Ride Muni for Free All Night Long On New Year's Eve

Ride Muni for Free All Night Long On New Year's Eve

Mayor Gavin Newsom says that one of his "top priorities is to ensure that every San Franciscan has a safe and happy New Year. Riding Muni is a smart and green way to ring in the new year." (Thanks, Gavin!) And with a firm flick of his wrist, this New Year's Eve, starting at 8 p.m., Muni will be free all night, which is about what it's worth. The free rides come to a screeching halt at 6 a.m., Tuesday, January 1. more ›

SFist Tonight

Starts at 7:30 p.m. at SomArts Cultural Center; $70.

  • Dub Mission: Renowned for their supreme titular dub sounds, DJs Sep and Vinnie Esparza throw down the proper beats to get properly wasted to, just before tomorrow's big ol' Jesus-loving, egg nog-swilling, glazed ham-consuming day of joy. Special guest star DJ TBA. more ›

  • SFist Tonight

-- The Shining (1980): "Honey, I'm home," "Here's Johnny!" etcetera, etcetera, Kubrick, and so forth. (No one wields a baseball bat like Shelley Duvall. So awkward. Also, what ever happened to her?) Screens at midnight (okay, 11:55 p.m.) at the Clay. more ›

    Week Around the -Ists

    Week Around the -Ists

The Red Sox has permeated nearly every facet of Bostonist's lives. When they're not live-blogging the games, waxing poetic about the games, thanking Curt Schilling for his splendid work, or telling Dane Cook to watch his hair, they're watching certain presidential candidates hop on the Red Sox bandwagon (sorry, Gothamist). The Sox are so branded on the local brain that people are using the Series to spice up their sex lives. Speaking of spice, Bostonist is really sick of that taco promo. And, while they're proud of John Williams, Bostonist is still trying to figure out Williams' "Very Special Arrangement" of the "Star Spangled Banner." more ›

Permit to Engage in Expressive Activity, SFShenanigans!

Checking out Laughing Squid, we came across yucksters SFShenanigans' Christmas-In-August calendar item. (Similar to last month's reverse trick-or-treat, which we hear was spooktacular.) more ›

    Ask a Muni Driver

    Ask a Muni Driver

This week, we're going to do a Very Special Edition of "Ask a Muni Driver" as our driver is going to give us his list of "Things That Annoy the Crap Out of a Driver." He's also asking submissions from SFist readers to list their "Things That Annoy the Crap Out of Muni Drivers." We've probably beaten that into the ground by now, but either post a comment in the comment section or e-mail me at jon@sfist.com and we'll put together a list for next week. Anyways, back to the show. more ›

    Ask a Muni Driver

Okay, so we're a day late on this, but this post is still well worth it. Before we start, we'd like to issue this reminder-- if you got any questions for our driver, drop us a line at editor@sfist.com. We'd also like to say that next week we got a Very Special Ask a Muni Driver and we hear at SFist are pretty darn excited about it. Anyways, here we go, yo... more ›

    Ask a Muni Driver

    Ask a Muni Driver

In the first past of our Very Special Ask a Muni Driver, our driver discussed what driving the lines are like. Today, we discuss two issues that always makes us wonder-- what do drivers do if they need to go the bathroom and just how boring is it to constantly drive the same route everyday for eight hours? more ›

    SFist Blotter

    SFist Blotter

A gay African-American high school English teacher at the private Urban School is recovering from three stab wounds he received a few weeks ago while eating at the Taqueria Cancun down near Mission and 29th Street. A woman came into the taqueria and started yelling racial and anti-gay slurs at people in the restaurant, and when the teacher and his friends tried to get away from her, she attacked him with the knife. The SFPD responded and arrested the woman, who's pled not guilty to the charges. more ›

    SFist Finds: Funions

    SFist Finds: Funions

Send your Bay Area finds to found at sfist.com! We call on you to submit discarded photos, objects, letters, and other items that you plucked from streets, thrift stores, flea markets, et cetera! Tell us where/when you found the item and any other helpful info. The find must be from the Bay Area, and its previous ownership shrouded in mystery. Special thanks to Captian Disco for sending us this link to an auction on eBay of a photo album containing photos from San Quentin circa 1932, including mug shots, suicide photos, and a track and field event. The auction ends tomorrow. Today's two featured lists were each separately found on the sidewalk near Hayes Valley about three or four years ago. The grocery list was at Hayes and Buchanan, and we honestly couldn't tell you the exact location of the "Reason for Blockages" find. more ›

Are They Running Out of Candidates?

Are They Running Out of Candidates?

As far as we know, our mom is NOT behind this movement. But we're totally flattered that blogswarm at Calitics thinks we should run for mayor. We're even more flattered that our CrackBerry Chronicles are "dreaded" by someone other than Gavin Newsom. HIGHlarious! more ›

APE Escape 2007 Part 3: The Storytellers--Traditional, With A Twist

APE Escape 2007 Part 3: The Storytellers--Traditional, With A Twist

The last of our slightly less-than-timely coverage of the Alternative Press Expo, which took place last weekend, focuses on folks telling their sequential art stories in a longer form. Which, as much as we love the other stuff, is really what we dig the most. We focus on Ted Naifeh, Dave Dwonch, Joseph Costirlos, Von Allan, Jaimel M. Hemphill, and Javier Gonzalez. more ›

    Week In -Ists

We here in the Ist-A-Verse know that we're sensational, but it's very rare that we get a chance to be sensationalistic. This week, we've decided to have ourselves a little fun and try our hand at tacky tabloid headlines, using nothing more than our favorite posts from this week. more ›

Fake Question Time III- the Photos

Fake Question Time III- the Photos

To paraphrase an old joke about hockey, we went to a Town Hall meeting last night and a protest broke out. Case in point, the above photo of an attendee making a calm and rational point about the meeting by first shouting at Gavin and then approaching him while Gavin filibustered. We'll let SFist Elaine describe the scene. If you want more eyewitness accounts, Fog City has a recap as well as official Editor in Emeritus, Jackson West. ABC 7 has a video of the scene more ›

SFist Interviews Thom Moran of Bon Savants

SFist Interviews Thom Moran of Bon Savants

We hope to visit Boston soon, and when we do, we hope Bon Savants will be our ambassadors. Read lead singer Thom Moran's hilarious answers to the below questions and listen to their catchy, shoegazy pop, and you'll see what we mean. They are also humanitarians at heart and requested that we link to The Pendulum Project. Bon Savants are stopping in SF tonight to play a sold-out show at Cafe Du Nord with Portland band Menomena, who were featured in SF Weekly this week. Both bands are heading to South By Southwest next week. more ›

    Workin' for the Weekend

    Workin' for the Weekend

Ah yes, the weekend. Finally! It's been a hectic week-- earthquakes, landslides, the whole Kenneth Eng fiasco, those purple latex gloves-- where will it all end? We don't know but we could sure use a drink and a good old fashioned shindig-- too bad that most of the Noise Pop shows have sold out. We've put together a list of runner-ups for the weekend in the city. Sure, its not Ted Leo, Cake or The Donnas, but you can get just as drunk for half the price. Here's a rundown of the haps: more ›
