Sixth Street. Closer to the Powell Street Cable Car turnaround, fans were spotted surfing on top of Muni buses. ABC7's Lillian Kim, has a video report from the ground:

The Castro, meanwhile, bucked the trend and commemorated the win by tee-peeing the neighborhood's overhead wires. Likewise, the Lower Haight decorated the streets with biodegradable paper products

Local amateur videographer Diane Harrigan shot the celebration footage below, mostly downtown around Market Street. Notable moments: Hacky sack player at 0:10 second mark, dancing homeless person at 0:15 seconds, excessive high-fiving around 0:25, Muni bus roof dancing 0:30, return of crazy homeless dancer at 1:00 mark:

The San Francisco Giants took game four 4-3 to sweep the Detroit Tigers in the World Series Sunday night. What started as a shootout through the middle innings turned into a stalemate by the end of the ninth, before Ryan Theriot scored off a Scutaro drive to center field in the top of the tenth to put the Giants back on top. Sergio Romo closed three outs to win the Giants' second World Championship title in three years.

Reverend Pence started the Giants offense in the second inning, running home from first off of Brandon Belt's triple. The Tigers' offense finally woke up after 20 scoreless innings, when Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run shot over the right field wall at Comerica Park in the third. The next couple innings would be a shootout in Detroit.

With Scutaro on base in the sixth, Posey drove a homer just inside the foul pole in left field to put the Giants back on top. It was Posey's first home run of this postseason:

Your browser does not support iframes.

Delmon Young homered for the Tigers in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 3-3 game. After the Young's long ball, a deep foul ball from Johnny Peralta threatened another run. Another big hit by Peralta looked like it'd get out of the park, but fell short of the wall and right into the warm embrace of Gregor Blanco's glove.

3-3 going into the seventh. Scherzer still at work, but showing some signs of wear. Batting as a DH, Theriot grounds one to shortstop, to put Blanco on second. Theriot's sacrifice would put himself and Scherzer back in their respective dugouts. The Tigers bullpen would keep the score even 3-3 through the stretch.

On his 102nd pitch, Matt Cain struck out Prince Fielder to turn over the side and bring up Marco Scutaro in the eighth. Scutaro walked to first with Sandoval, who only has a single in game four, up to bat. (Fun fact: Scherzer was the first pitcher to strike out Sandoval in this World Series.) Panda clipped a little one right to Prince Fielder at first base and the tigers would back Scutaro into a corner to tag him out between the bases. Two outs, no runners and Buster Posey swung for a disappointing strikeout.

Bottom of the eighth, Jeremy Affeldt's power goatee took the mound. Another fun fact: Affeldt and his wife recently had their third child. After the birth of each of his first two kids, Affeldt's current team won the World Series. So Larisa Affeldt has magical baseball ovaries, basically.

Affeldt walked one to bring up an intimidating Miguel Cabrera with no outs. Larisa's ovaries willing, Affeldt struck out Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Delmon Young to head into the ninth inning.

Your browser does not support iframes.

Tigers closer Phil Coke took over in the top fo the ninth, unleashing like a thousand tweets about "mounds of coke," probably. Hunter Pence, who always looks like he's ready to take off running whether or not he hits the ball, was sent back to the dugout. Coke would catch Brandon Belt and Gregor Blanco swinging to close the top of the ninth in order and bring up a chance for the Tigers to send the series back to San Francisco in game five.

With one out, Jhonny Peralta sent another threatening bomb deep to center. Angel Pagan would get his glove under it to bring up a 3-3 game with one out left before extra innings:

Your browser does not support iframes.

Santiago Casilla took over to try and strike out Omar Infante, but beaned him in the left hand instead. With a runner on first, the Giants would take it to the tenth, throwing out an easy hit to shortstop.

Designated Hitter Ryan Theriot was looking to drive the World Championship trophy home safely when he got to second on Brandon Crawford's sacrifice. Pagan struck out, but Scutaro's single to center gave Theriot plenty of time to crank out run number four and put the Giants on top.

Bottom of the tenth, Sergio Romo heads to the mound to finish the series in Detroit. With his usual bearded aplomb, Sergio Romo catches Miguel Cabrera looking to close out the tenth inning and bringing San Francisco its second World Championship title.

Your browser does not support iframes.

Back home in the streets around AT&T Park, the Mission, the Marina and everywhere in between, the impromptu celebrations are underway. Be prepared for a wonderfully hungover Monday morning and try not to set too much stuff on fire out there...

Hunter Pence got to work early during game three of the World Series in Detroit. Pence stole second base and another free Doritos taco for America off of a walk to first base. Gregor Blanco would send Pence home to open up a 1-0 game in the second inning. Brandon Crawford would score Blanco on a two-out single and by the end of game three, the Tigers would be scoreless for a total of 18 innings.

