An early morning apartment blaze injured one resident who was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. BCN (via SF Appeal), reports,: "At 2:57 a.m., crews responded to reports of a fire at 670 Monterey Blvd., which is between Foerster and Gennessee streets." The cause of the fire in under investigation. [SF Appeal]
Glen Park/Sunnyside Fire Injures One
Sunnyside Conservatory Grand Reopening, December 5
Known as San Francisco's "other conservatory," the Sunnyside Conservatory underwent a dramatic renovation in 2009. And come Saturday, December 5, the newly refurbished conservatory will be open for business, complete with a kickoff party featuring conservatory tours, a ribbon cutting ceremonies, and... high tea! Best of all, it's just a few blocks away from the Glen Park BART station, and easily accessible if you take a ride on the Muni #23 Monterey.
SFist Interviews: Sunnyside Blogger Steve Robles
As the southwestern neighborhoods of San Francisco continue to gain momentum in the public eye through the Western Neighborhoods Project, violent freeway proximity crime, fairly "reasonable" home prices, and stellar coverage from SFist, it's no surprise that neighborhood blogs are starting to emerge from places most San Franciscans never thought existed (or believed were in Daly City).
A Newish Kind of Parking Ticket
For those of you who live in neighborhoods like the Sunnyside, Glen Park, Bernal Heights, and other places many San Francisco residents don't know exist, beware. A new kind of parking ticket is being issued and people are not happy about it.
City College Groper Still on the Loose
Ingleside Police Station has issued a (slightly belated) warning to the Sunnyside neighbors of City College. Two incidences of sexual battery have occurred in the last month or so (November 26 and December 2) on the pedestrian bridge near Geneva and Ocean Avenues. Both attacks happened at around 6 p.m., smack dab in the middle of commute hours. There was also a December 8th attack that may or may not be related. It occurred at Ocean Avenue and Lee Street.
Action in the Sunnyside: House Explosion
Sunnyside, famous for its collapsing houses, falling trees, naughty neighbors, and proximity to Daly City, was the site of an explosion that rocked the hood at around 7:45 Monday night. The explosion happened in the garage of 108 Congo, which four young brothers who "fix cars" (according to a neighbor) called home. Several other people share the rest of the house. While there are some residents still in the hospital, no life-threatening injuries have been reported. If you're in the area, go say hi to SFist favorite, Claudine Wong. (She's wearing leather today.)
Blocker: 500 Monterey
Monterey Blvd. isn’t quite the time warp we’ve seen elsewhere around town—we’re thinking of Mission in the Excelsior; we’re also thinking of Amethyst in Diamond Heights. But just the same, it’s clear that few things have changed in recent years (decades?) on this Sunnyside thoroughfare between Edna and Foerster.
Something else is apparent as well: Several businesses here go out of their way to not let us forget what street we’re on. Monterey Cleaners operates its own plant. Monterey Auto Service is an official brake and lamp adjusting station. Immediate neighbors Monterey Pizza and Monterey Salon ought to join forces and offer some sort of meat lovers’ pedicure special. Monterey Blvd. proudly wears its status as Official Business District of Sunnyside like a big blue #1 ribbon at the county fair.
Friendly Neighbors and Restored Power
Oh, the joys of electricity. We in our satellite Sunnyside SFist office had been without it since 8:43 this morning. Power was finally restored at 4:20 (hot!). We immediately plugged in our computer and iPhone and powered up. We couldn't believe all that we missed today! Britney losing her kids, Brazil losing some alligators, Gay tax breaks - wow!
Before and After Storm Shot
(Before we begin, we should point out that all of this rain is very good for us. That said, it is our God-given right as Californians to go clinically insane over the slightest change in weather patterns. So: %@#%^W$&^&!)
Listing of the Week: 401 Marietta Drive (Miraloma Park)
We were out for a leisurely weekend walk up to Tower Market from our abode in the Sunnyside. Instead of heading straight up Teresita, we decided to do something a little different and detour onto Marietta Drive. ‘Tis true, we live life on the edge.
R.I.P. Queen of Mean
Although the billionaire hotelier once allegedly (the help is never a reliable source) uttered the words "only the little people pay taxes," Leona Helmsley today paid her biggest tax bill of all, breathing her last breathe in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Bring in Those Cans, San Francisco
We (sort of) hate to say "we told you so," but it looks like our obsession with the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association's focus on trash cans was just the tip of the iceberg on the garbage can tip.
Bravery and a Breakfast Sandwich
You are all heroes in our book, and we will forever call May 19th “KubSvalCha Day” and celebrate it every year with an egg sandwich.
SF's Garbage Like LA's? No!
And now for a little garbage-related news this side of the bridge:
Curbed SF Gets Its Revenge
You know, sometimes maybe it's just better to rent -- a local family attempting to restore their Sunnyside/Glen Parkish area extreme-fixer-upper accidentally slid the house off its foundation and it collapsed into a neighbor's house.
