Ex-New Yorkers in S.F. love to scoff at what San Franciscans consider "crowded" on Muni and BART trains, given how much more civil, spacious, and temperature controlled things are aboard public transit here compared to there. But, of course, the people of Beijing can laugh at us all, because this is what a Beijing subway looks like on a typical morning.

This appears to be Xi'erqi station, and was shot last week, and you can see the ridiculous process of people fighting their way off the train as a horde barely waits to fight their way on, and then the train can hardly get moving because of all the people crammed in and blocking doors, which is only slightly helped by subway attendants (in yellow) who shove the last people onto the train, and yank some others off (for reasons that are unclear).

And the next time you're on Muni at rush hour clutching a pole near a door while the whole middle of the train is barely full, shove in for god's sake.

Phase I fixed the electrical lines in the underground from the Embarcadero to the Church Station and Phase 2 will replace the electrical lines from Church Station to West Portal.

How will this affect you, the commuter? Well, for those of you riding the M,L, or K lines, it'll mean having to take MUNI buses at night to get you from the Van Ness station to West Portal or vice versa. So, if you are going from the Embarcadero to wherever the M,L, or K train takes you to, you'll be going from the Embarcadero to the Van Ness Station as you normally would, but then you'll have to hop on a bus that will take you from Van Ness to West Portal and from West Portal you'll hop back on the Metro. Same thing in the opposite direction

Sucks to be you.

This all starts tonight and will affect riders riding from 9 PM til 7 AM. A shuttle bus is expected to run every six minutes.

The First Rule of NextBus: There is no NextBus

Get ready to throw a cow-sized steak on the OMG WTF barbecue, because we've got Muni news that'll make your socks go up and down. They've had 'em since December. (The diesel busses are getting hooked up soon, too.) They've been transmitting data for months now. Certainly, MUNI or BART aren't perfect, and the Caltrain is still a little too far away to be useable on a whim, but most of us have the option of getting to work or going out for the evening on buses, little light trains, or subways. How great is that? Plus, MUNI buses in particular are a good way to see the city in all its glory too (SFist is partial to the 22 Fillmore for scenery- and people-watching).

That makes this contest even a better deal! Brought to you by the folks who provide those weird "TransitLink" readers on the MUNI trains and BART stations that no one seems to use (yet), they're giving away an iPod a month (and one lucky dog wins a bike) just for agreeing to take public transportation at least one day a week. For those of you who just bought your August FastPasses, what are you waiting for? For those of you who drive places, c'mon, you can pay the $1.25 and take the 1 California or the J Church home one day a week. You know, you might even like it better than waiting for that elusive left arrow green light at Franklin and Market.

See ya on the train. Don't forget to take your transfer.
