Obviously, this isn't local (though we did get a small East Bay "jiggle" this morning) but definitely of local interest: it seems, according to KRON 4, a 8.0 earthquake hit "90 miles southeast" of Lima, Peru this afternoon, just off of the coast. Major power outages are reported. But from what we hear, they're deep quakes -- about 20-30 miles or more down. And a tsunami warning/watch is in effect for the coast of South...

Propaganda III: Subverting Uncle Sam
Above poster by Trudy L. Cole If the purple Impeach banner at Sunday's Giant's game got you all giddy with subversive glee, then tomorrow's opening of the Propaganda III World Tour at the Phoenix Hotel is sure to have you hyperventilating. Celebrate our country's {insert George W's voice here} "freedom" {end voice} by perusing hundreds of culture-jamming, political posters from around the globe, the act of which will make old Uncle Sam's hairy, gray...
We Read The Weeklies
guys is pretty funny. Is payola coming back for web radio? And no more crack rap, please. Also, a birthday party for John Adams, and Savage Love forgot about adoption.
Day Around the Bay
We're coming to you live, from Philadelphia as we write this from SFist's Philadelphia bureau.
-Aaron Peskin is doing a heckuva job.
Total Eclipse Of The Sun
Turn around, bright eyes..... -- Eclipse of the heart, eclipse of the moon -- same diff! So at 2:55 a.m. PST tonight, there's going to be a total lunar eclipse. Problem is, the lunar eclipse is only visible in South America and Europe. What's a Bonnie Tyler fan to do?
Well, the Exploratorium's come to the rescue! Local science fans who like to stay up late can check out the Exploratorium's live webcast of the eclipse -- or if you're in the mood for a pajama party, the Exploratorium will be open for partying all night, and broadcasting footage from a telescope they've hooked up in Turkey that'll be recording the whole event (from a Roman amphitheater, no less.) Since the eclipse is traveling over Brazil, the Exploratorium is featuring capoiera dancers, and Turkish dancers will perform too.
Tickets are $15 adults, $10 kids, and $8 members, and will be on sale until either 11:00 p.m. or 2:00 a.m. (it's unclear from the materials we received -- maybe to be safe, reserve in advance at 415-561-0308.) And after the moon comes back, go to the 24-hour IHOP on Lombard to celebrate!
Get Stuffed: El Metate
So last week we delighted in Salvadorian pupusas at Panchitas #2. Good stuff. This week we wanted to stay a little closer to home, both geographically and culinarily, so we went to one of our favorite not-quite-discovered neighborhood joints, El Metate (link to Joanne Weir's list of favorite restaurants, so you know it has to be pretty effing good).
Happy Parrot Day!
February is maybe the dreariest month, what with its being the dying days of winter and there being a dearth of sports on TV, but cheer up, San Franciscans, the Board of Supervisors has come to the rescue! A resolution passed this week proclaims Feb. 9th as "Wild Parrot Day" in honor of those colorful and loudly squawking birds that have made a home out of Telegraph Hill. "The wild parrots' great-hearted lunacy makes us laugh," reads the proclamation, although we like what one Telegraph Hill resident said about the birds: "I think, most profoundly, they're a daily reminder that San Francisco is still an oasis for exotics." This is actually the second "Wild Parrot Day" to occur, as there was a previous one in 1999 that SFist fondly remembers as a day when everyone dressed up in bright, beautiful colors and bar hopped tiki bars.
