Good grief, this Chinese New Year business sure does go on for a long time. This weekend, it's a New Year Parade and a New Year Community Fair that'll be tying up traffic. A ton of major east-west lines will be affected on Saturday afternoon -- the 5, the 71, the 38, the F, the 1, and so on. Also causing trouble: the weather. Muni can barely keep its head above water when it's dry,......

Jesus, have you seen those ads for this movie "Hancock"? Is it us, or is there something insaaaaaanely racist about them? Let's break it down: Will Smith plays an African-American superhero -- the first big-screen African-American superhero since, um, Robert Townsend in 1993's Meteor Man? Oh, that's right, there was that black sidekick in "The Incredibles." And Halle Berry as Storm. And Wesley Snipes as Blade ... so, okay, there've been four black superheroes in......

Dear AlertSF, Why do you yell at us? You've done this to us five times today already, and we still don't understand you with the greatest clarity. To wit: The National Weather Service reports/updated a Winter Storm Watch for the San Francisco area. ...SNOW ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 AM PST THURSDAY FOR THE TULARE COUNTY MOUNTAINS... ...WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM THURSDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH FRIDAY AFTERNOON FOR THE TULARE COUNTY MOUNTAINS.........

What with last week's and (and presumably this week's) manic storm activity, John Vlahides at 71Miles reports that this week is the week to play hooky. Reporting that the Sierra Crest is "dumping over ten feet of feather-light snow," why not take a day or three off of work to head up to higher altitudes and frolic in the cold? Places like "Squaw Valley," "Kirkwood," and "Heavenly" - terms typically overheard from the mouths......

Oh, the joys of electricity. We in our satellite Sunnyside SFist office had been without it since 8:43 this morning. Power was finally restored at 4:20 (hot!). We immediately plugged in our computer and iPhone and powered up. We couldn't believe all that we missed today! Britney losing her kids, Brazil losing some alligators, Gay tax breaks - wow! It's amazing how "wired" we've become. It makes moments like the one pictured above seem......

Since we're reportedly under the breeziness of "hurricane"-like winds, can we name the storm? If so, can we name it "Mary-Kate," then? Great. In addition to shutting down the Richmond Bridge, closing the ferries, screwing with the chi of (the) 101, and getting our demin damp, Mary-Kate has so far also caused over 518,000 residents in the Bay Area to lose power. (Including the Whole Foods on Fourth Street. Bah.) A PG&E spokesperson said......

Because you can't go home. One of our guilty pleasures during storms is sitting around and looking at live traffic updates to keep track of the mayhem. We snapped this screenshot just now. Accidents and incidents literally every minute? We'd be glad we're taking MUNI except that it's closed at Market at 3rd... Anyway, as far as we can tell, if you live in Marin and work in Contra Costa, or vice versa, you can't......

First off, our heart goes out to all of you who took the Ferry this morning. Do you need dry some toast or Ginger Ale? Because: barf. SFist received word from one poor passenger who took the first boat into SF this morning, just before Golden Gate Transit suspended all service. It seems the ride was "bad, which included euphemistic warnings from the Captain 'hold on it’s gonna be a bit bumpy.' Bumpy in......

You've still got the Berkeley World Music Festival today, and Indiefest's Hole in the Head fantasy/sci-fi/horror film fest is in full swing! Your other options include: --This looks like a can't-miss! ACT is presenting Fields of Gold, a musical about Amish teens in the throes of rumspringa (sampling the modern world). We missed SXSW last week, but some of our friends were down there covering the mayhem and brought back some great photos. You can see local photographer and friend of SFist Julie Schuchard get up close and personal with Iggy Pop and The Stooges in this slideshow and see tons of SXSW photos taken by DJ Ted of BAGeL Radio. Also check out a bunch of coverage from our friends at Austinist. Since all......

When we were kids, we loved to play spy and hide behind trees with a water pistol to shoot one of our friends. Of course, some people would frown on that type of behavior because shooting people is kind of bad and violent and why can't we give peace a chance? So for those wishing to be a spy but do so in a nice way, this Friday will be the new and improved Cruel 2 B Kind game, the benevolent assassination game. It's taking place this Friday at 7:30 in SOMA. It's like those assassin games you hear about, except with good vibes....

SFist had a rock-n-roll weekend that started last Friday night at Varnish for our 2nd birthday party. Not only did DJ Ted of BAGeL Radio rock the house with a few hours of his finest tracks, our friend Nick Tangborn from Jackpine Social Club also brought Mark Eitzel down for a few beers. It was great to meet some readers and the SFist bingo game was a real highlight, especially when one of our partygoers......

We can't believe that after more than a month of half-assed watching of "Rock Star: Supernova" we've only just now figured out that the contestant named Storm Large is none other than the Storm from Storm and Her Dirty Mouth, a San Francisco band. How dumb are we? It had crossed our minds when we first saw her on the show, and heard her name, that it was awfully odd that there was another......

We were going to blame our missed post on Hurricane, Tropical Storm, Summer Shower Albert, but you see how that went, so we have to level with you. We were in Orlando last week on business, holed up in another convention center, this time without a laptop. We were supposed to be sharing one with someone from work, but if you've ever had to do that, or if you've ever had siblings, you know how......

We first heard about Jimmy and Judy at this year's IndieFest benefit party, when Bruce Fletcher, the Fest's director of programming, excitedly announced to us that it was his "new favorite movie." High praise indeed! While we had hoped to see the film on the big screen at its IndieFest premiere on February 4, when we heard that Edward Furlong and Rachael Bella, the stars of the movie (and who are involved in real......

You may have noticed that we're giving away 'Fisties this month. Did you read about our 'Fisties in the music category? We declared that the local boys in Two Gallants made the Best Career Move this year by signing with iesteemed indie label Saddle Creek Records. One of the perks of signing with an indie is artistic freedom, which the band exercised on the b-side of their just-released "Las Cruces Jail"/"Long Summer Day" 7-inch. Enter......

Usually, we try as hard as we can to avoid the real world, but we'll make an exception for the fourth San Francisco Documentary Film Festival. There are so many unbelievable films to check out over the festival, which opens tonight and runs through Sunday May 22. WonderCon was almost too much for we little nerds to handle. Look! It's Robot Monster! And over there! Spider-Man! And there's a storm trooper! And look--another storm trooper! And another! And enough with the storm troopers already, sheesh! The first program we took in was a talk with some some guys who worked on the special effects for the Spielberg-directed War of the Worlds. The host promised the audience that they were a privileged......
