Disappointing news for anyone hoping to get aall their chintzy holiday shopping done in one place this weekend (guilty!). The Examiner brings us a progress report from the Metreon Target store this morning. The pearly white Minnesotan chain has not yet to started construction on the 85,000 square-foot store — that will begin sometime in January after the Westfield folks wrap up their part of the construction. Assuming everything goes according to plan the new store will be open by next October, just in time for the 2012 holiday rush.
Metreon Target Will Open In Time For Next Holiday Season
Missoni For Target Madness In Full Gear!
You may have heard, via the big national ad campaign, that iconic Italian design house Missoni released their line of inexpensive clothing and home goods today at Target. Though we do not yet have a Target within city limits, design- and bargain-fiends have been clamoring to buy something -- anything! -- at the nearest store. The products went live on the store's website this morning, and demand for the stuff crashed the whole site -- though it appears to be up and running again [Ed. Note: actually, attempts to purchase things are delayed, and even small items now appear "on backorder"]. Also, greedy society that we are, people have already turned around and put the stuff up for sale on eBay, at a significant markup, and PEOPLE ARE BUYING IT.
San Francisco's Other Target Store Coming to Masonic and Geary
While fans of Method soap and Paul Frank bedding patiently await the arrival of San Francisco's first Target store, still slated to open in the Metreon sometime in the fall of 2012, the San Francisco Planning Commission has approved a permit to build another location of the discount retailer in the largely deserted City Center shopping complex at Geary and Masonic.
Ed Lee Would Like a Word With Target Execs
Temporary Mayor Ed Lee is looking out for the concerns of San Francisco's budget-minded and politically-conscious shoppers. You'll remember that the city's excitement for house-brand hand soaps, Paul Frank bedding and one-off designer clothing lines quickly fizzled with the revelation that the Minnesota-based chain donated funds to an anti-Gay politician. As the Metreon remodel moves forward, making way for the big red bullseye, Ed Lee tells the Bay Area Report that he has requested a meeting with Target's top execs to discuss their political contributions.
Oakland/Emeryville Target Now Open for Business
Oaklanders have a new place to shop for discount housewares and Justin Timberlake fashions as Target opens a new store on the Oakland/Emeryville border, at 1555 40th Street. The big ribbon cutting happened Tuesday, as Oakland North reports, and the place was open as of yesterday -- but the grand opening event is technically on Sunday, March 6.
Target All Set to Move Forward in the Metreon
Gavin Newsom will have a long legacy no doubt, but fans of Method soap products and Paul Frank bedding might remember him most for putting aside the anti-gay controversy and pushing through all the paperwork to approving San Francisco's first Target store. In an announcement yesterday, Gavin described the Minnesota-based chain with all the wide-eyed wonder you might expect from a parent who's expecting, calling the Metreon "the perfect place for a new, urban-centered Target that will bring jobs, smart development and an exciting and unique retail destination." We're not sure how unique it is, but the diaper prices seem reasonable.
Target Dumping Hazardous Waste In Bay Area?
First, Target came under fire for making an ill-advised contribution to an anti-gay politician. Now, according to SF Appeal, the retailer has been getting rid of hazardous waste in the Bay Area. SF Appeal reports that "a civil lawsuit was filed alleging that 240 Target Stores in California have been illegally disposing of hazardous consumer products that were returned or damaged in order to avoid expensive disposal fees."
Target "Genuinely Sorry" for Controversial Political Donation
Aiming to ease the ruckus raised over Target's donation to Minnesota Forward, a conservative committee that ran TV ads for anti-gay Republican candidate Tom Emmer, the company's CEO apologized publicly today for the, er, gaffe. AP reports: "Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel wrote employees to say the discount retailer was "genuinely sorry" over the way a $150,000 contribution to MN Forward donation played out. Steinhafel said Target would set up a review process for future political donations."
