Sure, we saw some lightning on Saturday night. But not much. Not much at all. And we were told there would be lots of thunder and lightning during this weekend's limp storm. Instead, said powerful storm headed down south and pounded the Grapevine, resulting in a rather lovely Sunday afternoon here in San Francisco. (We walked around Union Square with iced espresso! The mind boggles.)
Weather: We Were Promised Lots of Thunder, Lightning
Those Buildings on the Cliff in Pacifica Are Slipping, Still
Those not-so-smartly placed apartment buildings atop the cliff in Pacifica are making headlines again as one gusty rain storm like the one we had today could be enough to prompt more erosion, and send the now vacant 320 and 330 Esplanade Ave. right down into the ocean. The two buildings were evacuated in April and December of 2009, respectively, and as late has last June there was still talk of how to finance keeping them in place.
Oh, God: A New Study Predicts the Toll of Massive Winter Storms Could Be Greater Than The Big One
In case you needed another apocalyptic scenario to keep you up nights... Climate scientists are referring to it as "the other Big One," and what they're talking about is a series of torrential storms, caused by "atmospheric rivers" over California, the likes of which the state has seen before: in the winter of 1861-62. That year, storms rained down across the state for 45 straight days, leaving a third of the land under water.
The Sun Might Come Out Tomorrow
Monday will see a brief respite from the relentless rain before another storm front is expected to pass through the Bay Area on Tuesday evening. Tomorrow's forecast is partly cloudy with a high of 58 degrees by Noon and mostly sunny around the 3 and 4 p.m. hours. San Francisco received 0.61 inches of rain today in the 24-hour period ending at 4 p.m.
Rain To Continue Nearly Every Night Until Christmas
Friday's dismal weather prediction has been accurate so far -- we hear there was thunder and hail in the Bay Area today. (We wouldn't know, as we're currently in the cold, cold Midwest. It's 27 degrees as we type.) SF Gate reports that more than an inch of rain pelted the area, resulting in power outages for thousands of residents.
Second Bay Area Storm Fails to Deliver, Critics Claim
Even though more power outages are affecting PG&E customers in the Bay Area due to today's storm (chortle), you would hardly believe it. Where's the vim and vigor of last week's tempest? Where are the knocked down trees? Where are the broken umbrellas? Where are the 10-minute boasting intervals of having a Hi-Def Doppler? Pft. Mama Nature lost us with this one.