Your browser does not support iframes.

Detroit had a shot at breaking Ryan Vogelsong when they loaded the bases in the fifth with only one out. The average heart rate of sports bar patrons around San Francisco went up as they held their breath through two outs. With Lincecum warming up, Vogelsong struck out Quintin Berry and held on to close out the inning on Miguel Cabrera's fly to shortstop. At least one Detroit sports writer called the inning, "one of the most disheartening at-bats of the series."

Top of the sixth. Hunter Pence's crazy legs cannot be contained to the batter's box. Despite two outs already on the board, Pence scrambled to first as Prince Fielder extended his Embarrassing Game streak to two in a row.

Lincecum takes over in the sixth to finish up the 15th scoreless inning for the Detroit Tigers.

Top of the eighth, Sandoval knocks one just short of the back wall of Comerica Park, putting him up on second. Buster Posey, who hasn't been doing so much in this World Series, but we can't help but love him anyway, struck out. Facing two outs and the prospect of leaving a big cuddly panda bear stranded on second base, Pence swung one out to left, but couldn't beat the throw to first.

Bottom of their eighth, Brandon Crawford makes the first easy out. Joe Buck, probably trying to force a longer series for his bosses up in the network's skybox, jinxed it for Crawford by pointing out the shortstop had been having an impressive error-less streak. With Joe Buck's annoying voice burning his ears, Crawford bobbled the next play to first that would have closed out the inning. Lincecum caught Andy Dirks swinging to work the Giants out of the error and keep the Tigers scoreless.

Top of the ninth, one out. Sanchez, in as designated hitter in the American League park, couldn't get anything working. Gregor Blanco strikes out and has a few words with the umpire on his way to the dugout.

Bottom of the ninth, 2012 Bearded Closer Sergio Romo takes the mound with a hungry look in his eye:

Blanco gets his out back with an impressive effort running down a ball deep to the warning track in left field. Second out was a fly to Pagan in left-center. Two outs and no Tigers on base, Omar Infante stretches a two-strike count with a couple foul balls. After a little chat with Posey, Infante whiffs the third strike.

With the shutout, the Giants could close out the Championship in Comerica Park tomorrow. Matt Cain starts game four. First pitch at 5 p.m. PST.

World Series 2012: Giants Take On Tigers In Game 1

And with that, it's all comes down to this.
And with that, it's all comes down to this. Tonight, the Giants take on the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. Justin Verlander and Barry Zito will square off in Game 1, starting at 5:07 (PT) at AT&T Park. How important is Game 1? If you're supersistious, it could be. ESPN reports that "[t]he winner of Game 1 has won eight of nine and 13 of the last 15 World Series, " adding, "[t]here have been 103 best-of-7 World Series, and the winner of Game 1 has gone on to win the series 63.1 percent of the time."

So, not that critical. But still, a home-field for Game 1 is an advantage. We'll take what we can get.

Right now, the area around AT&T Park in SoMa is packed with fans on both sides. Those of you driving to the game? You are fools. You have no right to honk and shout out of your car windows. Calm thyselves. You knew better. Those of you who live in the area? We feel your joy/pain. We live by the park as well. It's an electric feeling. We can only hope that, when the Giants win later in the series, hooligans don't set fire to our compost bin again as they did in 2010. That stank. Literally.

Well, it's time to turn on KTVU 2 for the game. We hope that the FOX announcers don't fuck it up. They always do. If you're at work and your boss has not provided your with a television, or allowed you to leave early for the game, you are working for the devil. Clearly. Our apologies. Anyway, game starts in an hour. Prepare yourselves.

If you have any pics you'd like to share with SFist readers (of the game, fandom, your cat dressed as a Hunter Pence, your empty onion dip bowl, et al.), please tag them with 'sfist' on Flickr or email them to to us.

As always, and though it goes without saying, go Giants.

Giants vs. Tigers: Rival City Mayors Throw Shade

It's on.
It's on.

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and Detroit Mayor David Bing wasted no time snatching off each other's proverbial wigs prior to Game 1 of the Giants-vs.-Tigers World Series. "The San Francisco Giants are truly the comeback kids—this team never quits," Lee said in a written statement. "The city of Detroit also has a reputation for making an impressive comeback, although I fear I won't get to see this firsthand, as the Giants are bound to win the World Series."

Grrl.

Mayor Bing too didn't hold back. "The Giants have had great success, but we've already proven we can handle any team out of the Bay Area," Bing declared, while referencing to the Tigers' smack down over the Oakland A's in the ALDS earlier this month (and making a low-blow comparison of Oakland to San Francisco.)