National Day of Protest Against Target
See, this is why we can't have nice things. Target, as SFist previously reported, financially backed an anti-gay politician (via Minnesota Forward) to the sum of $150,000. Now queer activists would like concerned citizens to gather at their local Target store on, uh, either August 14 and/or August 15 (psst, gay activism isn't known for being anal, organizational skills-wise). They even have t-shirts you can wear to show your disapproval for glorious, wonderful, we-secretly-still-want-to-go-there-to-buy-a-bunch-of-stuff-even-though-they-made-a-bad-decision Target
Target's Financial Backing of Anti-Gay Politician
by Matt Baume
Here's something that may give fans of San Francisco's impending Target invasion some pause: the company's financial support for an anti-gay Republican politician whose friends include a "kill-the-gays" Christian rock singer...
Target Community Meeting Held
"If they don't approve the Target, my wife might go on a killing spree," jokes @laughinghyena13. "Watch out SF!"
Community Meeting to Yell About Proposed Target
The greatest thing that will ever happen to San Francisco, Target, will have a community meeting held in its esteemed honor on Wednesday, July 21. The Facebook invite chirps, "Target is definitely interested in taking over the old abandoned Mervyn's space in the desolate plaza at Geary and Masonic. But what does this mean for traffic, pedestrians, and bikes? How will it affect the plans to Fix Masonic?" Traffic, pedestrians, and bikes? Deal with it, mow 'em down, and make 'em drive cars. It's Target! It is glorious. Submit to more stuff.
Plan for CityPlace Mall on Mid-Market Moves Forward, Might Include Target
Yes, eager shoppers, you may soon be able to get Giada DiLaurentiis bakeware and other Target bargains right in the heart of S.F. The Planning Commission yesterday voted 5-2 to approve the CityPlace Mall project, which is planned as a "value retail" center that might have Target as an anchor tenant. (Target is also looking at Geary and Masonic.) Because the approval was still up in the air, the developer has not yet signed deals with retailers, but those names are sure to come out soon.
Target Stabbing Suspect Lost Custody of Son
A recent divorce and losing custody of a child are a couple of reasons that might have exacerbating Antioch resident Layla Trawick's bipolarism and schizophrenia, prompting her to go on a stabbing spree a Los Angeles Target. According to Trawick's half brother, Tim Helton, the attack as out of character for her. "Being aggressive was not her, she was pretty damn docile," Helton said. "She might not have all been there upstairs sometimes, but she was never aggressive."
Target Stabbing Suspect Sanity-Estranged, Says Mom
Yesterday, Antioch resident Layla Trawick, 34, went on a stabbing spree at a Target store in Southern California. She sliced four customers, including a woman holding a baby, before being subdued and arrested. This was a random act. And, according to her mother, Trawick suffers from mental illness. Obviously.
Style-ist: Monsieur Gaultier est Ariveé à Tar-jay (Or, A Tale of Two Targets)
by Chloé Harris
Say what you will about the wicked evil of big-box stores in downtown SF. If Target were open at the Metreon, we could trot over there on our gloriously glossy, eco-friendly Marni platforms (a recent score from Jeremy’s) rather than pollute our way...
Target Coming To SF This Month -- For Three Days
Nothing short of a blue-balling tease that will surely leave the city aching for days, Target plans on setting up shop in SF. Yesterday, the chain store revealed plans to open an outdoor store in Mint Plaza from December 11 to 13, which, according to SF Examiner, will "sav[e] residents from having to venture to the suburbs to access some of the bargain retailer’s holiday items."
Target Coming to Metreon?
In what could be the story of the century, a Target store might be coming to one of the floors at the Metreon.
Felon Charges Against Tiger Mauling Victim Amritpal "Paul" Dhaliwal?
Paul Dhaliwal--Christmastime tiger attack victim, and currently in the process of trying to sue the city of San Francisco over said attack--might be looking at some time in the clink. After Dhaliwal went on a shoplifting spree last month, which included the brazen act of stuffing of two Wii controllers down his pants, San Leandro cops are recommend seven felony charges be handed down to him. According to the San Leandro police spokesman Lt. Tom Overton (via the San Jose Mercury News):
