Week Around The -ists

While SFist cringed at the fatal dose of crime littering the Bay Area, it found solace in Hillary Clinton's San Francisco campaign headquarters opening, which featured loads of exposed mammary glands. In other news, SF Taxi Commission ruled that Satan's cab must keep its (in)famous medallion number, 666; and in an un-fashion-forward frenzy, San Francisco Fashion Week (chortle) bars bloggers from covering and getting smashed at their shows and parties, respectively. Also, they found a picture displaying the woes of cruising in a tacky limo on the streets of San Francisco. more ›

Week Around The -ists

Banner week for SFist as the site's new editor introduced himself -- hooray for Brock! While the NY Times weighed in on SF's mayoral race, only SFist had the hard-hitting latest on candidate/activist Josh Wolf. Coverage of a protest vs. gentrification spawned a fantastic debate amongst SFist's readers. Finally, from the sublime to the ridiculous: video of a man that confused a Board of Supes meeting with "open mic night" and sang a custom version of Madonna's "Borderline" to a much-beleaguered board member. more ›

Week In -ists

Week In -ists

We don't know about where you are, but it seems like spring can't decide whether or not to happen. Some days are warm, some days are cold, and sometimes you aren't sure which. Baseball may have started up (and soccer/football winding down) but it still seems cold out there. Unless it's not. Anyways, onto the -ists. more ›

Craftwork Gets Wired

Craftwork Gets Wired

We may be crafty, but that doesn't mean we don't enjoy spending hours in front of a TV with some good video games once and a while. We'd love to tell you that we spent most of our childhood knee deep in crayons and paper mache, covered in finger paint, but we grew up in the suburbs of Jersey and in-between trips to the mall we played video games. Zelda, Mario Brothers, Pitfall, Pole Position, X-men, we like to think those pixilated masterpieces influenced our crafty minds. Sure, we can get with some Wii, but when it comes down to it, we prefer 8 bit graphics. So we were thrilled to see this crocheted Atari set on Craft's blog yesterday, and even more giddy when we saw the TV with Pitfall on the screen. We did some digging, and found some more art and crafts inspired by video games we thought you should see. What a wonderful marriage of two things we love. The amazing crocheted Atari above and the TV below were both created by Christine Domanic. As Craft mentions in their post, Christine also has an Etsy shop and starting in May she will be doing custom orders for any Atari game you'd like to have crocheted. Pretty fantastic. more ›

And the Winner Is....

And the Winner Is....

The San Francisco Film Critics Circle announced their season ending yesterday, something of which we are constantly told could mean something when it comes to the Oscars. The idea, we guess, being that these awards are like the NCAA brackets: Movie A wins the SF Flim Critics and movie B wins the LA Film Critics award, then they go off to meet the winner of the New York Critics Awards with the winner being the front-runner for Oscar gold. Or something like that. more ›

Staggering Through Fog

Following his doctor’s strict advice, Barrespondent Drew continues to get all lit up a few times a week and sober up long enough to scribble out a review of the only place he remembers going. At least we think it was a doctor. He had a white coat on… more ›

The Bay Area Is CopyFighting

The Bay Area Is CopyFighting

So a bunch of anarchist yutzes from the suburbs decided to protest G8 at that hotbed crossroads of capitalism, 23rd Street and Bartlett, and in the melee, threw a hammer at a cop's head. The cop's in the hospital and three yutzes are in the clink. Our feeling is, what's the point of having all these Sureno and Norteno Mission Street gangs if they're not actually going to protect us from outsider threats? scene.gif But we'll save all that for tomorrow's Blotter. SF Indybay was at the protest, and posted some pictures and coverage of the fight. KRON 4's new aggregator-blog, The Bay Area Is Talking, which was liveblogging it, then put up the Indybay pictures on their site. Bloggers love bloggers, right? More publicity makes for higher hit counts, right? Nope. Indybay sent an angry note to KRON accusing them of copyright infringement and demanding that the pictures be taken down. KRON 4 said they thought the use of the pictures constituted permissible fair use, but agreed to take them down and link to them instead. There's some fascinating ironies here about anarchists invoking the august majesty of federal United States Code section 17, a group called "IndyBay" censoring the content of another independent media provider (yup, KRON's indie), a member of the mainstream media going all Creative Commons, and leftists avoiding publicity for their public demonstration -- but mostly, it seems to have devolved into a fight where people are mixing up copyright and trademark law. Maybe SFist Jackson and the EFF can clear this up for you at their panel discussion next Tuesday, the 19th --"Bloggers -- Know Your Rights." more ›

Plot to Kill President Not by Bay Area Resident

So apparently everyone was shocked -- shocked! -- to hear that someone wanted to kill our dearest President George W. Bush. Of course, SFist's first thought was to call most of our friends to make sure it wasn't them. After all, George Bush probably doesn't come here very often (ever?) for a reason. Heck, if we got close enough, we might even take one for the team. We say 'might' because we don't want the Alien and Sedition Acts thrown in our face. more ›
