Speaking of cultural sensitivity in Dolores Park, the SF SPCA will throw a Chihuahua-themed party in Dolores Park this Sunday, May 1, in honor of Cinco de Mayo. See, due Paris Hilton and her horrible kind, chihuahuas are now disproportionally represented in shelters and rescues. Many of the tiny pooches were abandoned by their whore owners after the mid-to-late '00s small-dog fad faded away. This is where you come in: SF SPCA will have a chihuahua meet-up and adoption booth at Sunday's canine fest. And you should seriously consider bringing one home as a new member of your family.

Fake Veterinarian is a Real Canine Mutilator
Down in Salinas, local police and officers from the SPCA searched the home of a local man who is accused of mutilating dogs while posing as a licensed veterinarian. Apparently, unsuspecting dog owners were hiring one Damian Maldonado to come to their houses and perform "ear cropping" and "tail docking" procedures. That might have been bad enough as the procedures are already pretty cruel and unnecessary, but Maldonado didn't even perform them correctly - prompting the unhappy dog owners to call for an investigation.
Adoptable Pets of Week: Tailgate & Storm Trooper
Tailgate (4 m/o) and Storm Trooper (3 m/o) are quite the pair. They met as neighbors while in the Shelter Medicine ward of the Leanne B. Roberts Veterinary Hospital while they were being prepared for adoption. There were furtive little paw swipes through their cages and sniffs through their walls, then friendship. When Storm Trooper’s eye infection necessitated having surgery leaving him sightless, hence his lack of eyes, Tailgate nurtured him and adopted the role of guide-kitty.
Adoptable Pets of Week: Louie & Seal
Check out our adoptable pets of the week, two amazing chihuahuas that need loving homes.
Adoptable Pets of Week: Adopt-A-Cat Month
In lieu of our weekly adoptable pet offerings, we want to tell you that June is 'Adopt-A-Cat Month' at the SF SPCA. Which means: eee! Cats, you see, are rad. And kittens? Oh brother, are they something else. Yeah, they're very special -- even though there are so many of them. You can help heal their loneliness by heading over to the SPCA right now to welcome a little nutball of fur into your home. Kittens under 6 months are $150 each, with the second one thrown in for a mere $50. (Ok, calm down, it's just a donation fee, but still... cat coupons!) Visit SFSPCA.org for more details.
Adoptable Pets of Week: Magpie & Champ
Did you make a connection with one of both of these two lovable rapscallions? Then, by all means, head over to the SPCA to adopt them or one of the many fine animals who need a a little bit of love and caring. Really, they could use a warm and safe place to call home. (Not someone who will treat them as furniture or accessories or... worse. Remember: Pets are family members, period.) This week's adoptable pets are:
Adoptable Pets of Week: Dinah & Regina

2 month old pit bull gals
All puppies are adorable, don't you think? And we sure are stellar examples of cuteness! We'll entertain you with our puppy antics and enthusiasm. An ideal home would be with someone who not only appreciates our charms, but also understands that puppies are just infants and we need a lot of education and time....
SF SPCA Offering Reward for Stolen Puppy's Return
Last night a dog was stolen from the San Francisco SPCA. Cassidy, a puppy infected with giardia (an intestinal infection that can spread to humans, notes ABC 7), was receiving critical medicine and treatment, and the good folks at the SF SPCA are "deeply concerned" about her health.
Free Pet Food at SPCA Today
We're a little late getting this to you, but the SPCA is offering free pet food today. Check it: "Tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb. 3, the Purina ONE Tour for Heroes is making its stop at the San Francisco SPCA. Purina will set up a temporary food bank to give out more than 1,000 bags of pet food to Bay Area pet owners from 2-7 p.m., while supplies last." Location: 250 Alabama Street (at 16th Street), San Francisco.
Adoptable Pets Of The Week: Chica & Ranger Rick
Making a connection with these two lovable sillyfaces? Then, by all means, head down to the SPCA to adopt them or one of the many fine animals who need a gram of your love. Really, they could sure use a warm and safe place to call home. (And not someone who will treat them as furniture or accessories or... worse. Remember: Pets are family members, period.) More info after the jump.
Adoptable Pets Of The Week: Mable & Cat Benatar
Good news! Tito, Twinkle Toes and Sage have all found good hoomes. And the SPCA, we're told, saw a spike in visitors over the last two weeks due in part to "Adoptable Pets Of The Week." That, and because SFist readers are all kinds of awesome. Thanks, guys.
Adoptable Pets Of The Week: Tito and Ms. Beatrice
Each Wednesday afternoon, SFist will feature an adoptable cat and dog from the SPCA. We beg you to give these guys a look. (And how could you not? They're downright adorable, not to mention very lonely.) However, if your landlord won't allow pets, or you have severe allergies, or just don't enjoy animal companionship, feel free to republish this on your preferred social networking medium of choice. Maybe you have a friend who would like a little furry friend? Animals, after all, are rad.
SPCA to Close On Mondays
Sad news. Due to the state's continuing economic woes, the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, for the first time in its 141 year history, will close on Mondays. According to DogBlog, "the SPCA has suffered from reduced contributions and staff layoffs (16 employees were let go earlier this month) and its Maddie’s Adoption Center will no longer be open on Mondays in an effort to eliminate a $3.5 million deficit.
Kitten Overload at SPCA
Eeps! Squee! Ack! Aw! Oh my! The start of summer means the start of kitten season. And right now at the SPCA is at "kitten overload." According to an appropriately all-capped and superfluously exclamation pointed post at sfspcacat.blogspot.com, "We are OVERLOADED with kittens, adult cats and to be quite blunt...WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF ROOM!!!!" As of today, the SPCA has 130 cats available for adoption. But we strongly urge you to take in an adult cat. Why? Well, for starters, you don't have to train or housebreak adult felines. Also, since kittens just barely "out-cute" their elders, older cats wait and wait and wait for a loving, safe place to call home. So, if you have a little space, a lot of love, some commonsense, and understand that felines are not accessories, adopt one of these little fellas, won't you? In turn, you will be greatly rewarded. (Seriously, this adoption page will probably make you teary eyed. You've been warned.)

Help find Miranda, won't you? The M.I.A. pooch was last seen in May of '08 on the 900 block of South Van Ness. Sob, sniff. We're pulling for you, fluff face.
