Protesters Would Like China Out of Tibet, Please

This was the scene several minutes ago at 7th and Market where 70 or so people were marching for Tibetan liberation, screaming, "Shame on Chinese government," etc. Bringing up the rear: a Tibetan-flag-draped U-Haul truck. See below.

Tibet Protesters Shouting Up Market Street

As we type, a gaggle of about 100 protesters are marching toward Civic Center shouting things like "Shame on Communist China," and "No More Torture in Tibet," and "Religious Freedom in Tibet," and a series of other chants that are thoroughly confusing most of the assembled marchers.

We believe this is related to an incident yesterday in which the Chinese consulate in SF met with Portland's mayor Sam Adams about Portland's declaring today, March 10th, "Tibet Awareness Day."

So anyway, Happy Tibet Awareness Day everyone.

Dalai Lama Visits SF Soup Kitchen

After speaking in Berkeley on Saturday, His Holiness the Dalai Lama visited Martin's Soup Kitchen, which primarily serves food to the homeless. Protected by heavy security and traveling in a long armored motorcade, the Dalai Lama served pasta and spoke to some of the less fortunate locals.

According to the Seattle Examiner, "[h]e put on an apron and served plates of pasta as he joked with the homeless that it was a relief it was to be among rich people who listen to his every word." The exiled leader of Tibet also told soup kitchen clients, "Me too, homeless person."

Dalai Lama to Cause Traffic Nightmare

On Saturday, the arrival of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, along with an Earth Day festival and "special farmer's market celebrating the elimination of plastic bags" (chortle), means that you'll want to stay as far away from Berkeley streets as possible. For his visit, the city will shutdown Allston Way between Milvia Street and Martin Luther King, Jr., Way from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. At 2 p.m. he'll be at the Greek Theatre, and at 3:45 he'll chat at the Berkeley Community Theater. Also, according to SFGate, "expanded bike parking will be available at Civic Center Park, and the city's car-share fleet will be relocated to the south side of Center Street, east of Milvia, for easier access." What's more, the Earth Day Festival is scheduled to part hard from noon to 5 p.m. at Civic Center Park, 2151 Martin Luther King, Jr. Taking public transit is strongly encouraged. You've been warned.

Yesterday in San Francisco, a free Tibet protest march was held, ending at the Chinese consulate. The protest marked the 50th anniversary of the failed uprising that sent the Dalai Lama into exile. (It seems like eons since we've had a pro-Tibet protest, doesn't it?)

Anti-China Protester Falls From Chinese Consulate Roof In SF

Oops. A lady who staged a faux hanging from the roof of the Chinese consulate in San Francisco today "to protest human rights abuses in Tibet" was taken to a hospital after she buckled and plummeted. Nyendak Wangden, 22, of SF suffered non-life-threatening injuries.She was whisked away to a local hospital for treatment. Protesters at the consulate, however, claim her rope was cut. Today's protest comes two days before the Beijing Olympic opening ceremonies.

Former Marin resident and current insane person, Sharon Stone, made the following Jerry Falwell-ish quip the other day.

They're not being very nice to the Dali Lama, who's a good friend of mine ... I'm not happy about how the Chinese are treating the Tibetans, I don't think anyone should be unkind to anyone else ... All these earthquakes and stuff happened and I thought, 'Is that karma?' When you are not nice, bad things happen to you.

Interesting. Is this woman severely retarded? or just mean? or both? Please advise.

Pretty sneaky, Gavin.

The torch, as of 2 p.m., is over at Pine and Van Ness. The run is taking place over there now. Only security people are there and lucky pedestrians get to see it in action. Lots of Bay Quacker boat/buses near the flame.

Confusion blanketing the city today. This torch route is being made up as it goes along. Very San Francisco.

Marina Man Wearing "Free Tibet" Sign Commits Suicide

According to KCRA 3, a 64-year-old man with a "Free Tibet" strung around his neck killed himself "late Monday night outside the Marina District home of his former landlord." It seems that the still unidentified man used a gun to take his own life.

Described as an "Asian male," police spokesman Sgt. Wilfred Williams says that the man "'appeared to have committed suicide' at about 11:46 p.m. in the 2200 block of Beach Street." Also:

The man had recently been evicted from his business, located in another part of the city, and was also recently divorced, Williams said. Apart from the "Free Tibet" sign, there was "no further evidence" linking the apparent suicide "with any political cause," Williams said.

The case is currently under investigation.
