A sad week for LAist as they lose their trusted and amazing editor Tony Pierce to the LA Times, but what a blast his last week was. He shared his 25 Favorite CDs of 2007 and wrote a great review of just a good movie, No Country For Old Men. At UCLA, thousands of students celebrated the end of their quarter by running around campus in their undies (lots of photos in a two-part photo essay, one, two). That wasn't the only photo essay either: Joss Whedon/Mutant Enemy friends and Star Trek actors all joined in at the Writers Strike and KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas brought two nights of amazing bands that included Avenged Sevenfold, Linkin Park (Part I), Modest Mouse, Muse, Spoon and The Killers (Part II). Not only is L.A. a great music town, it has just been named the best city for bookish types. For those who are looking for something a little more active, American Gladiators are back (yes!) and if that's not enough, how about a Christmas gift of action and adventure?

Phillyist is counting down to 2008 (and really enjoying it - yes, in that way!), leaving them exhausted, disoriented, and irritable.

This week's show recommendations: Hurry up and head over to Amoeba at 6pm for a chance to see Okkervil River perform for free and then get a free, limited edition CD sampler when you purchase their new one The Stage Names (while supplies last, of course). Later on this evening you have a serious wealth of options to see good music. Our dear friend Ashod Simonian is on the road with Stereo Total who play tonight at Bimbo's with The Octopus Project. Ashod's toured with many a great band and recently put out a book called Real Fun which features 100+ candid Polaroids of musicians on tour during their downtime, including Spoon, Death Cab, Jenny Lewis, Broken Social Scene and tons more plus a CD with tracks by Irving, Dios Malos and Norfolk & Western. Over at the Warfield, Rilo Kiley perform songs from their new one Under The Blacklight (which we don't think sounds at all like Fleetwood Mac, for the record) with Lewis' man-friend Jonathan Rice and Grand Ole Party. Cafe Du Nord's got the oddly-named pair of Joan As Police Woman plus Michael Zapruder's Rain of Frogs. Bottom of the Hill presents Sacramento's nostalgic Nintendo-music tribute band The Advantage with Them Hills and The Lovely Public. For some local music, you could see Thee More Shallows at Hemlock or Eats Tapes and Lemonade at Rickshaw Stop.

There are no less than three fantastic music festivals all taking place over the weekend of September 14-16. What gives? And how do we choose? Since we live in the bay area, perhaps our decision has been made for us: we're heading to the inaugural Treasure Island Music Festival presented by the fine folks at Noise Pop and Another Planet. The two day festival features 14 bands each day on two stages with mostly hip hop and electronica on Saturday (Theivery Corporation, DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist, M.I.A.) and a great lineup of indie rock on Sunday (Modest Mouse, Built To Spill, Clap Your Hands). And it all takes place on Treasure Island, that scrap of land you've seen a thousand times but likely have never set foot on. Getting there is sure to be an adventure! Check out the full lineup and get your tickets. We've got a pair of tickets for one lucky winner to go to one day of the Treasure Island Music Festival. (We're not sure which date yet but will update this post as soon as we hear back from our contact! But both days are really good so you can't go wrong. So back to our rant: during that same weekend, the three-day Austin City Limits Music Festival is happening in Austin with a lineup that includes Bob Dylan, Bjork, The White Stripes and Arcade Fire. And just this morning we read about the Monolith Festival at Red Rocks Amphitheatre near Denver, Colorado, that also boasts a great lineup including The Flaming Lips, The Decemberists, and some smaller bands we'd love to see like Forget Cassettes. One of our favorite bands of all time, Spoon, has the right idea: they're somehow managing to play all three festivals. Normally we'd be a little worried about the band being jetlagged by the time they headline for us that Sunday night, but these guys are professionals. They'll deliver.

On to this week's show recommendations. Start tonight early by heading to the Burn My Eyes 2 Rock Poster Show at 12 Galaxies featuring twelve rock poster artists exhibiting and selling their work. Later on Popscene presents Junior Senior and Switches at 330 Ritch. On Friday, KPIG presents the legend himself Alejandro Escovedo at Great American with opener Sonny Smith. The Go, bellavista and White Savage are at Bottom of the Hill and over at Slim's you can see Detroit Cobras with Dan Sartain and The Willowz. On Saturday, Birdmonster pack Cafe Du Nord with Eulogies and DJ Ted from BAGeL Radio.

