The University of Michigan's Transportation Research Institute has just published a study on the effectiveness of a new method to reduce greenhouse gas emission in California . While it may seem strange that an out-of-state university is concerning itself in California's affairs, we'll take it: the findings are pretty encouraging.

April, the Last R-month before September is going full throttle and our gorging on Dungeness crab and oysters, combined with the approaching swimsuit season lead us to search for a regular form of exercise. Being slackers, we know that even with a $60 a month membership, once the first week is up, we'll only hit the gym when our water boiler blows. So after contemplating joining a cheaper out-of-town YMCA to visit the Presidio YMCA as a guest, our thrifty mind saw the light at the University of San Francisco Koret Health and Recreation Center.

More Mission woe -- over the weekend, there was a drive-by shooting on 26th and Mission on Friday 8:30 p.m., a stabbing at that same corner a day later, and a shooting at 19th and Guerrero. Kamala Harris came by to check things out (and get a burrito). In other weekend crime news, a man stabbed his ex-girlfriend in the neck in the Haight at the McDonalds on Stanyan, and three men were stabbed in a bar in the Bayview area. There were also two shootings at Divisadero and Eddy (the cops think gang-related).
