The new course is generating a lot of buzz, and those that have ridden it give it good reviews, saying that it's now more of a power course with more technical climbing, and more opportunity for passing and fluidity among the field. "There's nothing too technical, but a couple of very, very sandy descents are sure to create havoc and excitement." Now that's what we're talking about!

Specifically, the 18-mile course runs in a clockwise direction this year, as opposed to the counterclockwise loop of the old route, gains about 2400 feet, and brings into play new pieces of the Fort Ord trail network that racers have never had a chance to shred before. The race starts with a longer run on the Laguna Seca racetrack than in years past to allow riders a chance to spread out a little before they head off onto the dirt. A downhill finish this year should also add some extra finish-line excitement to this signature event.

Rain On, Ride On

OK mountain bikers, it's raining this weekend, and that means most of the trails out there are muck. It's coming this weekend, and you can almost smell the protective plastic bags and acne medication in the air.

San Francisco's comics and science fiction convention is growing to the point where it rivals San Diego's Comic-Con, which means we locals can experience the full majesty of grown men in Jedi, stormtrooper, and Wonder Woman costumes without having to deal with hours of travel or the hassle of finding a hotel room.

The guest list this year includes Frank Miller to talk about and his previous comics work, and J.J.
We know that the real highlights are seeing a guy dressed as Spider-Man talking to a guy dressed as one of the Rohirrim in front of a string quartet playing theme songs from anime series. The Folsom Street Fair may think they've cornered the market on social outcasts finally free to find acceptance and solidarity among their peers, but that's nothing compared to a comic book convention.

San Francisco basketball fans, though, have long needed to seek a June hoops fix someplace besides the NBA, and this week our ship comes in: the SF Bay Area ProCity Summer Basketball League tips off its 26th season at 8 p.m. tonight in Kezar Pavilion at Stanyan and Waller. They'll play most nights between now and the league championships August 8-12 (full schedule here), and everyone in the building should have a great time.

The ProCity is a pro-am league, which means vacationing NBA ballplayers play with and against pros from European leagues, major and minor college players, and more than a few talented high school kids. Over the years, SFist, your own pro-am news source, has had the chance to see two surefire basketball Hall of Famers and one kid we knew in elementary school play in Kezar.

It's not quite like the league's glory days any more. In 1995 and 1996, the Bay Pride team featured Jason Kidd, Gary Payton, Brian Shaw, Shareef Abdur-Rahim and (extra points for recognizing this name) Raymond "Circus" King, who will be on the Bay Pride roster again this summer. The 2005 season is pretty impressive in its own right, nonetheless; league rosters include Warriors Jason Richardson and Baron Davis, former Warrior Gilbert Arenas, Cleveland Cavalier Drew Gooden, and Portland Trail Blazer Darius Miles. They won't play all their team's games, of course, because neither would you if you were a 24-year-old multimillionaire with four months' vacation, but when they do show up they will score lots of points and have lots of fun.

We already mentioned this in our interview with Craig Newmark, but the cool kids (read: blog nerds) will be at the Citizen Journalism meet-and-greet at the Varnish Gallery at six and then yukking it up with the Onion at the 12 Galaxies at ten. If that doesn't interest you, head down to the Winchester Mystery House and a take a flashlight tour! Spooky! For more on the Winchester House, check out Forward Retreat's take.

Tomorrow is Kepler's 50th Anniversary -- go already! Drama queens with some extra cash can catch star of stage and screen Bebe Newirth in "Here Lies Jenny" at the Post Street Theater -- shows at five and nine.

And Sunday is the annual freakfest* known as the Bay to Breakers. Of course there will be the normal people, and then the weirdos who are actually competing to win! And they're not even going to be naked! Or drunk! Takes all kinds.

*Double bonus points for showing up to the Maureen Dowd and Tom Friedman convo in your costume!
Special, "Why does all the good stuff happen when we'll be out of town?" edition.