Tonight catch brazen British siren Carina Round at Cafe Du Nord, who will be a hard act for headliner Cary Brothers to follow. On Friday, singer songwriter Rocky Votolato plays songs from his new record The Brag and Cuss [listen to it here] at Bottom of the Hill with Langhorne Slim and Panda. Chow Nasty celebrate the release of their new album Super (Electrical) Recordings at the Independent with two of our favorite local bands the Heavenly States and Magic Bullets. We're guessing you've heard of the super secret Spoon show at Cafe Du Nord on Saturday night with none other than Rogue Wave opening the bill. San Francisco is truly benefitting from the promotional push around Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, released this past Tuesday, with that Popscene show a few weeks back, this not-secret performance at Cafe Du Nord, and their upcoming appearance at the inaugural Treasure Island Music Festival in September. Sure, it could have something to do with San Francisco being situated between Britt's hometown of Portland and the promotional mecca of Los Angeles, but we're just going to tell ourselves that Spoon has a crush on our fair city. Forget all the rumors you've heard about tickets; the band's mailing list says to get to the venue early on the day of the show for a chance at yours. If you're lucky enough to get in, be sure to buy a record off of them because the first 50 buyers get a meet & greet with the band. If you can't get in to see Spoon, Vanilla Ice is performing at Red Devil Lounge. Yeah we couldn't believe it either.

Last Thursday night we squeezed into 330 Ritch to see Spoon, one of our favorite bands of all time. We'd just helped celebrate former SFist Eve's birthday at Tempest Bar and picked up our friend after her fire dancing class at Temple of Poi, and thankfully got to the venue just as Spoon hit the stage. Spoon were the consummate professionals as always, delivering a tight set without much banter or bullshit. We love them for playing a diverse set of songs from across their many releases. The opening riff of "Fitted Shirt" gave us a rush of excitement and nostalgia especially; such a great song about such an unlikely subject. The title of Spoon's new record has us puzzled, and hearing Britt's pronounce it like machine gun fire - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga - was interesting to hear, but, yeah, we still don't get it. Speaking of Spoon, we're headed to their (and our) old hometown of Austin this week for a sunny vacation. The bad news is that we picked a week with no less than four shows that we're crushed to miss: Chris Garneau at the Hemlock tonight, Arcade Fire at the Greek on Friday and Saturday, Laura Veirs at Cafe Du Nord on Tuesday and Client at Amoeba on Wednesday. Tonight there's that must-see show at the Hemlock with Chris Garneau, Liam Carey and Laura Weinbach. As you saw from the video, singer-songwriter Garneau sings torch songs with a reserved passion (think Sufjan Stevens' quiet voice). This is a show we're dying to see, but we're on vacation in Austin, remember! Also tonight, our friends at The Bay Bridged present Social Studies, Tempo No Tempo and The Lovely Public at Rickshaw Stop. Popscene presents a record release party for the locals in Scissors For Lefty and Brakes Brakes Brakes at 330 Ritch. There's a note on the website that tells us Brakes Brakes Brakes was formerly known as The Brakes, and this just makes us laugh. Are there any "The" names that haven't been taken? The Bougainvilleas? The Dodecahedrons?

Our second offering of prizes comes from two great bands playing on Tuesday night at the Independent: Great Northern and Loney, Dear. For a long time we had an irrational aversion to the name "Loney, Dear" because our internal copy editor (who never shuts off) kept recoiling at the misspelling of "lonely". Once we accepted the strange stage name of Swedish singer-songwriter Emil Svanängen, we listened to the record with an open mind and really liked it. The music on Loney, Noir is upbeat, dreamy and moody and Emil has an exuberant falsetto that reminds us a little of Sigur Rós. Opening the show is Great Northern, a band that mixes things up from grandiose and glum to cheery and bright, first the boys singing and then the girls. Two winners will receive Loney, Dear's Loney, Noir album, and one winner gets a Great Northern T-shirt and a copy of their brand new album Trading Twilight For Daylight. We saw several great shows last week. On Thursday night we headed to Hotel Utah to see Birds & Batteries for the first time, and thankfully they lived up to our hopes that they could pull things off live. The digital/analog, organic/synthetic (birds/batteries) themes made total sense as the guitar, bass and drums were enveloped in samples and synths. Saturday night we saw The Knitters once again at Great American where the packed audience danced and hooted all night. We wrapped up the weekend at the Mission Creek Music Festival closing party at Thee Parkside on Sunday afternoon. Things started off slowly, perhaps because the afternoon show competed with the aftermath of Bay to Breakers. We came to see Birds & Batteries again, but stayed to hang out with our friends Dan from the Rickshaw Stop and Will from New & Used Records, and some new friends including the guys behind The Bay Bridged. On to this week's show recommendations! Tonight Popscene presents a special performance by the one and only Spoon at 330 Ritch. The longstanding show series rarely lands such seasoned artists - usually it's up and comers or buzz bands - but Spoon seem to be on a warmup west coast jaunt leading up to the Sasquatch Festival this weekend. And of course any buzz on their forthcoming record, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga out July 10th, can't hurt.
