Van Ness Reopens After Water Main Break
After a water main broke early Sunday morning near Van Ness, leaving three apartment buildings between Vallejo Street and Pacific Avenue without H2O for the day, three northbound lanes of San Francisco's main artery were closed down. This morning, however, at 8 a.m., Van Ness reopened. With many of the water lines in the area being "nearly 100 years old," an 8-inch pipe snapped due to years of wear and tear. The rupture, CBS 5 / BCN goes on to report, "the rupture caused the pavement on Van Ness Avenue to bulge and crack due to water pressure below the surface of the roadway."
Temporary 17th Street Plaza Estimated for Mid-May
In a week or so, the opening of a public space in the Castro (!) will unfold. The small stretch of street where the F-line stops on 17th Street between Hartford and Castro streets will be blocked off from traffic, creating a small spot for passersby. Andrea Aiello, executive director of the Castro Benefits District (CBD), said, "I think that it will provide a place where people can congregate and have a sandwich or a cup of coffee. It will provide an outdoor destination; it's a great people-watching place. I think it will also encourage more foot traffic to the neighborhood."
Carless Sunday to be Carless Market Street?
Inspired by Gavin's plan to close the Embarcadero to traffic two weekends later this summer, Chris Daly decided to see Gavin's plan and raise him a street or two by proposing that Market Street should be closed to cars from Octavia to the Embarcadero. The only sort of traffic allowed will be buses, taxis, delivery trucks and a few other very important vehicular thingies. The reasons for it include helping MUNI buses move freely, getting more people out of cars and onto pub trans or bikes, helping save the environment, and because it’s kinda a cool idea (see, most every city that is considered world class). Also, as everybody knows, driving down Market Street is kinda impossible anyways so why not?