The two mayors have also made friendly (albeit boring) bets. If the Giants win, Bing must come to San Francisco to play baseball with youths in the Junior Giants program "and tour various companies in the city." (And by "tour various companies," we think he means "tour Twitter.") But if the Tigers win (chortle), Lee must fly to Detroit to "tour the factory that produces the Chevy Volt, the car Lee uses as his official city vehicle."

These two obviously need an Absolut cocktail in the Interior Illusions Lounge before it gets any uglier.

Game 1 of the World Series starts at 5:07 p.m. today at AT&T Park.

What in the huh? Are these people beating tigers with bags of trash? How are the tigers not mauling them to death? And where is the location of this horrible place? (According to Gawker, it's a tiger Theravada Buddhist temple in Thailand where, it seems, people are encouraged to be mean to animals.) This insanity can best be summed up with the following expression. You're a weird, mean place, world.

Martha fills a gap left after the infamous Tatiana mauled a visitor on Christmas Day in 2007 and Tony, the Zoo's last Siberian tiger, was put down last summer. She also used to go by the name "Shasta", so give her some time to adjust to the new digs.
In a jarring move sure to send local drag queens running for the glass pipe, the San Francisco Zoo plans to rename a new Siberian tiger "Martha." Which wouldn't be so criminal if its given name, "Shasta," weren't so rad. SF Appeal reports: "The 10-year-old, 295 lb white Siberian tiger, currently named 'Shasta,' has been renamed Martha, after SFZS Board member Barnaby Conrad III successfully bid $20K to name her in honor of his wife, Martha Sutherland."

While that's all well and good, and we tip our hat to Mrs. Sutherland and Edward Albee's masterpiece, the name Martha never gave us an earworm like this. Also, why pay loads of cash to renane an animal, especially after someone who's still alive? Zoo animals are not benches or plaques.

Afternoon Palate Cleanser: Big Cat Christmas!

Courtesy of Big Cat Rescue comes this adorable holiday video featuring tigers, lions, and a baby leopard chewing open some Xmas gifts! You know, we meant to get into the whole "It's Got to Be the Morning After" thing earlier but forgot to do it in all the sports hurly-burly. So, yes, the title comes from the theme song to The Poseidon Adventure by Maureen McGovern. And yes, we're old. So, anyways, if you want to check out the actual song that gave the column it's name and get all "I Love the '70's" with it, check out the video.

PS- and yesterday's It's It's Got to Be the Morning After, Bitch was indeed a shout-out to Ms. Spears, y’all.

49ers 20 Cardinals 17- The opening game of the NFL season is like Christmas and watching the game and checking out the team is like opening presents. If the Raiders are the present that comes from your crazy aunt Sadie who sends you something completely crazy every year, the Niners this year was the present from your cool uncle who kept on telling you for months how great the present was. Well, the packaging might have looked pretty-- the team wore their Old Skool unis, Nolan was decked out in his suit, and ESPN found just which cheerleader to focus in just such a way, the present was kind of meh. All those shiny new offensive toys the Niners were supposed to play with didn’t really work. Gore never got on track, passes were dropped, and Smith didn't look very accurate. On the other hand, Smith had the big play of the game, scrambling for a long run with about a minute left in the game to get a first down. Oh, yeah, the Niners did win with a stirring last minute comeback, but this game was like sitting down for what was billed as an action-packed thriller but getting a slow, character driven movie instead, more Jackie Brown than Pulp Fiction. Still, a win is a win is a win and this is what they call in the biz as a win. Nicely done Red & Gold.

In Raiders news, they finally got around to signing JaMarcus Russell. Nothing like losing to the Detroit Lions to make you see your senses. The deal is the biggest rookie contract in NFL history- $60 million for six years and about half of it guaranteed. The 2008 season is looking up already, Raiders fans.

Dbacks 5 Giants 3- At an intimate gathering among some of their closest friends, the Giants bullpen blew yet another game in yet another fun-filled fashion. Up 3-2 in the ninth, Brad Hennessey gave up a lead-off double, threw a wild pitch, and then walked another batter after getting a couple of outs. With two on and two outs, kiss it goodbye-- Arizona's Jeff Salazar hit a three run home run to take the lead. The Enchanter, btw, was all set to get the win but was Cained yet again.

As 9 M's 3- The A's regained a measure of respect after their Lost Weekend by taking their frustrations out of the free, free-falling (come 'on, everybody sing!) Damage was done by Kurt "Not Ichiro" Suzuki who hit a grand slam and Joe Blanton who won his fifth game out of six. The Mariners have now lost fourteen out of sixteen games and, well, ouch. Thanks to their collapse, as well as the Tigers, we have them to thank for the Yankees getting into the playoffs. Thanks guys.
